Third Sunday of Easter Luke 24:35-48

Jesus appears again to his disciples and shares a meal with them. Background on the Gospel Reading On the third Sunday of Easter, we continue to hear Gos-pel accounts of Jesus’ appearances to his disciples fol-lowing his Resurrection. Today’s reading, taken from the Gospel of Luke, follows immediately after the report of Jesus' appearance to his disciples on the road to Em-maus. This is the event being recounted by the disciples in the opening verse of today’s Gospel. Consistently in the reports of Jesus’ post-Resurrection appearances, Jesus greets his disciples with the words, “Peace be with you.” This is a most appropriate greet-ing. The disciples have witnessed the death of someone they loved, and they now fear for their own lives as well. Peace is what they need more than anything else. Jesus often connects this greeting of peace with another gift—forgiveness. In today’s Gospel, this connection is made in the final verses. Even as they hear Jesus’ greeting of peace, the disciples are startled and terrified. They are uncertain about what to make of the figure before them and, quite understand-ably, they mistake Jesus for a ghost. Yet the figure be-fore them is not a ghost; Jesus invites them to experi-ence his resurrected body with their senses, to look and to touch. The figure before them is flesh and bone, still bearing the marks of crucifixion. Although the disciples cannot forget his suffering and death, peace begins to take root in their hearts, as their fears turn to joy and amazement. As further proof of his identity and of his resurrected body, Jesus eats with his disciples. The disciples have known Jesus best through the meals that he has shared with them. Descriptions of these meals are a defining element of Luke’s Gospel. By eating with his disciples after his Resurrection, Jesus recalls all these meals, and most importantly, he recalls the Last Supper. Luke’s report of the Last Supper and the meals that Je-sus shared after his Resurrection unveil for us the signif-icance of the Eucharist. Having shared a meal with his disciples, Jesus now uncovers for them the significance of what was written about him in the Scriptures. So, too, our celebration of the Mass is an encounter with Jesus, through the Word and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. As Jesus commissions his disciples to be witnesses to what Scriptures foretold, our celebration of the Eucha-rist commissions us. Like the disciples, we are sent to announce the good news of Jesus’ forgiveness of sins.

Saint Theodore of Sykeon Feast day April 22

Saints Stories for All Ages St. Theodore spent his childhood at his mother’s inn that doubled as a brothel at Sykeon in Asia Minor. When Theo-dore was about six years old a wonderful cook arrived at the inn who created so much business that his mother stopped her prostitution. The cook became Theodore’s spiritual director, teaching him to visit churches, to pray and fast, and to use the sacraments. In his teens Theodore lived as a hermit in a cave near Sykeon. Then he shut himself up in a mountainous cave to practice extreme mortification. But Theodore also became well known for serving his neighbors with his gifts of heal-ing, exorcism, and prophecy. For example, once he helped the treasurer of Heliopolis, who came to him with this tear-ful story: “Have pity on me, oh servant of God, for the tragedy which has befallen me! I sent my elder son to collect the church-taxes from the villages and he has taken the whole sum and made off! I therefore implore your holiness to pray to God to restore him to me, because all my substance is insufficient to pay back to the church the large sum he has taken.” And the holy man sent this reply . . . “If you will agree that when he is found you will not give him a beating nor com-pel him to give up more money than the amount he stole, God will be entreated and restore your son to you” . . . Then the father agreed to these terms on oath. . . .Then the holy man prayed to the Lord to hold up the man who had committed the theft in whatsoever place he might be and to make known with all speed where he would be found. . . .Now the holy man’s prayer reached the son in a place close to the city of Nicea . . . Some men who knew him and the treasurer . . . recognized him and . . . laid hold on him and sent word to the treasurer. The latter came and took the stolen gold away from him and returned to the holy man giving thanks to God. At the young age of eight-een Theodore was ordained a priest. Upon his return he adopted some weird ascetical practices. Annually from Christmas to Palm Sunday he had himself suspended from a rock in a cage. He also wrapped himself in an iron breastplate, iron collar, rings, and chains. His reputed holiness attracted many disciples, and he devel-oped a large monastic settlement at Sykeon. When the church at Anastasiopolis chose Theodore as bishop, he reluctantly accepted the office. About his ad-ministration we know very little as his biography records only a long series of his miracles. After ten years he re-signed because he was neglecting his prayer and his monks at Sykeon. Theodore retired to an oratory near Heliopolis. There he exercised a ministry of healing and miracles until his death in 613.

III Domingo de Pascua Lc 24, 35-48

Cuando los dos discípulos regresaron de Emaús y llegaron al sitio donde estaban reunidos los apósto-les, les contaron lo que les había pasado en el ca-mino y cómo habían reconocido a Jesús al partir el pan. Mientras hablaban de esas cosas, se presentó Jesús en medio de ellos y les dijo: “La paz esté con uste-des”. Ellos, desconcertados y llenos de temor, creían ver un fantasma. Pero él les dijo: “No teman; soy yo. ¿Por qué se espantan? ¿Por qué surgen dudas en su interior? Miren mis manos y mis pies. Soy yo en per-sona. Tóquenme y convénzanse: un fantasma no tie-ne ni carne ni huesos, como ven que tengo yo”. Y les mostró las manos y los pies. Pero como ellos no aca-baban de creer de pura alegría y seguían atónitos, les dijo: “¿Tienen aquí algo de comer?” Le ofrecieron un trozo de pescado asado; él lo tomó y se puso a comer delante de ellos. Después les dijo: “Lo que ha sucedido es aquello de que les hablaba yo, cuando aún estaba con ustedes: que tenía que cumplirse todo lo que estaba escrito de mí en la ley de Moisés, en los profetas y en los sal-mos”. Entonces les abrió el entendimiento para que com-prendieran las Escrituras y les dijo: “Está escrito que el Mesías tenía que padecer y había de resucitar de entre los muertos al tercer día, y que en su nombre se había de predicar a todas las naciones, comenzando por Jerusalén, la necesidad de volverse a Dios para el perdón de los pecados. Ustedes son testigos de esto”.

Queridos feligreses, Como sabrá, comenzaremos a trabajar en las reno-vaciones del piso en la sema-na del 19 de abril, la con-strucción está programada para durar dos semanas. Por lo tanto, necesitaremos re-

alizar los siguientes cambios: �� Las misas matutinas a partir del lunes 19 de mar-

zo se celebrarán en el Makuch Hall. �� Los servicios del miércoles se cancelarán duran-

te dos semanas a partir del 19 de marzo. �� Las misas de fin de semana se celebrarán al aire

libre el 24 y 25 de abril, y el 1 y 2 de mayo.

Tercer Domingo de Pascua NO LO QUE ESPERABA ¿Alguna vez te ha tocado esperar algo durante mu-cho tiempo que llegaste a pensar que eso nunca podría pasar? Tal vez el día de tu graduación, de tu boda, del nacimiento de un hijo. Los israelitas habían esperado por siglos la llegada del Mesías. Sin embargo, cuando Jesús llegó, el tan esperado Ungido muchos no creyeron en él; pues él no era lo que habían esperado. Se suponía que el Mesías sería fuerte, un poderoso comandante de ejércitos, no alguien humilde, compasivo y sufriente. Después de su resurrección, Jesús se apareció a los discípulos y les explicó todo lo que había di-cho durante el tiempo que estuvo con ellos, abriendo sus mentes a lo que estaba escrito en la Escrituras para que pu-dieran aceptar su sufrimiento y muerte, y regocijarse en su resurrección. EL AMOR DE DIOS EN CARNE Y HUESO Aunque los discípulos llegaron a creer que Jesús era el Mesías, su crucifixión y muerte los había dejado temero-sos y confundidos. La noticia del sepulcro vacío y su apari-ción a los dos discípulos en el camino de Emaús aumento su confusión. Parece que, al principio, la presencia de Jesús con ellos no hizo que disminuyera su duda. De hecho, ellos esta-ban “asustados y aterrorizados pensando que estaban viendo a un fantasma” (Lucas 24:37). Jesús observó que necesitaban una prueba física que les mostrara que era él quien estaba en medio de ellos; quienes tuvieron que ver las marcas de los clavos en sus manos y pies, para ver el amor de Dios en car-ne y hueso, en uno que comía en medio de ellos. Solo cuan-do su miedo y confusión se había calmado, pudieron escu-char la historia, la historia sagrada de cómo Cristo sufriría y resucitaría de entre los muertos. Solo cuando estuvieron llenos con la paz de Cristo estarían listos para dar testimonio, para compartir la historia sagrada con otras personas. No-sotros también estamos invitados a escuchar la historia y a percibir el amor de Dios por nosotros en Jesucristo.

III Niedziela Wielkanocna Uczniowie opowiadali, co ich spotkało w drodze i jak poznali Jezusa przy łamaniu chleba. A gdy rozmawiali o tym, On sam stanął pośród nich i rzekł do nich: «Pokój wam!» Zatrwożonym i wylękłym zdawało się, że widzą ducha. Lecz On rzekł do nich: «Czemu jesteście zmieszani i dlaczego wątpliwości budzą się w waszych sercach? Popatrzcie na moje ręce i nogi: to Ja jestem. Dotknijcie Mnie i przekonajcie się: duch nie ma ciała ani kości, jak widzicie, że Ja mam». Przy tych słowach pokazał im swoje ręce i nogi. Lecz gdy oni z radości jeszcze nie wierzyli i pełni byli zdumienia, rzekł do nich: «Macie tu coś do jedzenia?» Oni podali Mu kawałek pieczonej ryby. Wziął i spożył przy nich. Potem rzekł do nich: «To właśnie znaczyły słowa, które mówiłem do was, gdy byłem jeszcze z wami: Musi się wypełnić wszystko, co napisane jest o Mnie w Prawie Mojżesza, u Proroków i w Psalmach». Wtedy oświecił ich umysły, aby rozumieli Pisma. I rzekł do nich: «Tak jest napisane: Mesjasz będzie cierpiał i trzeciego dnia zmartwychwstanie; w imię Jego głoszone będzie nawrócenie i odpuszczenie grzechów wszystkim narodom, począwszy od Jeruzalem. Wy jesteście świadkami tego». Łk 24, 35-48
