I’ll run it down for you, blow by blow… let’s roll! Chupacabras attend benefit… On Friday, June 15 th , the Tarpon Ice House held a benefit for Port A resident, Carlton Lamm, who was in the final stages of a rare liver cancer. They had a silent auction and raffle. Mr. Mo played the big stage in the courtyard with guitarist Dan McLeod and drummer Craig Ware. Tiffany Duckworth and Ule Jackson played an acoustic show on the front porch earlier in the day. Also, The Chupacabra’s motorcycle club came down from Austin to give their support. Lamm’s battle with cancer came on very quickly and the efforts of the community and the Ice House came none to soon for his wife, Christine. Carlton passed on Monday, after being diagnosed only three weeks earlier. Port A is bustin’ at the seams… Also on Friday, our buddy Davin James played the Back Porch. Port A was unusually packed this weekend. There were two big fishing tournaments in town (Powder Puff and Texas Game Wardens). Plus, the Game Warden’s tournament featured a big concert with Pat Green headlining (more on that in a minute). The Porch was so busy I decided to head to the Flats early and catch Ray T and the City Crew and find a place to hide. But, there was no escaping the masses, the Flat’s was as busy as I’ve seen it all year. Port A was busting at the seams with tourists so I decided to cut my losses and call it a rare, early night. It can happen occasionally. Pat Green draws 3000 people to park… On Saturday I had a choice to make… either stay in Port A and cover the big Pat Green show at Roberts Point Park or brave the ferry line and go into Corpus to see Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines at the House of Rock. Our photographer Miles Merwin volunteered to go into town since he lives on Padre Island anyway and wouldn’t have to deal with the ferry. Plus, I was more than a little curious about how they were going to set this concert up for Pat Green. They were only charging $12 to get into the show and it also featured Bri Bagwell, Cody Johnson and The Turnpike Troubadours on the bill. Green has reached the point in his career where he can headline an outdoor concert and count on a big draw. This had “BIG SHOW” written all over it and I wanted to see how they were going to do it. I’ve often envisioned a big concert or music festival at Roberts Point because it is such a perfect location with the beauty of the marina and channel sandwiched between a large, grassy area which could accommodate thousands of people and multiple stages (if done right). It seems like a natural to me and I’ve only seen it exploited on a smaller scale in the four years I’ve been here (Sunset Sounds, Deep Sea Round-up, Chili Cook-off, Songwriters Showcase, etc). A job well done… So, I grabbed up my boss, Rockin’ Dale Rankin and his lovely wife, Jan and went to have a “look see”. When we walked in, it was wangin’ and twangin’. The Turnpike Troubadours from Oklahoma had just started playing and there were probably 2000 people there, milling around. By the time Pat Green came on, I’d say it was closer to 3000. They had the stage set up on the east side of the park by the road opposite the marina (smart for load-ins and production set-ups). The sound, lighting and staging were clearly of professional quality. It looked and sounded like the real deal. Honestly, I’ve never heard any show sound very good out there, whether on the Patsy Jones stage, in the pavilion or on a flat bed trailer. But this show was done professionally and it showed. Plus, they had put a cyclone fence around the entire grassy area and could therefore sell beer (not to mention get a cover charge) because it was contained. The local police were on hand and did an excellent job of making the parking nightmare a non-issue. I’d say it went off without a hitch and I commend the guys at Texas Parks and Wildlife for thinking big. I hope it paves the way for other like minded promoters to take advantage of this great facility… Port Aransas Music Festival anybody? More wangin’ and twangin’… Ok, truth be told… we didn’t stick around for Pat Green. I got mixed reviews from people I know who did stick around, but it was mostly favorable. I’ve seen Green maybe a dozen times and you may have noticed I don’t do big crowds well. So it was back to the Back Porch for more wangin’ and twangin’ with Houston Marchman. It wasn’t quite as packed on Saturday, probably because most everyone was at the Pat Green show. But, Marchman was good. He has that laid back Lyle Lovett smooth sound and Rusty Wier’s old guitarist of 16 years, John Fannin, backed him up. It was good old country music complete with pedal steel. I really enjoyed it. Actually, sitting at the Back Porch bar in Port A on any beautiful Saturday night in the summer is about as good as it can possibly get. Jammin’ at the Ice House… It wouldn’t be Sunday without the weekly jam at the Ice House. For some reason I’ve felt the need to break out the folky songs I used to play 30 years ago. It’s a lot of fun and they’ll let anyone get up there. Seriously, they even let me play. Last week we had a good turn out. Arnold Govella has been showing up and playing a lot of his old Victims of Circumstance material. Come check it out. Everyone’s a rock star. DO NOT MISS LIST Wanda Jackson show postponed… I got a email from Casey Lane over at the House of Rock and the Wanda Jackson show has be postponed. Seems she has come down with the flu and had to cancel several of her engagements. The band Milk Drive will still be performing with another local band to be announced. Joe King Carrasco The unadulterated King of Tex-Mex, Joe King Carrasco and the Crowns will return to the Back Porch on Saturday, June 23 rd . Joe moved to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico years ago (when George Bush won the election) but he has been back in Texas lately playing clubs in Lubbock, Dumas (his home town), Amarillo, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and finally Port A. His band is the original Crowns from Austin (circa 1980) when Raul’s was jumping and Joe really was the king. I’ve seen him play big stages in Austin to tens of thousands of people. Another great week of music has come and gone. I’ll run it down for you, blow by blow… let’s roll!

Chupacabras attend benefit…

On Friday, June 15th, the Tarpon Ice House held a benefit for Port A resident, Carlton Lamm, who was in the final stages of a rare liver cancer.

Port A is bustin’ at the seams…

Also on Friday, our buddy Davin James played the Back Porch. Port A was busting at the seams with tourists so I decided to cut

my losses and call it a rare, early night. It can happen occasionally.

Pat Green draws 3000 people to park…On Saturday I had a choice to make… either
