Lisabellas Bistro & Bar Celebrating Coastal Cuisine 361-749-4222 Open Monday - Saturday at 5:00 pm Casual Dining at it’s Finest Nightly Seafood Specials By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Local legend, Roy Cox passes… Long time island resident, Roy Cox, passed away at the age of 65 on Tuesday night. He had been in poor health for quite some time. Cox was inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame and was the co-founder and bassist in the 60’s psychedelic band, Bubble Puppy (1966-1972), who had the international top 20 hit in 1969, Hot Smoke and Sassafras. Most of the original members of Bubble Puppy are from Corpus and Mathis. Roy is originally from San Antonio but resided in Port Aransas for many years. Rod Prince, guitarist/vocalist and founder of Bubble Puppy had this to say of Roy’s passing, “ I’ve known Roy since we were 17, and there aren’t many people that could match his enthusiasm for music. He was the driving force behind the Puppy, my writing partner for almost fifty years. At the top of his game he was one the top three bassplayers on the planet and a gifted writer as well as performer. Another matchless addition to that band beyond the world. Fair winds, my brother!” A memorial is being planned and I’ll let you know when and where in my next column. An Easter to remember… My old pal Ruben V (San Antonio, TX) blew into the Porch in high style last Saturday. I wasn’t able to stick around long enough to hear much of Ruben’s most excellent show, since I had to be up early on Easter morning to help with the sunrise service at Robert’s Point Park when the Sandy Bottom String Band (Port Aransas, TX) made their debut. The ten piece ensemble performed six gospel numbers, including Power in the Blood and I’ll Fly Away, to a standing room only crowd at the pavilion. I must say, this was the best Easter I’ve ever had. Much thanks to Father James Derkits at the Trinity by the Sea Episcopal Church for coming up with this concept (bright shiny-faced, young church talent combined with old veteran, crusty barroom musicians). It was really special! The music absolutely soared. Port A has a new music store… You probably won’t understand my enthusiasm here, unless you happen to be a musician who lives in Port Aransas, but for the first time (maybe ever) we have a music store on the island (sort of). Joe and Tiffany (Tuesday) Duckworth have put an assortment of musical instruments and accessories into their Duckworth’s Antique Store next to the Captain’s Quarters Motel on Cotter Avenue. They are selling an line of guitars, mandolins, ukuleles and papooses as well as guitar strings, picks, capos, harmonicas, straps, cords, tuners and a bunch of different percussion instruments (drums, marimbas, shakers, tambourines, etc.). And, they plan to keep expanding their line of musical products in the store. This is big news! Musicians can now by strings and stuff right here on the island without having to drive into Corpus. They also have all kinds of neat furniture and beachy Hemingway kitsch for your house. These are really good people and their store is very cool. Check it out! DO NOT MISS LIST This weekend… April is shaping up to be a great month for music… there is a ton of stuff going on. Here’s my recommendations: For starters, the big funky horn band, Mingo Fishtrap (Austin, TX) will play Susan Powell’s retirement party at the Back Porch tonight, Thursday the 4 th from 7-10. This is shaping up to be the blow-out of the century. On Friday the 5 th , Joe Mack and Carter Sampson (Tahlequah, OK) will play the Porch. Mack is brilliant musician who can create an entire soundtrack alone. He records himself in loops and layers his songs in real time. It’s amazing. Also, on the 5 th , note Carol Elliott is back from Atlanta and will be playing the next two Fridays (5-7) at the Ice House. On Saturday the 6 th , Mike Milligan & the Altar Boys (Austin, TX) will bring their jumping harmonica blues to the Porch. Mike is an island fave and plays the venue several times each season. Also on the 6 th , Jered “Wolfjaw” Clark will play the Upper Deck and a new act called Metalachi will play the Brewster Street Ice House. Metalchi is another theme band in the vein of The Spazmatics and Metal Shop that covers heavy metal standards played by a mariachi band… sounds interesting and may be good for a few laughs. On Sunday the 7 th , the Tarpon Ice House will host a going away party for Dennis & Marilynn Sullivan at the weekly open jam hosted by Uel Jackson. Dennis has been in town for the last year and a half supervising the construction of the new ferry office in Port A. He also has one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard and has been kind enough to share his talents with us many times at the Ice House and Shorty’s. We’ve grown quite fond of these guys and will miss them greatly. God speed my friends. We love you dearly! Next weekend… On Thursday the 11 th , Corpus native Michael O’Connor (Brenham, TX) will play the House of Rock. O’Connor is known as one of the most sought after sidemen in the guitar arena but is also an excellent solo performer. On Friday the 12 th , the southern country Americana act, Charlie Hagar & the Captain Legendary Band (Baton Rogue, LA) will return to the Back Porch in support of their latest CD, Smokin’ Barrell and Samantha Aiken will play the Coast Club. Country crooner, Thomas Michael Riley will host his 6 th annual music festival in Luckenbach this weekend with an all star lineup that includes Hal Ketchum, Larry Joe Taylor, Deryl Dodd, Max Stalling, BLACKtop Gypsy, The Tejas Brothers and The Tejas Brothers among others. On Saturday the 13 th local cow chick Melissa Brooke will play the South Texas Ice House in Corpus, Stevie Start will play the Coast Club and Three Way Street will play Shorty’s Place. On the horizon… On Friday the 19 th , alt rock meets country roots duo, Moon Light Social (Austin, TX) plays the Back Porch and Nick Gaitan & the Umbrella Men (Houston, TX) will bring their swamp pop, Tex-Mex and country to the Executive Surf Club. On Saturday the 20 th , the international all female bluegrass phenomena, Della Mae (Boston, MA), which features two-time National Fiddle Champion Kimber Ludike, will play the Porch. I am really looking forward to this show. Also on the 20 th , the Port A Airport will host an open house with music all day featuring Hy Eddleman and other local faves. On Thursday the 25 th , the amazing Gypsy Kings will play Concrete Street. On Friday the 26 th , the Krayolas (San Antonio, TX) will play the Back Porch. Imagine that the Beatles are Hispanic and from San Antonio, and you have the Krayolas. Check out their website, they are super cool. The big news on this weekend is SandFest: on Friday its Hy Eddleman, Raeanne and the Ride and The Ones, on Saturday its Cord Carpenter, Flatbroke, Rich Lockhart and Melissa Brooke and on Sunday its a gospel band, Palipha Starry Band and a Christian band, The Real Life Band, then Melissa Brooke again. Also on Saturday the 27 th , Houston Marchman will play the Porch, Vallejo (Austin, TX) will play the Surf Club and J.T. Coldfire will play Giggity’s. And that’s the truth!
