TE MATAU A MAUI STANDING ARTWORK (The fish hook of Maui)

In ancient folklore, the exploits of Maui (half God / half man) stand unrivaled. On one such adventure, Maui stowed away in the waka (canoe) when his four older brothers departed on a fishing expedition. When they were far from land, Maui revealed himself and convinced his brothers to paddle further out to the deepest sea where fish would be in abundance. With his enchanted fish hook which he had fashioned from the jawbone of his great grandmother, with paua (abalone) shell eyes to see in the depths of the sea and a tuft of dog hair to keep the hook warm in the freezing depths and to retain the scent of the bait (blood from his nose), Maui cast his fishing line.

As soon as the hook descended to the ocean floor, it was devoured by a giant fish. The ocean foamed and boiled as Maui struggled with all his strength to land the fish. Finally, the fish yielded and floated to the surface.

Te ika-a-Maui (the fish of Maui) more commonly known as the North Island of New Zealand had arisen in the south Pacific Ocean. Te Waka a Maui (the canoe of Maui) is known as the South Island and Stewart Island is Te Punga a Maui (Maui’s anchor).

The fish hook is the Maori symbol for provision and prosperity.

TE MANAIA STANDING ARTWORK (The Guardian Spirit)

The guardian spirit (a supernatural being) plays an important role in the Maori world. To the Maori, every person on earth has a Guardian Spirit which can be described as an unseen light surrounding each individual.

During life, the guardian is a protector from evil and untimely accident.

Te Manaia are usually depicted in side profile symbolizing their role as messengers (i.e. part in the spit world and part in the earthly world).

They normally have the head of a bird (sky), the body of a man (earth) and the tail of a fish (sea) symbolic of the spiritual balance they have between the realms.

The three fingers and toes have varied tribal meanings. To some, they represent birth, life and death, to others, they represent the three baskets of knowledge and yet to others, faith, hope and love. Sometimes, Te Manaia is depicted with a fourth finger symbolizing the afterlife.

The Manaia is an Iwi Spiritual Guardian, Provider and Protector over the air, waters and land.

HEI-TIKI STANDING ARTWORK (Hei – to wear around the neck, Tiki – first man)

The origins of “Tiki” are uncertain but throughout Maoridom he is acknowledged as the first man and that he came from the stars. He is sometimes depicted as an amphibious person with large fishlike eyes, webbed feet, and considered the teacher of all things.

In some accounts of ancient Maori folklore “Tiki” was the first man created by Tane (God of Forests and Men). “Tiki” formed woman from the earth after admiring his own reflection in the water.

”Hei Tiki” were regarded as precious treasures (taonga) and were predominantly carved from greenstone (pounamu). It is thought that the diverse forms of “Tiki” were the result of the carver being constrained by the shape and stone as it was extremely hard and difficult to shape with primitive grinding tools. “Hei Tiki” had spiritual significance from generation to generation and it was believed that they acquired the importance and power (mana) of each of the passed ancestors (tipuna) to have worn it.

This artwork is a contemporary representation of the Hei-Tiki, crafted from plantation grown hardwood and embellished with paua shell. It personifies the primeval man, The tilted head symbolizes clear thinking, the hands (strength), mouth (communication), the heat (love), and the loins (fertility). The wearer is assumed to be of strong character, clear thinking, perceptive, loyal and knowledgeable.

WHEKU STANDING ARTWORK (Carved Face)

It is important to note that the figures in Maori carving, with rare exceptions, are not religious, but secular. They do not represent idols, but renowned ancestors (tipuna) of the tribe.

The Wheku as found at the apex of the gable on the front of a large carved house, symbolizes an important ancestor whom the house was named. The house itself represents his body. The sloping bargeboards being his arms (maihi), the rafters (heke) being his ribs and the inside being his stomach or bosom (poho). The head is usually represented on its own with no part of the body visible. In old houses, it is actually carved on the projecting end of ridgepole (tahuhu), and the body of the figure will be seen on the ridgepole.

There are many tribal variations in how the head is represented. The three main styles of the head in Maori carving are: Wheku, the Koruru and the Ruru, each distinguished by the shape around the eyes.

KORU SCULPTURES

In Maori design, the Koru has a dual meaning. It is commonly used in Maori art as a symbol of creation. It is also said to represent new life and in business, new beginnings and the strengthening of existing relationships.

Literally speaking, the baby fern frond slowly unwinds over its adolescent life as it grows into a mature frond. It then opens into a brand-new leaf on the silver fern plant where it ages and then dies. This is the fern fronds life cycle.

You will notice the Koru is carved “clockwise”. Traditionally known as “sunwise circling”, it represents good luck. This is because to move sunwise is to be in harmony with the earths movement around the sun.

HEI MATAU SCULPTURES

“Whakairo” – carving, art or craft, carefully carved from native New Zealand Rimu, gifted to human kind by Tane Mahuta God of the forests and inlaid with Paua shell, created by Tangaroa God of the Sea.

Hei Matau (fish hook). A skilful fisherman became a very important person in the tribe and his success was attributed to his hook whose ‘mana’ or presence pleased the spirits. Such a hook was given a personal name and was greatly treasured. Legend tells that the demi God Maui used a hook made from his grandfather’s jaw bone to fish the North Island of New Zealand from the depths of the sea.
