The Baptism of the Lord Mark 1:7-11

Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist. Background on the Gospel Reading Today we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. In most years, this feast is celebrated on the Sunday after Epiphany. When Epiphany falls on either January 7 or 8, the Baptism of the Lord is cel-ebrated on the Monday after Epiphany. In today's Gospel we hear John the Baptist contrast his baptism of repentance with the baptism that Jesus will inaugurate. John the Baptist says that he has baptized with water, but that the one who is to come will baptize with the Holy Spirit. John's baptism was not yet a Christian baptism; it was a preparation for the Christian Baptism we celebrate today, and through which sins are forgiven and the gift of the Holy Spirit is received. In accepting John's baptism, Jesus, though sinless, united himself with all sinners. The baptism of Jesus is reported in each of the three Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Clearly, Jesus' baptism was an event of great significance for Jesus and for the early Christian community. Mark and Luke report the story from Jesus' perspective; the voice from heaven is ad-dressed to Jesus. In Matthew's Gospel, the voice from heaven speaks to all who are present. The de-scent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus at his baptism shows that something new is beginning through the baptism and ministry of Jesus. The baptism of Jesus is considered an im-portant manifestation of God in the person of Jesus, another epiphany. Jesus' baptism inaugurates his mission. Mark's Gospel moves quickly from the re-port of Jesus' baptism to Jesus' temptations in the desert to his ministry in Galilee after John's arrest. The end of the ministry of John the Baptist is the beginning of Jesus' ministry. In an analogous way, our Baptism inaugurates our mission as Christians. Surprisingly, on this the last day of the Christmas season the Gospel does not tell a story from Jesus' childhood. Instead the Gospel reveals Jesus' relationship to God: the Son of Mary and Jo-seph is also God's own Son. We believe that through Baptism we are also made children of God.

zará con el Espíritu Santo”. Por esos días, vino Jesús desde Nazaret de Galilea y fue bautizado por Juan en el Jordán. Al salir Jesús del agua, vio que los cielos se rasgaban y que el Espíritu, en figura de paloma, descendía sobre él. Se oyó entonces una voz del cielo que decía: “Tú eres mi Hijo amado; yo tengo en ti mis complacencias”.

Chrzest Pański Jan Chrzciciel tak głosił: «idzie za mną mocniejszy ode mnie, a ja nie jestem godzien, aby schyliwszy się, rozwiązać rzemyk u Jego sandałów. Ja chrzciłem was wodą, On zaś chrzcić was będzie duchem Świętym». W owym czasie przyszedł Jezus z Nazaretu w Galilei i przyjął od Jana chrzest w Jordanie. W chwili gdy wychodził z wody, ujrzał rozwierające się niebo i ducha jak gołębicę zstępującego na Niego. A z nieba odezwał się głos: «Ty jesteś moim Synem umiłowanym, w Tobie mam upodobanie».Mk 1, 7-11

Chrzest Pański

W niedzielę po uroczystości Objawienia Pańskiego (w naszej tradycji bardziej rozpowszechniona jest nazwa święta Trzech Króli) przypada święto Chrztu Pana Jezusa. Zamyka ono okres

świętowania Bożego Narodzenia. Najstarszej tradycji tego święta należy szukać w liturgii Kościoła wschodniego, ponieważ (pomimo wyraźnego udokumentowania w Ewangeliach) chrzest Jezusa nie posiadał w liturgii rzymskiej oddzielnego święta. Dekretem Świętej Kongregacji Obrzędów z 23 marca 1955 r. ustanowiono na dzień 13 stycznia, w miejsce dawnej oktawy Epifanii, wspomnienie chrztu Jezusa Chrystusa. Posoborowa reforma kalendarza liturgicznego w 1969 r. określiła ten dzień jako święto Chrztu Pańskiego. Pominięto wyrażenie "wspomnienie" i przesunięto jego termin na niedzielę po 6 stycznia. Teksty modlitw związane ze świętem Chrztu Pańskiego odzwierciedlają bardzo dokładnie i szczegółowo przekazy Ewangelii. Podkreślają przy tym związek tego święta z uroczystością Epifanii, czyli Objawienia Pańskiego. Chrystus już jako dorosły, 30-letni mężczyzna, przychodzi nad brzeg Jordanu, by z rąk Jana Chrzciciela, swojego Poprzednika, przyjąć chrzest. Chociaż sam nie miał grzechu, nie odsunął się od grzesznych ludzi: wraz z nimi wstąpił w wody Jordanu, by dostąpić oczyszczenia. W ten sposób uświęcił wodę. Opis chrztu Pana Jezusa zostawili nam wszyscy trzej synoptycy. Najszczegółowiej to wydarzenie zrelacjonował nam św. Mateusz. W dniu chrztu Jezus został przedstawiony przez swojego Ojca jako Syn posłany dla dokonania dzieła zbawienia. Misję Chrystusa potwierdza swym świadectwem Bóg Ojciec. Zamknięte przez grzech Adama niebiosa otwierają się, na Jezusa zstępuje Duch Święty. Z nieba daje się słyszeć jednoznaczny głos:

Tyś jest mój Syn umiłowany, w Tobie mam upodobanie.

związanych z dystansem i zamknięciem niektórych Kościołów. Wprowadzamy tą Mszę tylko tymczasowo.
