A 16 Island Moon December 13, 2012 By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Guy Clark tribute CD nominated for Grammy… I recently received a press release from Casey Monahan at the Texas Music Office of the Governor’s Office. In case you didn’t know, Casey has kept a close tally of all things musical in Texas since the early 90’s and maintains one whopper of a data base that includes everything from artists and bands to agents, journalists, publications, educators, venues, music stores, sound and lighting companies, music lawyers, festivals, and on and on. It’s really quite impressive not to mention helpful (http://EnjoyTexasMusic. com). In this press release, Casey announced the 27 Texas born or Texas based acts who received a total of 36 Grammy nominations this year. There were the predictable Kelly Clarkson (Burleson, TX), Beyonce (Houston, TX), Miranda Lambert (Lindale, TX), T-Bone Burnett (Ft. Worth, TX) and Don Williams (Floydada, TX) type nominees for mainstream categories and a couple that were a little closer to home; Ruthie Foster (Gause, TX) and Eli Young (Tomball, TX), for best blues and country categories. But what caught my eye and what I am most proud of as a Texan, was the Guy Clark (Monahans, TX) tribute CD (This One’s For Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark) for “Best Folk Album”. The various artists that contributed to this magnificent recording are artists who I consider to be Texas royalty: Rodney Crowell (That Old Time Feeling), Lyle Lovett (Anyhow I Love You), Shawn Colvin (All He Wants Is You), Willie Nelson (Deperadoes Waiting on a Train), Rosie Flores (Baby Took a Limo to Memphis), Ray Wylie Hubbard (Homegrown Tomatoes), John T. Van Zandt II (Let Him Roll), James McMurtry (Cold Dog Soup), Gary Nicholson (Texas Cookin’), Hayes Carll (Worry Be Gone), Joe Ely (Dublin Blues), Steve Earle (The Last Gunfighter Ballad), Terri Hendrix (The Dark), Radney Foster (L.A. Freeway), Patty Griffin (The Cape), Kris Kristofferson (Hemingway’s Whiskey), Jack Ingram (Stuff That Works), Robert Earl Keen, Jr (Texas 1947), Terry Allen (Old Friends), The Trishas (She Ain’t Going Nowhere) and Jerry Jeff Walker (My Favorite Picture of You). The other non-Texans on this two disc recording are Rosanne Cash (Better Days), Kevin Welch (Magdalene), Suzie Bogguss (Instant Coffee Blues), Ramblin’ Jack Elliott (The Guitar), Emmy Lou Harris and John Prine (Magnolia Wind), Verlon Thompson (All Through Throwing Good Love After Bad) and Vince Gill (Randall Knife). The other nominees in this category are Ry Cooder, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Luther Dickinson and Yo- Yo Ma. I’ve got to think that this recording is a shoe in. I can’t imagine it not winning. It already won the award for “Album of the Year” at the Americana Honors and Awards in Nashville this September. What a phenomenal array of talent! It should go in the Library of Congress. Slaid Cleaves… Slaid Cleaves (Austin, TX) played his annual Christmas show at the Third Coast Theater in Port A last Saturday night, as he does every December. I’ve seen Slaid perform perhaps a dozen times in a variety of settings in Austin and San Antonio through the years and think his shows at the Third Coast are among his best. Two years ago he showed up with guitarist, Michael O’Connor and last year he came with Chojo Jacque on violin and mandolin. This year he was accompanied by Scrappy Jud Newcomb on guitar. All I can say is, that’s the trifecta of great sidemen. All of them are stand-outs and master musicians, but Newcomb’s stink on Slaid’s songs really, really sounded great on this evening. His passages and fills were perfect… never over crowding but always strong enough. And, Slaid’s velvet and mellow to a fault vocals in this near perfect sounding room made for a completely dreamy evening. Cleaves has a ton of material with a dozen recordings released since 1990 and treated us to all of our favorites (Wishbone, Horseshoe Lounge, Broke Down, One Good Year, Breakfast in Hell, Lydia, Flowered Dress, etc) plus a few new ones that will soon be released on his forthcoming album, now in production. The guy deals mainly in masterfully crafted sad songs but did pull a few snappy ones out of the hat for us including some Don Walser yodeling tunes that he ventured to sing without a net. He’s a brave man ‘cuz that ain’t no easy task! And, it wouldn’t be a “Slaid Cleaves Christmas Show” without the epic, You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch, that torts the unforgettable verse, “You’re a foul one, Mr. Grinch! You’re a nasty, wasty skunk! Your heart is full of unwashed socks. Your soul is full of gunk, Mr. Grinch! The three words that best describe you are as follows, and I quote, Stink, stank, stunk!” Now that’s Christmas cheer you can sink your teeth into. We left this show feeling euphoric and high with glee… yes I really did say “high with glee”. It was a great evening. Winter is here and so are the PA Rockers… Well, it’s becoming more and more evident that winter is upon us. One of the barometers in Port A is the arrival of the Port A Rockers, a cover band made up of mostly Winter Texans. The Rockers are a fun loving bunch of guys that love to play the classic rock (etc.) tunes they grew up to. They are pals with our local Free Beer Band and frequently sit in at the regular Thursday night gigs at the Tarpon Ice House. One of the last Rocker stragglers, Bob Reed from Colorado, finally made it back to the island and was in attendance last week… so was his PA Rocker drummer and founder, Mark Munson. Their presence was a welcome sight as we’ve all become friends in the past couple of winters and stay in touch through the summer. Also, it appears that Free Beer guitarist and vocalist, Steve Goldstein, will be joining the Rockers this season on lead guitar. You can catch them at their weekly Bernie’s gig starting on January 2 nd . I also heard a rumor about the Rocker’s women forming an all girl band… more will be revealed. DO NOT MISS LIST This Weekend… Tonight, Thurday the 13 th , Los Lonely Boys (Austin, TX) will play Brewster Street Ice House. The phenomenal Alejandro Escovedo (Austin, TX) will open the show. That’s huge… DO NOT MISS IT! I promise this to be a great show… trust me. On Friday the 14 th , Buster Jiggs (Corpus Christi, TX) will bring their high energy rockin’ country to the House of Rock. Neil Edwards (Corpus Christi, TX) opens that show. On Saturday the 15 th , Americana singer- songwriter, Brian Keane (Austin, TX) of Band of Heathens will play the Executive Surf Club. On Sunday the 16 th , the Tarpon Ice House will try their hand at a stand-up comedy show featuring Kelvin Girdy, among others. Partial proceeds will go to benefit the local charity, Operation Decoration. The comedy show starts at 7:00 PM followed by the weekly open jam. Next week, I’ll fill you in on shows with Robert Earl Keen, Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines, Vallejo, Ruben V, Max Stalling, Stevie Start plus all the New Year’s Eve parties. Be safe out there.
