I recently saw Terri and Lloyd over Christmas when they opened for Robert Earl Keen at Brewster Street. The difference between these two shows was like night and day. The Brewster show had well over a thousand people there who were primarily young and drunk REK fans and, for the most part, didn’t have a clue who Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines were. Towards the end of the show at Brewster, a fight broke out right next to us and pretty much killed any good holiday vibes we might have had going. It got ugly fast… but it was quite the opposite case at Third Coast. The place was also sold out but that only means about a hundred or so people and the majority of them were over 40 and complete fans of Terri and Lloyd. This venue in Port A is one of the warmest and acoustically sound listening rooms I’ve ever been in for folk music and singer-songwriters. And, I know that these two artists really love playing it and feel at home there. Yo Cody, what of? At one point in the show, Lloyd decided to pay tribute to one of their friends, Port A’s favorite son Cody Angel, who is away studying music at South Plains College in Levelland. (It was Lloyd who suggested this school to him.) Cody’s parents, Randy and Mary Angel were sitting in the front row and volunteered their cell phone to send a spur of the moment shout-out to young Cody. Lloyd had the whole audience waving and yelling, “Hi Cody, we miss you!” It was definitely an “old home” moment and was very endearing. The point is, this show felt like two of your best friends were in your living room playing for only you and your friends. And, not only was it warm and fuzzy, the music rocked, too. It just doesn’t get any better than Terri and Lloyd making music. A good cause… Terri also talked about a project she has been working on for the past seven years. She recently obtained non-profit status for a community art center in Hays County which will benefit people with neurological disorders. Terri suffers from epilepsy and this is a cause dear to her heart. This is a woman who truly does own her own universe. Keith Sykes & Chuck Pyle at the Lighthouse… I got a text from Lighthouse Rick Reichenbach on Monday around sundown that read, “Can you get to my boat dock in ten minutes?” I had noticed Larry Joe Taylor, Keith Sykes and Chuck Pyle present at Terri and Lloyd’s show on Saturday night and had a pretty good idea what Rick might have in mind… so I dropped what I was doing an went to meet him. Sure enough, when I got over to Rick’s dock, Keith Sykes and Chuck Pyle were there with guitars in hand. Now Lighthouse Rick is famous for his front porch concerts at the Lighthouse with the likes of Ray Wylie Hubbard, Richard Leigh, The Trishas, Cody Canada, Larry Joe Taylor, Davin James, Michael Hearne, etc., etc and I know lots of these guys like to write songs out there. My first thought was, “this could be cool… count me in.” Some quick background… Just to give you some quick background on these two guys, Chuck Pyle is an internationally known singer-songwriter from Colorado who is probably best know for writing the Jerry Jeff Walker hit, Jaded Lover. His songs have been recorded by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Suzie Bogus, John Denver and Chris LeDoux. He has a remarkably nimble finger picking style and goes by the well deserved moniker, Zen Cowboy. Keith Sykes is also a well known singer-songwriter from Memphis who might best be remembered for writing the volcano song for Jimmy Buffett. He also played guitar in Buffett’s band for a while and has had more than 100 songs recorded by such diverse artists as Roseanne Cash and George Thorogood. He’s been on Saturday Night Live and Austin City Limits. As it turns out, Chuck Pyle was in town to meet Larry Joe Taylor for a song writing session, but Taylor had to leave unexpectedly, and not much got accomplished. And, Keith Sykes has been in town for a couple of weeks now, hanging out with Third Coast Theater owner, Jim Urban. He has a show at the Theater on 16 th and just digs being in Port A. During the course of the day Sykes and Pyle had gotten together and written a song… something about a man who realized what a butt head he’s been to his woman and decides to come clean and apologize for doing her wrong. Sounds like a hit! What a delightful evening! After dinner at the lighthouse, they broke out their guitars and treated us to a few songs. Pyle played us an amazing rendition of the Scott Joplin instrumental The Entertainer. A little later, Lighthouse Rick asked Keith to play Monkey River Town and we all sang along. These are two down to earth nice guys that are living the dream. It was honor to meet them and it was a pleasure to spend a little time with both of them. And I can’t think of a more perfect place than the Lydia Ann Lighthouse to make new friends. The music, the food, the stories and the fellowship was righteous. Thanks Rick! DO NOT MISS LIST There is a lot going on lately. Hold on tight… here we go. Tomorrow, the 8 th local songbird, Carol Elliott (Port Aransas, TX) will play the Tarpon Ice House from 5-7. She doesn’t perform very often and, trust me, you don’t want to miss this. In the words of former Poet Laureate, Howard Nemerov, “If I could sing like (Carol Elliott), I wouldn’t bother with poetry.” Then after Elliott’s performance, the Tin Pan Trio (San Antonio, TX) will bring their acoustic blues, old-line swing and guitar- powered instrumentals to the Ice House stage. These guys are the scaled down version of the Miss Neesie and the Ear Food Orchestra (San Antonio, TX) eight piece rockin’ roots and zydeco band who just happens to be playing the all holds barred, Barefoot Mardi Gras celebration, the next night (the 9 th ) on Padre Island (see ad in this issue for details.) I previewed both of these shows thoroughly in my last column. Also on the 9 th , Roberta Morales (San Antonio, TX) formerly of the Sisters Morales, will be playing a fund-raiser for the Port Aransas Animal Shelter at the Civics Center. Tickets are $30 and there will be a cash bar. Plus on the 9 th , blues belter, Shelley King (Austin, TX), will be at Doctor Rockits and Grammy winner, Richard Leigh (Nashville, TN) will play a song swap with Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX) at the Third Coast Theater. Leigh is best known for writing the Crystal Gale hit, Don’t It Make Your Brown Eyes Blue. Then next week on the 12 th , Port Aransas will host its 17 th annual Mardi Gras Parade. That’s HUGE! It will be unbridled mayhem at all the bars, but look for the wildest action at the Flat’s, The Gaff and especially the Tarpon Ice House, where Mike Williams’ Dixie Land Jazz Band featuring Rocky Arnold will be performing. Also next week on Valentine’s Day, Carolyn Wonderland (Austin, TX) will play the Rialto Theater in Aransas Pass and Reckless Kelly plus the Rankin Twins will be at Brewster Street. Then on the 16 th , The Gaff will host their 3 rd annual Bluegrass Festival with the Jon Hogan Band and Get Off the Lawn, Sharkey’s will have a Mardi Gras party and, like I mentioned earlier, Keith Sykes will play Third Coast.
