How I spent my weekend…It was another eventful week here on our little
sandbar. I started the weekend at the Tarpon Ice House for Carol Elliott’s happy hour gig. Elliott’s vast inventory of music is always fun. She jumped in the way-back machine and treated us to some stuff she hadn’t done in a while. Her version of the Shake Russell song,
You’ve Got a Lover, particularly blew me away. So did her original a capella song, Sergeant York. I’m always amazed at that gal’s voice… what range. And she had a couple of guests to sit in: Father James Derkits from our Trinity By the Sea Episcopal Church graced us with an original composition that came to him while visiting Big Bend State Park, and his priest friend from Austin, Justin Stewart held the audience spellbound. After Elliott’s show,
we ran over to Patsy Jones Amphitheater at Robert’s Point Park to catch the last set of The One’s as they kicked off Port A Parks and Rec Department’s Sunset Sounds Concert Series. I love this event. It’s family friendly, “bring your own lawn chair and ice chest,” right by the ferry landing. Total Port A charm. These shows occur once a month through the summer and I’ll keep you posted. Later Friday night I caught a set from Southern country-rockers, Charlie Hagar and the Captain Legendary Band (Baton Rogue, LA) who were at the Back Porch. These guys are loaded with mostly original material and when requested to play a cover, only came up with a Waylon Jennings number. You gotta love that! These guys are gritty and bow to no one.
And then…Saturday started early with Three Way Street
playing the big 67th Anniversary celebration of Shorty’s Place. They started the party in the afternoon which worked well with the benefit for our pal, James Hayes, over at Bernie’s. James has been battling cancer and the community came together with some much needed financial help. Stay strong brother! On Saturday night I went by the Porch just in time to catch an amazing rendition of the song, Seven Bridges Road, by the big ten piece party band Cruise
Control (Corpus Christi). I’ve always thought these guys had some amazing harmonies but I was completely blown away listening to these voices work together on that song. They’ll be back at the Porch over Memorial Day Weekend.
And after that…On Sunday, I again started
early. Uel Jackson has been playing the Back Porch on Sunday’s from 3-6. I started off there and then moved to Shorty’s for the Roy Cox memorial. Some of Roy’s old musician friends had come in from out of town and treated us to some great music… as did some of the locals who knew and played with Roy for years. Mike Williams played a few with Roy Hodges on violin and Kit Gutherz on tuba. Sky Malone came down from Padre to lend his talents. Tony Sceracene, Jason Maddox & Carrie Denniston made the trek from Swinney Switch and really made the day. Sceracene (electric lead guitar) and Maddox (acoustic guitar and original vocals) are extra talented. I was totally impressed. Later the memorial spilled over to the open jam at the Ice House. It was historic. Everyone got into the act and it sounded like we’d all played together for years. Uel Jackson did a great job of keeping the music rolling. For me, the highlight of the evening was when Dennis Sullivan played his spot-on cover of the Neil Young song, Harvest Moon. I’d never noticed it before but there was a background swishing sound during the course of the song. Dennis’ wife Marilyn Sullivan put a mic on the
house broom and played along like a champ. I don’t know how, but the Sunday jams at the Ice House keep getting better every week. We are indeed surrounded by a world of talent.
DO NOT MISS LISTFinishing out April…
I’ll run down the last two weeks of April for you. The duo, Moon Light Social (Austin, TX) will play the Back Porch on Friday, April 19. They are produced by Asleep at the Wheel frontman, Ray Benson, and have been turning a lot of heads. On Saturday, April 20th, the all female bluegrass outfit from Boston, Della Mae, will play the Porch. I have been looking forward to this show for weeks. Their fiddle player is a two-time National Fiddle Champion and this band literally plays all over the world having recently returned from a 42 day trip of Central Asia (Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan) as
part of a State Department exchange. Also on the 20th, Lela Caldwell’s one woman electronic music and laser show will light up Shorty’s and the Port A Airport will host an open house with Hy Eddleman and others. On Thursday, April 25th, the internationally acclaimed Gypsy Kings will play Concrete Street. I saw them once in San Antonio and can tell you this is one not to miss. The two principal members of this band are brothers who were the offspring of Spanish gypsy families that fled to France to escape Spain’s Civil War. They grew up roaming the south of France, working harvests and making music. On Friday, April 26th, SandFest 2013 begins its three day weekend on the beach in Port A. Expect 100,000 people to invade our little island for this world-class sand sculpting competition. The music tent will host such
local acts as The Ones, Raeanne & the Ride, Cord Carpenter, Flatbroke, Rich Lockhart & The Palipha Starry Band. Expect the mother of all traffic jams. Also on the 26th, the Parrothead friendly Sand Band will play the Tarpon Ice House; blues maestro J.T. Coldfire (Austin,
TX) will play Giggity’s; local roadhouse heroes, Ray T & the City Crew, will play the Flat’s; and red hot and rockin’ Brit pop meets Westside San Antonio, The Krayolas, will play the Back Porch. My vote here goes to the Krayolas… I love their spiffy outfits. On Saturday, April 27th, Americana veteran¸ Houston Marchman plays the Porch; blues and classic rockers, the Rich Lockhart Band plays Giggity’s; scalding Latin funk rockers, Vallejo (Austin, TX) plays the Executive Surf Club; and local troubadour, Jered Wolfjaw Clark plays the Upper Deck.
A quick glance at May…Highlights for May (more details as the weeks
progress): Larry Joe Taylor, Thomas Michael Riley, Will Owen Gage, Ryan Bingham, Austin Heat, Samantha Aiken, W.C. Clark, Antone & the All Stars, Get Off the Lawn, Lost Fabulocos, The Tarpon Music Bash, Jesse Dayton, Rubin Limas, The Songwriter Showcase, The Dynamics Reunion, Gary P. Nunn, Todd Dorn, Hold Fast Fables, Buster Jiggs, Mandy Rowden, Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Mike Milligan & the Altar Boys, Freddy Steady Krc and Cam King. That ought to get your attention.
