Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I am wondering how to inspire more people to go to confession. I sit in the confessional every
Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. and again on Sundays from 7:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. I try to arrive as early as possible to St. John the Baptist and St. John Bosco churches so that I can be available in case
anyone wants to go to confession. I found these quotes from saints regarding this wonderful sacrament:
“Go to your confessor, open your heart to him; display to him all the recesses of your soul; take
the advice that he will give you with the utmost humility and simplicity. For God, Who has an infinite love for obedience, frequently renders profitable the counsels we take from others, but especially from
those who are the guides of our souls.” (St.Francis de Sales)
“in failing to confess, Lord, I would only hide You from myself, not myself from
You.” (St.Augustine)
“Confession is like a bridle that keeps the soul which reflects on it from committing sin, but any-
thing left unconfessed we continue to do without fear as if in the dark.” (St. John Climacus)
“A soul does not benefit from the sacrament of confession if it is not humble. Pride keeps it in
darkness. The soul neither knows how, nor is it willing, to probe with precision the depths of its own misery. It puts on a mask and avoids everything that might bring it recovery."” (St.Faustina)
“In the life of the body a man is sometimes sick, and unless he takes medicine, he will die. Even so in the spiritual life a man is sick on account of sin. For that reason he needs medicine so that he may be restored to health; and this grace is bestowed in the Sacrament of Penance.” (St. Thomas Aquinas)
I really hope that we will see an increase in those availing themselves of this wonderful sacra-ment.
One final note: next Saturday, August 22nd is the Feast of the Queenship of Mary. If at all pos-sible why don’t you try to come to Mass at 8:30 a.m. to honor the Mother of God, our Queen?
Take care and have a good week.
Yours Truly,
Father Timothy Davison
In this feast, particularly cherished by the Popes of modern times, we celebrate Mary as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. Pope Pius XII in the Papal Encyclical Ad Coeli Reginam proposed the traditional doctrine on the Queenship of Mary and established this feast for the Universal Church.
Pope Pius IX said of Mary's queenship: "Turning her maternal Heart toward us and dealing with the affair of our salvation, she is concerned with the whole human race. Constituted by the Lord Queen of Heaven and earth, and exalted above all choirs of Angels and the ranks of Saints in Heaven, standing at the right hand of Her only-begotten Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, she petitions most powerfully with Her maternal prayers, and she obtains what she seeks." And Pope Pius XII added the following: "We commend that on the festival there be renewed the consecration of the human race to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Upon this there is founded a great hope that there will rejoice in the triumph of religion and in Christian peace...
...Therefore, let all approach with greater confidence now than before, to the throne of mer-cy and grace of our Queen and Mother to beg help in difficultly, light in darkness and solace in trouble and sorrow...
. . Whoever, therefore, honours the lady ruler of the Angels and of men - and let no one think themselves exempt from the payment of that tribute of a grateful and loving soul - let them call upon her as most truly Queen and as the Queen who brings the blessings of peace, that She may show us all, after this exile, Jesus, who will be our enduring peace and joy."
