Random Thoughts on a Sunday Morning I woke up on Sunday morning wondering if we have the imaginations to help our students to color outside the lines. Do we allow the imaginations and creativity of our young to go beyond the limits and boundaries of the ordinary “factory” model of education? What happens to the fifth grader who has an artistic ability of an eighth grade level or beyond? What happens to the seventh grade student staring out the window, confined to a text , while a counterpart on another level is exploring an infinite universe? Or the first grade student, who is so inspired that the inherent imagination and creativity within them leads their teacher to enable them to reach beyond the limits and boundaries of a standard. I was wondering about those students in the classroom, similar to Evan Taylor in the movie August Rush, who, while trying to unravel the mystery of his life as a young teenager, is advised to “follow the music.” I was wondering how the students who have been given the gift to “follow music” are able to do that when still reciting that EGBDF (Every Good Boy Does Fine); and the student knows like August that “the music is all around us, all you have to do is listen.” Maybe one or more of our students want to write a rhapsody. I thought of the many students in our classrooms like Jamal Wallace, the black teenager in the movie Finding Forrester, who was generously offered a scholarship at a prestigious private school for his basketball skill, but like all of our young is also searching for an identity beyond what has been assigned to him. Mentored by someone outside the "factory," he is told to "find his words." I began thinking about the student who wants to put the inspiration of thought onto paper in composition or poetry or song, while sitting in a class with others still grappling with understanding that a verb is an action word. Somehow as Jamal is taught, we have to get be on the "soup questions." I think of Erin Gruwell, a teacher who left the safety of New-port Beach to teach in Woodrow Wilson high school, a desegregated school in which "at risk" children are randomly selected to integrate the school. The "unteachable's," as they are called, are challenged to change themselves and the world, creating the "Freedom Writers Diaries," the story of their own awakening in their search for an identity beyond and ID number. And of course one of my favorites -Pay it Forward, in which the young student Trevor McKin-ney, is asked by his teacher to "think of an idea that could change the world." Trevor creates "pay it forward" not only a risk in his search for his identity: but ultimately a risk to his life. Trevor says, "I think some people are too scared, or something. I guess it's hard for people who are so used to things the way they are-even if they're bad to change." I was trying to think of the students who have a passion and enthusiasm, so inspirited in their compassion and generosity, that perhaps they would be the ones who would someday change the world. Called to Serve Our children are in need of positive role models to serve as catechists and volunteers for our Parish School of Religion. We are attempting to get 3 or 4 people to help out with each class so that our children meet and form relationships with a varie-ty of teachers and our volunteers remain joyful and well prepared. Consider sharing your faith and walking with our young disciples as we all grow closer to God by being responsible for only 6-12 lessons throughout the year. Our classes will be: • PreK (age 3,4, and early 5)

• K & 1

• 2nd grade (First Reconciliation & First Com-munion)

• 3rd & 4th grade

• 5th & 6th grade

7th & 8th grade (Confirmation preparation)
