TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Melchizedek brought out bread and wine and blessed Abram (Genesis 14:18-20). Psalm — You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek (Psalm 110). Second Reading — Paul gives his description of the institution of the Eucharist (1 Corinthians 11:23-26). Gospel — Jesus spoke to the crowd about the kingdom of God and then fed them with five loaves and two fish (Luke 9:11b-17). THIS SACRED MEAL

Today we celebrate the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Each of the readings includes a blessing and a sharing of food. They remind us of the central place of meals in our lives. Each meal brings to mind other meals: the sharing of cookies and milk, pizza and beer, loaves and fishes, bread and wine. When we prepare a meal for our family, our friends, even strangers, we always put something of ourselves into the preparation and the meal itself. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ re-minds us of what God put into the preparation for this meal that we celebrate today. We share this sacred meal and are trans-formed as we remember the death of Jesus and the sacrifice that nurtures our faith, sustains our lives, and supports our work. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

We owe today’s beautiful feast to a valiant woman who suffered a great deal to establish a feast out of her love for the Eucharist. Juliana was a nun in Belgium in the thirteenth century. She served in a hospital for lepers. She became con-vinced through her prayer that the liturgical year was incomplete because it had no feast for the Eucharist. Her efforts were not welcome, and a supervising priest sought to punish her for promoting a feast that “nobody wanted.” He even had her accused of financial mismanagement and banished her from her convent. Shortly after she was exiled, the bishop approved the feast. It quickly spread through Europe. In those days, peo-ple very seldom received Holy Communion, and so the processions through the streets with the eucharistic bread not only led to an awareness of Christ’s hunger to be with us, but prepared the way for a deeper desire to receive Christ’s Body and Blood in more frequent Communion. The feast grew rapidly, but Juliana disappeared into poverty and a hid-den life. She ended her days as an “anchoress,” a woman living in seclusion in a room attached to a parish church. Imag-ine her delight at seeing us gathered at the table of the Lord on this day, aware of Christ’s presence in our midst, sharing fully in Christ’s Body and Blood. Greetings from the Capital Campaign Committee The Holy Spirit continues to guide our campaign, with each week bringing us more parishioners who are supporting this exciting building project. As you have read over the past several weeks from the other ministries involved in this project we are moving ahead with permits and architectural drawings and the project is taking shape. In no time construction will start. While we have had good success in raising enough cash to start the building process, we are still short of our goal. ESTE SAGRADO ALIMENTO Hoy celebramos el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Cada una de las lecturas incluyen una bendición y un compartir de alimentos. Lo cual nos recuerda de lo importante que son las comidas en nuestras vidas. Cada comida trae el recuerdo de otras comidas: el compartir galletas y leche, pizza y cerveza, panecillos y pescados, pan y vino. Cuando preparamos una comida para nuestra familia, nuestros amigos, aun para personas desconocidas, siempre ponemos algo de nosotros en la prepara-ción y en la comida misma. El Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo nos recuerda lo que Dios puso en la preparación para este alimento que celebramos hoy. Compartimos este sagrado alimento y somos transformados al tiempo que recordamos la muerte de Jesús y el sacrificio que nutre nuestra fe, sustenta nuestra vida y apoya nuestro trabajo. Copyright © J. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Perú tiene más de 3000 fiestas cada año, normalmente en torno al santo patrón de algún pueblo. La celebración de Corpus Christi es celebrada en todo el país. Pero es más llamativa en Cusco. Durante el día se escucha el repique de María Angola, la campana más grande de todo Perú, que existe desde el siglo XVI. La celebración incluye una procesión con quince santos y vírgenes del siglo XVII, que vienen desde sus santuarios hasta la barroca Catedral de Cusco para honrar el Cuerpo de Jesús. Estas imágenes son cargadas por la plaza de armas antes de llegar a la catedral donde se quedarán hasta el octavo día. Según los peruanos los santos y vírgenes pasan las siete noches platicando con el Señor de los temblores, bromeando y planificando el año que viene para sus parroquias. El último día los santos y vírgenes regresan a sus santuarios con otra procesión. Estas dos procesiones nos recuerdan que por mucho que los latinoamericanos ame-mos y veneremos a los santos y vírgenes reconocemos que tanto ellos como nosotros están al servicio de Cristo Jesús. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
