The cathedral is massive and was packed to standing room only. The crowd! I think every nationality was represented. Even though there were large crowds it was extremely intimate and parish church felt liturgy. There was no huge choir, just one lone cantor leading us. The pipe organ though to be honest was pretty spectacular. The one defining feature for me in the midst of the multitude was 'that we though many are one body'. Our one focus was the Eucharist and it was amazing. It must have been what the feeding of the five thousand was like. All those people, all fed for the journey home with bread, bread given by Christ, having heard His words and been fed in spirit. The homily was amazing. I gained a new insight in to Elijah's story. I was really sorry this time that I hadn't organized a Celi Brit from the bishop before I left Australia: I would have liked to have concelebrated that Mass. I sat about 20 meters from the Altar and yet it was like I was right beside it, part of it, included, welcome. It's how of course we should feel regardless of the parish community we belong too. The homily focussed on the food for the journey and what sustains us. How the Eucharist feeds us both body and soul. And as with Elijah the importance is that this food, like his comes from God, calling us, transforming us to be more God like. And can you believe it, Father gave us homework! LOL you know I like liturgical homework! This sustenance is real food for the challenges and difficulties of what lies ahead. Just like Elijah we have to be nourished and given sustenance for what lies ahead. So he suggested two things: firstly if you are facing 'challenges' come to the Eucharist more often as a source of support and wisdom; and secondly, share the sustenance you have received with others. Even when they are not with us physically they are with us none-the-less because of our love for them. So let the sustenance I have been given in the Word and at the Altar feed them too. In coming to the Eucharist more often we get more clues for life, more witness for faith, more food for the task so that each difficulty faced is done in a more God like manner. Father used the example of the challenges facing Christian men and women in big business who are called to be decision makers in a cut-throat world and yet to be practicing people of faith. In the world but not of the world. The challenge of course is how we are all called to be people of God regardless of where we are called to be. It's not always easy but in faith we have the answer. Best wishes, Greg
