COMMUNITY NEWS

Community OutreachThe following is a submission from Andrea Homes of the Yorktown Shelter for Women. Andreareached out to request the opportunity to thank the St. George’s community for their ongoingsupport for the shelter and the services they offer.

FEBRUARY 7, 2014 | 5

Located in North West Toronto is Yorktown Shelter for Women, a havenfor women and children who have left behind lives fraught with vio-

lence and abuse to begin the challenging journey of transitioning into newlives. Only 10 minutes from the Shelters doors is St. George's Golf andCountry Club, home not only to an outstanding golf course but also to anoasis of philanthropy – the caring members that give back to the localcommunity.

In May of 2013, Yorktown Shelter for Women (YSW) had the good for-tune of finding itself on the radar of the generous members of St. George'sGolf and Country Club. It is my pleasure and my privilege to deliver a mes-sage of heartfelt 'thanks' on behalf of YSW's clients; social and communityworkers and staff; Board of Directors and volunteers. We can not thankyou enough for your thoughtfulness and kindness.

Since May of last year, Yorktown Shelter for Women has been the ben-eficiary of several philanthropic initiatives that members of St. George'sGolf and Country Club have undertaken.

Many of you may have been involved in some, or all, of the followinginitiatives (listed in chronological order): • Ladies' Captain's Choice Golf Tournament Fundraiser; proceeds have

helped mothers and their children move from the Yorktown Shelter forwomen into their new homes. In particular, funds were used to pur-chase new beds for the families. To date, 10 families have been settledinto their new homes.

• St. George's Golf and Country Club donated furniture (bookcase, diningchairs, side tables) and dishes that were used to furnish the homes forthe 10 YSW families.

• Winter coat drive; St. George's curling members collected 165 wintercoats that were donated to several agencies, 25 were donated to York-town Shelter for Women.

• Warm clothing drive; St. George's curling members collected hats, mitts, and scarves which were distributed at the Yorktown Shelter forWomen. The warm clothing could not have come at a better time, when, beginning just before the holidays, our city endured severalweeks of sustained substantially sub-zero temperatures

• Undergarment clothing drive; a friendly competition was initiated bySt. George's curling members who challenged the curling members ofthe Weston Golf and Country Club in an undergarment clothing drive.A large quantity of lovely items were collected. An event at the Shelterhas been planned for mid-February where the garments will be dis-tributed to the clients.

• Lady Curlers X-mas Luncheon Raffle; ever thoughtful and generous, the ladies took the opportunity to raise some funds for Yorktown Shelterfor Women.

• Members of St. George's have gone on to connect Yorktown Shelterfor Women and it's sister agency, Yorktown Child and Family Centre,to other local organizations helping to build Yorktown's network of phi-lanthropists. We are truly grateful to everyone at St. George's Golf and Country Club

who contributed to the success of the above initiatives. Please know thatyour investment in the clients of Yorktown Shelter for Women and York-town Child and Family Centre is very much appreciate. Your altruism ishelping us to bring positive change to lives of many deserving children, youth, women and families in north west Toronto.

We would like to offer a very special 'thank you' to Paul and JudyHuyer, Tracy Martin, Debbie Hawkey, Keith and Angela Bartlett, BarbMosakos, Graeme McCarrel, and MaryKay MacPherson for being instru-mental in the success of the above initiatives.

Yorktown has been bringing programs and services to at-risk and mar-ginalized communities in north west Toronto for over 20 years. If you wouldlike more information on the work that we do or would like to see for your-self how you have contributed back to the local community, please feelfree to contact me at [email protected]. I would bevery happy to answer your questions and set up a tour of our facilities.
