Myers assword bearer, brought with him ahistoric sword, of . which he gave ashort sketch, on introducing it to Aloha Lodge. This sword was presentedas a testimonial to Capt. John A.Hassenger in 18G4 by the retiringstaff of the "Honolulu Rifles," thestaff consisting of Majors Domims,Spalding and McKibbin, Kamehame- -

ha IV, being honorary colonel of theRifles" at the time of his death.

Mr. Hasienger turned his swordover to Mystic Lodge safe keeping,and this was the sword brought over,by a delegation from Mystic Lodgein 1889, and used to dub as knights,the charter 'members of Aloha Lodge.In March of this year, Capt. Hassen-ger presented the sword to MysticLodge, tt is a very elegantly finish-ed and handsome weapon.

When the hour for the dedicationexercises arrived, a large number ofinvited guests from all parts of Mauiwere assembled. After some prelim-inary secret work, the doors of AlohaLodge were thrown open, and theimpressive ceremonies of the dedication were witnessed by as manyguests as the hall would contain. Theball' itself is one of the handsomest outhe Islands, and was brilliantly light-ed. The solemn rites of dedication, thecharming effect of so many hand-sbthl- y

dressed and attractive ladyvisitors, and the soft strains of theband outside united to mark a goldenhour in the memory of all present.

When the ceremonies were con-

duced, social converse was indulgedin for a short time, and then thehall was cleared for dancing. Themusic furnished by the governmentbaud was delightlul, and till a latehour in the morning, the floor wascrowded with dancer's who "chasedthe golden hours with flying feet."At midnight, an elaborate banquetwas spread down stairs, with enoughfor all the invited guests.

The whole affair, from its concep-

tion to its finish was wisely arrangedand happily carried out, and too muchpraise caunot be awarded to AlohaLodge for tho rare entertainmentafforded to the people of Maui.

MissCooledgc who has charge of themusical department of the Seminaryhad trained the girls and their furound tones and harmonysnowed how successful she had been.Tne feature of the evening wastin1 operetta, "Violet in Fairyiaud"in which Violet is lust in Fairyiaudand is restored by a dainty band of(lancing siiiiiiiiif fairies. Tin: costumeswere very pretty, made by the girlsthemselves un ler the very efficientsupervision of Miss Linsay. Thequeen was dressed in while with acrown and star on her lioad and thouiind that followed her were in pinkand blue. Tire effect was lovely a- -

gaiust a background of evergreenbranches. The "Angeis Message"was beautifully rendered by MissCooledgc and showed how well fittedshe is for her position. The girlsresponded to encores with theirsweet nutive songs and all went awayfeeling amply repaid for their longdrives over not very good roads.

Berger's Baud arrived on scheduletime at Kahului, and the balmy airof Maui has ever since been vibratingwith the melodious echoes of horns,trombones, stringed instruments anddrums. The program, as publishedlast week was carried out with somevariations made for tho convenienceof our country cousins, and the bandhave done their duty like heroes.

On Wednesday morning, the bandwere invited to breakfast with JudgeKalua, and since then there has beenbut little rest for them. On Thurs-day afternoon they were entertainedat a luau given in their honor byCompany I of the National Guards.Under the supervision of the formerCaptain J. N. K. Keola, an elegantluau was prepared at the CourtHouse, at which there were a largenumber of guests, beside the bandboys. The event was a marked so-

cial euccess, and Captain Berger,with his mouth full of chicken and hislips quivering with heartfelt emotion,responded in an eloquent speech to atoast in his honor, in which he ex-

pressed his surprise and delight atthe warm welcome which he and hisband received on Maui.

This morning the band left by stagefor Lahaina, where they will play to-

day, and the hospital people of Laha-ina say that they will keep them tillMonday, if possible.
