I did, except for the ticket DPS wrote me (and dozens of others) for not wearing a seat belt in downtown Port A where the speed limit is 30 mph …I somehow blame Rick Perry. I’ll spare you the rant. It’s been another great two weeks of music on our little island in the Gulf. The surprise of the week goes to Joe Mack (Tahlequah, OK). My buddy Pete Desopo set this show up at the Tarpon Ice House to bring his friend down from Oklahoma. We all figured “Okie hick playing boring Red Dirt cookie cutter country.” WRONG! Turns out Joe Mack is a genius and an incredible musician who’s vocabulary doesn’t include “Red Dirt.” My jaw hit the floor and stayed there the whole time Mr. Mack was on stage. He is a one man whirling dervish and a guitar virtuoso. OK Petie, bring him back! Brother Bo Porter graced us with his presence last weekend at the Back Porch. Bo was on fire and his band was smoking! Of course he had Huck Johnson (Wayne Hancock, Derailers) on stand-up bass. But this time he also had Gary Delz (Gary P. Nunn) on drums and Chris Reeves (Johnny Bush, Jason Allen) on most excellent lead guitar. These guys had a real chemistry going and Bo was hilarious all night. I just love it when I’m in the right place at the right time. Also last weekend, our buddies HOBO (Corpus Christi, TX) and Transistordale (San Antonio, TX) played the Funky Pirate Country Festival at the Gaff. Local hip chick, Rae Drady, is on a roll with her promotions over there. Keep it up! Make it a point to catch the free Tropical Punch show at Roberts Point Park tomorrow (Friday, April 13). It’s the first outdoor show in the Sunset Sounds series set up by Port A Parks and Rec. The band is fronted by Perry Wing (Rockport, TX) and is backed by the Aqua Vox guys: Woodie Ray Lawson (bass), L. Leon Sands (lead guitar) and Andrew Blankenship (drums). They do a few of Wing’s and Lawson’s originals and a hodge- podge of covers (Petty, Beatles, Elvis, J.J. Cale, etc.) Also, Jimmy LaFave (Austin, TX) appears this Saturday (April 14) at the Third Coast Theater, as is the great Randy McAllister (Paris, TX) at the Back Porch (both previewed in the last 3C&T). I’m trying to figure out how to be at two places at the same time, because both of these shows WILL BE KILLER. Local blues diva, Raeanne Reed, also has a show on the 14 th at Coffee Waves. Lately, she’s been working with guitar ace, Dan McLeod and local jamster, Rockin’ Ricke Burnett, and it’s sounding pretty darn good. I hope the Coffee Waves guys are ready for a real show. And, the coup de gras next weekend is of course, the 16 th Annual Texas SandFest 2012 with a dozen local and regional artists performing over the three day master sand sculpting competition. I want to mention a free show at Brewster Street Ice House on Saturday, April 28 th with The Texas Blues Runners and Omar and the Howlers (Austin, TX) sponsored by Classic Rock 104.5 FM. Also on the bill will be the John Cortez Band and Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang. This is good stuff. And finally, I have an update on Ray T’s situation since his motorcycle accident which put him in the hospital with serious injuries a month or so ago, “I’m doing great, I’m walking around, my ribs feel almost like new, the splint is still on my foot but I’m waking on it... A few more follow up appointments and I’ll be done....I hope.” Ray’s only problem right now is that City Crew’s drummer, Reeve Allen left the band to move to Austin and bassist, Chris Jordan, is moving to the Virgin Islands to open a restaurant. That means that Ray is once again looking for a drummer and bass player. Geeze, where have I heard that before? But right now, time’s a wasting. Let’s roll… DO NOT MISS LIST Jesse Dayton Jesse Dayton (Austin, TX) will play the Back Porch on Friday, April 20 th . This is white trash honky-tonkin’ at it’s best. I swear Jesse Dayton is the bastard son of George Jones. Originally from Beaumont, TX, this rockin’ country artist is also a film maker and actor… in zombie movies. He’s worked extensively with Rob Zombie and played music with Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. His latest movie, Zombex staring Malcolm McDowell and Cory Feldman, is scheduled for release this year. Dayton holds court at Austin’s oldest honky- tonk, The Broken Spoke, once a week and has for years. I wouldn’t miss this show for love or money and you shouldn’t either. He’s the real deal. Ponty Bone Ponty Bone and the Squeezetones (Austin, TX) will play the Tarpon Ice House on Saturday, April 21 st as part of Swamp Romp. This event is the brainchild of Port A residents, French Smith and Tanya Fain, who turned this annual Austin event into a very successful festival. They have now brought the tradition to Port A and plan to make it bigger and better every year. This year will feature a gumbo cook-off and a crawfish boil. Sounds like the perfect end to a big day at SandFest. Ponty Bone is a real life Texas Accordion King. Originally from San Antonio, Bone moved to Lubbock to attend Texas Tech in the early 70’s and joined the Joe Ely Band, where magic was made. Over the course of five albums with Ely, countless tours here and abroad, consistent critical acclaim and collaborations with the likes of The Clash and Linda Ronstadt, the Joe Ely Band forged a new brand of Texas country music with Bone’s accordion as one of the signature instruments. In 1986, Bone stepped out front and founded the Squeezetones with guitarist, R.C. Banks. Jim Beal, Jr, music writer for the San Antonio Express-News says of Bone, “...the San Antonio-bred accordion icon, the man who helped return the instrument to pop- music respectability through his work with Joe Ely ...fuses blues, zydeco, Cajun and conjunto for a sound that shows the power and the playfulness of roots music and the subtle talents of the band.” Joe Ely Joe Ely (Austin, TX) will play a solo performance at the House of Rock on Sunday, April 29 th . Michael O’Connor (Brenham, TX) will open the show. I was still in high school the first time I saw Joe Ely play (Lubbock, circa 1970.) I remember sitting around Don Caldwell’s studio in Lubbock during his very early recordings and thinking, “This guy is going far.” Man, was that an understatement. And, in the last 40 years or so, I’ve gone to every Ely show any time he was playing within a 50 mile radius of anywhere I happened to be. That’s still the case. I’ve watched young Earl grow up, and I grew up to his music. I’ve got stories…some are pretty wild. Here’s a hint: if you ever find yourself in a pool game with Ely and he pulls out an onion to use as the 8-ball… don’t bet any money . Joe once told me that he was like the wind. “You know. Some people are of the water and some people are of the fire. I come from the wind.” In Lubbock, there is a vast nothingness and the wind never stops blowing. That’s significant. Back in the late 60’s and early 70’s there was a unique vibe going on and the people my age all huddled together and made music. There wasn’t much else…only each other and the music. Along with Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Lewis Cowdrey, Angela Strehli, Ponty Bone, Jessie Taylor, Terry Allen, Tommy Hancock- the list goes on and on- Ely helped to pioneer a sound that only Lubbock could claim (by way of Buddy Holly). I watched it spawn and then migrate to Austin. The Vietnam war was raging and the rednecks in Lubbock didn’t care for our kind too much. Austin accepted us. Ely led the charge. Thirty-two recordings and four decades later, young Earl now claims to be “Satisfied At Last”, the title of his latest album. He’s had one full life from working in the Barnum and Bailey traveling circus to sharing stages with Bruce Springsteen and The Clash. He is an artist, an actor, a writer and a father. To be honest, I’m still not buying that he’s satisfied at last. He’s been searching too long. I hope it’s true. You’d be a fool to miss this show if you’re within 50 miles. Trust me on this.
