Faith in Jesus will enable the disciples to do the work that Jesus has done. Peter walks on water. The five loaves and two fish feed a multitude of people. The disciples can and will participate in the work of the kingdom of heaven. When Peter fears and doubts the person of Jesus, however, he falters. Peter’s example teaches us that true Christian minis-try emerges from the faith that Jesus is the Messiah, God’s only Son.

Matthew 14:22-33

Jesus walks on water, and the disciples acknowledge him as the Son of God. Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s Gospel directly follows last week’s account of Jesus feeding a crowd of more than 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. For the sake of the crowds, Jesus had postponed his time of solitude. Now, at last, Jesus finds some time for quiet and prayer. He sends his disciples ahead of him by boat, dismisses the crowds, and then with-draws to the mountain to pray. The disciples do not fare well. They struggle to weather the wind and waves, making little pro-gress in their journey. We are reminded of a previ-ous story in Chapter 8 of Matthew’s Gospel, when Jesus calms the seas. This time, however, Jesus does not calm the seas, and the disciples do not express fear until they see Jesus walking toward them on the water. In this story it is not the storm that is feared but the sight of Jesus before them, whom they mis-take for a ghost. Clues like these suggest that this story is about the disciples’ growing understanding of the identity of Jesus. In continuity with last week’s Gos-pel about the feeding of the multitude, today’s Gos-pel is also about what the disciples’ faith in Jesus will enable them to do. In last week’s Gospel, when the disciples see the crowds, they ask Jesus to send the crowds away. Jesus turns the situation around, telling the disciples to feed the crowd with the provi-sions that they have. Both of these Gospels tell us much about ministry. Jesus calls to the disciples and calms their fears. He is not a ghost. The impulsive Peter seeks proof that the person is indeed Jesus. He asks Jesus to call him out onto the water, and Jesus grants this request. Peter’s fear and doubt overtake him, howev-er, once he is walking on the water. Jesus reaches out to Peter and saves him. When Jesus and Peter enter the boat, Matthew reports that the wind ceases, and the disciples confess that Jesus is the Son of God.

SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN) (1891-1942) August 9 “Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand, “let us go for our people!” These were Edith Stein’s last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch bishops’ condemnation of their geno-cide, took into custody all Catholic converts from Judaism. Born Jewish, but non-practicing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth led to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as professor and author and, finally, to the Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one sitting, then declared, “That is the Truth!” Baptized on January 1, 1922, observed then as the feast of Jesus’ initiation into the covenant of Abraham, confirmed on February 2, the feast of Jesus’ Presentation in the Temple, Edith entered the cloistered Carmelites in Cologne, trans-ferring to a convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi persecution of the Jews, her presence could imperil the safety of the other nuns. LA PRESENCIA DE DIOS Después del milagro en que Jesús camina sobre el agua, los discípulos exclaman: “Verdaderamente, tú eres el Hijo de Dios” (Mateo 14:33). Es probable que la mayoría de los cristianos nunca vivan un milagro tan dramático. Igual que Elías, esperamos la manifestación de Dios en otros momentos. Tal vez el más grande reto para el creyente es estar en constante sintonía con la presen-cia de Dios en los sucesos de la vida diaria. Es una postura que toma años desarrollar. Otros parecen encontrar al Señor con facilidad en las cosas sim-ples. A medida que transcurre la semana, busquemos la presencia de Dios en las pequeñas cosas que nos rodean. Santa Teresa Benedicta de la Cruz (1891-1942) 9 de agosto Edith Stein nació y creció en una familia ju-día muy piadosa. Siempre fue muy inteligente y a los 13 años renunció a Dios, declarándose atea. A los 23 años obtuvo un doctorado en filosofía y, tras el testimonio de la viuda de quien fuera su maestro, leyó en una sola noche la vida de Santa Teresa de Ávila y ahí encontró la verdad. Abrazó la fe cristia-na y se hizo bautizar, cosa que causó mucho dolor a su madre. Posteriormente, más dolor causó cuando les dijo que se haría monja carmelita, como Teresa. Ahí brilló por su pensamiento filosófico y también por su capacidad de enseñar. Como religiosa adoptó el nombre Benedicta de la Cruz (bendecida de la cruz), nombre que marcaría su vida de sacrificio. Fue trasladada a Holanda, pero ahí, en 1942 llegó la Gestapo (policía secreta alemana) y la arrestaron por ser judía. Junto con otros hermanos y hermanas, la enviaron en un tren hasta Auschwitz, un campo de concentración que se encuentra en Polonia, ahí, murió valientemente en la cámara de gas. En aquel tiempo, in-mediatamente después de la multiplicación de los panes, Jesús hizo que sus discípu-los subieran a la barca y se dirigieran a la otra orilla, mientras él despedía a la

gente. Después de despedirla, subió al monte a solas para orar. Llegada la noche, estaba él solo allí. Entretanto, la barca iba ya muy lejos de la costa, y las olas la sacudían, porque el viento era contrario. A la madrugada, Jesús fue hacia ellos, ca-minando sobre el agua. Los discípulos, al verlo an-dar sobre el agua, se espantaron, y decían: “¡Es un fantasma!” Y daban gritos de terror. Pero Jesús les dijo enseguida: “Tranquilícense y no teman. Soy yo”. Entonces le dijo Pedro: “Señor, si eres tú, mándame ir a ti caminando sobre el agua”. Jesús le contestó: “Ven”. Pedro bajó de la barca y comenzó a caminar sobre el agua hacia Jesús; pero al sentir la fuerza del viento, le entró miedo, comenzó a hundir-se y gritó: “¡Sálvame, Señor!” Inmediatamente Jesús le tendió la mano, lo sostuvo y le dijo: “Hombre de poca fe, ¿por qué dudaste?” En cuanto subieron a la barca, el viento se calmó. Los que estaban en la barca se postraron ante Jesús diciendo: “Verdaderamente tú eres el Hijo de Dios”.

Wieczór zapadł, a On sam tam przebywał. Łódź zaś była już o wiele stadiów oddalona od brzegu, miotana falami, bo wiatr był przeciwny. Lecz o czwartej straży nocnej przyszedł do nich, krocząc po jeziorze. Uczniowie, zobaczywszy Go kroczącego po jeziorze, zlękli się, myśląc, że to zjawa, i ze strachu krzyknęli. Jezus zaraz przemówił do nich: «Odwagi! To Ja jestem, nie bójcie się!» Na to odezwał się Piotr: «Panie, jeśli to Ty jesteś, każ mi przyjść do siebie po wodzie!» A On rzekł: «Przyjdź!» Piotr wyszedł z łodzi i krocząc po wodzie, podszedł do Jezusa. Lecz na widok silnego wiatru uląkł się i gdy zaczął tonąć, krzyknął: «Panie, ratuj mnie!» Jezus natychmiast wyciągnął rękę i chwycił go, mówiąc: «Czemu zwątpiłeś, człowiecze małej wiary?» Gdy wsiedli do łodzi, wiatr się uciszył. Ci zaś, którzy byli w łodzi, upadli przed Nim, mówiąc: «Prawdziwie jesteś Synem Bożym». Mt 14, 22-33

Święto Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, obchodzone 15 sierpnia, to jedno z najstarszych świąt maryjnych w Kościele katolickim. W polskiej tradycji znane jest jako święto Matki Bożej Zielnej. Dogmat o wniebowzięciu NMP ogłosił papież Pius XII w 1950 r.

Kult Maryi Wniebowziętej był w Kościele bardzo żywy i zdecydowanie wyróżniał się wśród innych. Wystawiono tysiące świątyń pod wezwaniem Matki Bożej Wniebowziętej. Powstało osiem zakonów pod tym wezwaniem. To przekonanie wiernych, że Maryja po śmierci została wraz z ciałem i duszą wzięta do nieba, potwierdził 64 lata

temu swoją decyzją papież Pius XII i ogłosił dogmat o wniebowzięciu NMP (dogmat - objawiona, niepodważalna prawda wiary). Święto ku czci Maryi wziętej do nieba obchodzone było już w pierwszych wiekach pod nazwą "zaśnięcia Maryi", potem zastąpiono je Wniebowzięciem Najświętszej Maryi Panny. Ok. VI wieku w Konstantynopolu uroczystości ustalono na dzień 15 sierpnia; od następnego stulecia zaczęto je obchodzić i w Europie. Kościoły wschodnie, zachowujące kalendarz starego stylu (juliański) obchodzą święto 13 dni później, czyli 28 sierpnia. Święto Wniebowzięcia zalicza się do najstarszych na ziemiach polskich uroczystości maryjnych. W Kościele katolickim dni poprzedzające uroczystość Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny są tradycyjnie okresem pielgrzymek do sanktuariów maryjnych, a u unitów i prawosławnych święto Zaśnięcia Maryi poprzedza 14-dniowy post. 15 sierpnia to dzień kulminacji licznych pielgrzymek pieszych, które spotykają się na Jasnej Górze w Częstochowie. Co roku bierze w nich udział ok. 250 tys. pątników z całej Polski. W tradycji ludowej święto 15 sierpnia jest dziękczynieniem za zebrane plony. Tego dnia przynosi się do kościoła do poświęcenia bukiety złożone ze zbóż, warzyw, owoców, kwiatów i ziół. Wokół święta powstało w kulturze polskiej wiele zwyczajów związanych z poświęconymi w ten dzień wiankami uplecionymi ze świeżych ziół, które miały zabezpieczać przed wieloma chorobami.
