According to Forbes, building the best employee experience is the next competitive frontier for companies. Employee experience is the sum of everything an employee perceives, lives and engages with during their journey within an organization. Driving factors include the increasingly competitive war for talent, the popularity of company review websites like Glassdoor and LinkedIn, and the shift in employees’ expectations from stability to rapid career development. According to recent research, top companies focusing on employee experience tend to have four times the average profit and more than twice the average revenue.

Building a solid employee experience is a company-wide endeavor involving multiple departments. As digital innovation is fundamentally changing the workplace, IT teams have a critical role to play in building one of the most important aspects: seamless digital employee experience.

Understand the needs of “Generation Me” employees

Generation Me employees (otherwise known as the Millennials) demand the same quality of experience as customers. According to a recent Management Today survey, employers are ignoring this at their peril.

At a time when companies are concerned with attracting and retaining talent and good workers, it’s important for both HR and IT to to see employees as internal customers. Working together and sharing information, they should strive to resolve issues quickly, provide new tools and technology that empower employees and more frequently engage with them to find out how they can improve their experiences.

Companies who fail to understand the individual digital needs of their employees are squandering opportunities to have a more engaged, energized and productive workforce.

Companies should focus on offering greater flexible working and career development to their employees in order to enhance their experience. While technology is an integral part of millennial life, employers appear slow at understanding and implementing automation, analytics and other technologies that can facilitate improvements.

Position IT initiatives as an employee experience accelerator

Current IT processes are problematic in many businesses. According to TechRepublic, slow response times and broken processes make IT a contributing factor for why employees get frustrated and ultimately quit their jobs. A new report states that IT is the most broken corporate process in American enterprises, leading to the rise of shadow IT and employee dissatisfaction.

But there is a way to overcome this challenge: redesign processes to put the employee at the center and embrace technology. Achieving fully connected and operationally mobile employees, as well as moving to cloud-based systems should be at the top of the IT team’s priorities. Such measures could help companies improve employee experience.

Leverage data to produce a better employee experience

There is the need for technology to foster connections between employees as one would do with customers. Using data to identify patterns of behaviors and create customized employee experiences is also key. As companies move towards hyper-contextualization of the employee experience, the most forward-looking organizations will be able to understand the behaviors and patterns of employees. But it doesn’t stop there. Knowing is just the beginning; continuous improvement is the objective. Turning this understanding into actionable data to make improvement actions and decisions (via automation processes) is key.

Combine subject matter expertise with data

Do not assume your artificial intelligence (AI) and automation tools will be successful on their own. While enabling employees to save time and make more informed decisions, these technologies can only provide value, if combined with the right processes.

To create a better AI solution, you need to leverage the domain expertise of IT employees with the data that a system collects, believes Steven Gustafson, Chief Scientist at Maana. The key to a successful artificial intelligence system lies in the ability to translate business goals into a language that it will understand. This means defining the right measurement capabilities based on what winning/success or losing/failure looks like, so that the system knows how to correctly score the data.

Combining the users’ experience-based feedback with domain knowledge allows the AI system to improve over time.
