THE ROLE We are seeking to appoint an Interim Catering Manager to lead the Catering Team on a fixed term basis for 6 months, to provide cover during prolonged sickness absence. This position is 36 hours per week, all year round and attracts 30 days’ holiday per year (pro rata for six months). Start date is 1st September 2020, or earlier by agreement. The Catering Department consists of the Hospitality & Catering Manager, Chef Manager, Assistant Cook, ten Catering Assistants, a Midday Supervisor and two Kitchen Porters. The ethos of the team is that whilst each team member works independently on tasks they must also work together to support each other as a team. The Catering Department work in a busy environment and consequently requires a team member to be proactive and flexible with a hands-on approach. Please note that the GDST recruitment policy means that contracts are subject to a probationary period.

Role Interim Catering Manager

Job Purpose To help deliver the School’s aims and objectives by ensuring the provision of an efficient and effective catering service, with attractive, healthy, varied meals for students, staff and visitors.

Accountable to: Catering Manager

Responsible for: Catering Staff Accountabilities

1. Policy/strategic direction a. Assist the Catering Manager in devising and implementing

appropriate policies and strategies to maximise usage of the catering service, and to ensure that it contributes to the school’s aims and objectives.

2. Management of resources a) Day to day management of the catering service including the

planning and costing of menus, and organising the preparation, cooking and service of meals and refreshments, ensuring that variety and excellent quality are consistently provided.

b) Implement cost-effective stock control and purchasing

procedures to maintain correct storage and stock levels.

c) Assist the Catering Manager with the preparation and monitoring of the catering budget to ensure that agreed expenditure and income targets are met.

d) Ensure that all plant and equipment for which responsible is operational and maintained in a safe working condition through a specified programme of regular inspection and planned maintenance.

3. Leadership and management

a) Take personal pride in ensuring that the appearance and

smooth running of the catering service contribute to a

positive image of the school, and encourage and direct others as appropriate to do so.

b) In liaison with Catering Manager, recruit, induct, develop, deploy, motivate and appraise staff for which responsible to ensure that they have clear expectations of their roles, and that high performance standards are achieved and maintained.

c) Organise duty rotas and daily routines to ensure that the catering service is provided consistently, and in accordance with agreed specifications.

4. Health and Safety

a) Ensure that risk assessments are in place for all relevant

hazards and working procedures, and ensure that all staff for which responsible are familiar with safe working practices and understand the importance of complying with them.

b) Ensure that all food is stored, handled, prepared, processed, cooked and served in accordance with the highest standards of food hygiene at all times.

c) Ensure that menus provide for healthy eating, meet recommended nutritional requirements, and make provision for special dietary requirements as relevant.

d) Establish a comprehensive cleaning programme to ensure that all catering areas and ancillary rooms, and all equipment and machinery are maintained in a clean, hygienic and safe condition throughout and at the end of each working day, with regular deep cleaning as required.

5. Communications and marketing a) Build effective relationships and provide a courteous,

friendly service to all stakeholders both internal and

b) Promote the catering service within the school and initiate and implement new ideas to maintain a thriving catering service and increase usage.

c) Ensure that variety and presentation of food is attractive to customers.

d) Support school functions as required, and ensure that the

quality, presentation and service of refreshments presents a positive image of the school.

6. Monitoring

a) Implement systems to monitor usage of the catering service and customer satisfaction to inform future planning.

b) Monitor suppliers to ensure consistent quality and cost-effectiveness of products

7. Training and development of self and others

a) Regularly review own practice, set personal development targets and take responsibility for own continuing professional development.

b) Ensure that training needs within the catering service are identified, appropriately met, and that all members of staff are active in updating their skills and knowledge.
