TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Occasionally, someone raises a surprised complaint that while Christmas arrives on Santa’s sleigh at the Macy’s parade on Thanksgiving Day, the Church doesn’t catch on too fast. They may even say that Advent is a new‑fangled idea. Not so. To trace its beginnings, we have to go back to the fourth or fifth century in France (then Gaul), when Epiphany was the favored day, next to Easter, for baptism. The old pagan structures of Rome were collaps-ing then, and many people sought to be baptized. Since adults always prepared for baptism by fasting, folks counted back a few weeks for a kind of retreat. Before too long, bishops were advising everyone to attend church frequently be-ginning on December 17. Soon, artists were imagining ways of expressing the Advent mystery, and in Italy this gave rise to beautiful mosaics of empty thrones awaiting the arrival of the Lord of all creation. Advent as we know it develops on two separate tracks: the first having to do with our spiritual preparation for celebrating the Christmas feast, and the second having to do with the way this is organized and expressed in the liturgi-cal readings and prayers every day of the season. —James Field, Copyright © J. THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE We are in fairly good company when we ask God for justice. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God’s justice is something other than this, of course. God’s justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah’s time. Israel’s kings held the promise of God’s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God’s promise could be realized through them. Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke’s Gospel echoes that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. Restorative Justice The Christmas season is a most stressful time for someone who is
incarcerated. A poem written by an inmate in part reads:

I look out my window to be greeted with stares, I yell for help but no one cares.
Here at St. Francis of Assisi we would like to work in cooperation with the Office of Restorative Justice at our Diocese to help coordinate the distribution of thousands of Christmas cards that are given each year to prisons in our Diocese. We are in need of boxes of new, unsigned Christmas cards (especially Spanish-language cards) which are then given to inmates to send home to their families. During this time, we ask for your help in showing our incarnated sisters and brothers that some people do care.
Deadline is Friday, December 7, 2018 in order to meet the prisons’ deadlines.
Please no cards that: are scented; contain glitter, tassels, ribbons, plastic, or pieces that can be removed; no musical cards. Please no cards requesting/requiring donations to an organization. If you are able to help, please drop off your Christmas Cards to the parish office thank you.
FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE
This feast, which is celebrated on December 12, honors the mother of Jesus and of the Americas. Mary appeared to Juan Diego, an Indian convert to Christianity in Mexico on Decem-ber 9, 1531. He went to Mexico City and presented himself to the Bishop as Mary had asked him to do. The Bishop was skep-tical, but believed in the vision after Juan Diego returned to him a third time, his tilma filled with roses from Tepeyac. When the roses fell to the ground, they revealed the image of Mary on the tilma, now enshrined in Mexico City. Everyone is invited to come and share in a special celebration honoring our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, on Tuesday, December 11. A procession from Bluett Hall to the Church will begin at 11:30 p.m., followed by a mañanitas (serenade) in the church before the Bilingual Mass begins at 12:00 a.m. A reception will take place in the Parish Hall after Mass.

All women ae invited to the Magnificat Prayer Meal on Saturday, December 8, 2018. 9:30 am-12:30 pm at the Indian Wells Country Club located at 46000 Club Dr . Indian Wells.
Guest speaker will be Maria Vadia, founder of the “Jesus is Lord” chapter of Magnificat in Miami. Maria was born I Havana and came to the USA with her family at the age of 10. She is active in the Catholic Renewal of the Archdiocese of Miami, and has spoken at many conferences, in US and all over the world. Maria is part of Glory House of Miami, a safe haven for human trafficking victims. As founder of Glory to God Foundation, Maria is committed to making Jesus known to another nation by helping Pygmies in Kabale, Uganda build new houses, preaching the Gospel and the power of the Holy Spirit. Together with Fr. Tom di Lorenzo, she sponsors the School of the Holy Spirit and Days of Glory confer-ences. Come and see how the Holy Spirit can get you involved in His work.

LA PROMESA DE JUSTICIA Estamos en buena compañía cuando clamamos a Dios por justicia. Con frecuencia escuchamos y estamos de acuerdo con el pueblo de Israel que pregunta a Dios por qué el malo prospera. Sin embargo, cuando clamamos por justicia usualmente queremos que al-guien reciba el castigo que se merece. Obviamente la justicia de Dios es más que eso. La justicia de Dios abarca una maravillosa rectitud entre Dios y la humanidad. En la lectura de hoy Jeremías avizora un tiempo en el que un justo brotará del tron-co de Jesé, de la casa y la familia de David. La vida no era justa en el tiempo de Jeremías. Los reyes de Israel mantenían viva la promesa de la fidelidad de Dios, pero era difícil ver cómo la promesa de Dios se podía cumplir por medio de ellos. No obstante, Jeremías levanta la voz y anuncia que ya viene el Salvador prometido. El Evangelio de Lucas hace eco de ese anuncio, y Pablo se llena de un gran ánimo. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Es más que justo empezar el tiempo litúrgico de Adviento con la Virgen María. Esta semana celebramos la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción de María. Esta es una fiesta especial para varios países latinoamericanos como Nicaragua, Panamá, Paraguay y los Estados Unidos que tienen como patrona nacional a la Madre de Jesús bajo este título. Esta creencia tiene siglos de ser discutida por teólogos cristianos como Ambrosio, Agustín, Buenaventura y Tomás de Aquino, pero fue solo con la Constitución Ineffabilis Deus del Papa Pío IX en 1854 que pasó a ser doctrina oficial de la Iglesia. La enseñanza de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Madre de Jesús insiste que María nació y permaneció sin pecado. Según el teólogo franciscano Juan Duns Escoto, María fue salvada del pecado desde el vientre de su madre Ana. De esta manera Jesús pudo salvarla no después de haber pecado como ha hecho con nosotros, sino antes de que ella hubiera pecado. Sự dấn thân truyền giáo của Người thật quảng đại, mặc dù phải chịu những hy sinh rất lớn và thiếu thốn, mang lại thành quả dồi dào, không những qua việc đón nhận nhiều người Việt Nam vào Giáo Hội, nhưng còn thành lập Đan Viện Đức Mẹ Việt Nam ngày 15 tháng 8 năm 1918, đây là Đan viện đầu tiên của chi dòng Xitô Thánh Gia.

Hàng năm cứ vào thời điểm này, chúng ta lại bắt đầu nghĩ đến các ngày nghỉ lễ và những cách chúng ta có thể chia sẻ sự may mắn của chúng ta với những người chung quanh.
Với sự hỗ trợ của các giáo dân trong giáo xứ, "Chương Trình Trao Quà Tặng" đã và đang giúp những tín hữu kém may mắn trong giáo xứ của chúng ta có đủ điều kiện để hưởng một kỳ nghỉ lễ đầy ý nghĩa. Trợ giúp thẻ quà tặng sẽ giúp những người nghèo có cơ hội lựa chọn quà tặng theo ý của họ nhân dịp Giáng Sinh sắp đến. Bắt đầu từ tuần này, giáo xứ sẽ nhận quyên góp để cùng 'trao quà tặng' .
Giáo xứ gợi ý chúng ta mua mỗi thẻ quà tặng với giá trị $10. Ví dụ: nếu quý vị muốn ủng hộ $40 thì xin quý vị mua 4 thẻ quà tặng $10. Những nơi đề nghị mua thẻ quà tặng như: Target, Kohl, Walmart.
