2010-11 Doane Women’s Track & Field4

The 2011 season will be a little different for Tiger track and fi eld compared to the last 19 years. For the fi rst time since 1991, the Tigers enter the season without the title of conference indoor champion. Doane’s 19-year run came to an end last year with a second place fi nish at the indoor championship meet, however, the pride of the Tigers shown through with a come-from-behind tie for the outdoor crown in May.

Doane will need to replace seven indoor and seven outdoor all-conference recipients if they are to contend for the conference crowns once again. Little drop off if any is expected for the traditionally tough Tigers.

Five seniors return who earned All-GPAC honors last year. Sara Bloom placed in the indoor pentathlon while Sarah Hinman placed in the outdoor shot put and discus. Placing in both championship meets were Leah Petersen in the pole vault, Alyssa Rogge in the high jump and Amanda Woodward in the indoor 800m and 4x400m relay and the outdoor 4x400m and 4x800m relays.

The sophomore and junior class return a combined 42 All-GPAC performances. Sophomores Blair Dixon and Jillian Ourada top the list with seven and six All-GPAC performances, respectively.

In the sprints, Dixon will be joined by Cami Hasenohr as all-conference performers. Middle distance runners will be led by Woodward and Allison Hartnett who earned honors at Dana College last year. No distance runners return from last year that placed in the conference meet. In the hurdles, Ourada placed during both seasons.

The Tiger relay teams should be solid once again. All four members of the indoor 4x400m team return in Dixon, Ourada, Woodward and Alyssa Straube. Three members of the indoor 4x800m team return in Mikayla Baumert, Jessica Dreiwer and Lizzie Kolbo. Three members return off the outdoor 4x100m squad in Dixon, Hasenohr and Natalie Kramer. Baumert, Dixon, Straube and Woodward return off the 4x400m team and the 4x800m team returns Baumert, Kolbo and Woodward.

The fi eld events should be strong once again. Kramer and Shelby Meier lead the triple jumpers while Emily Reed placed in the long jump a year ago. Rogge is the only returning all-conference high jumper while Petersen has the same distinction in the pole vault.

In the throws, Hinman will be joined by Whitney Collins, Ashton Henderson and Kelsee Meissner. All four qualifi ed for nationals a year ago in a throwing event.

The multi-events will be led by Ourada after she won the indoor conference pentathlon title. Kayti Mark will be joined by Reed, Bloom, Brooke Pfeifer and Bailey Kremke as all-conference performers as well.

The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) is an affi liated conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), consisting of 12 private, faith-based colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Originally founded in 1969 as the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC), the league retained all six of its charter members - Concordia, Dana, Doane, Hastings, Midland and Nebraska Wesleyan. In 1992, the NIAC added Northwestern and became the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference. Eight years later, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Mount Marty and Sioux Falls joined the conference which became the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in 2000-2001. Briar Cliff entered the league in 2002-2003 and Morningside became the 13th member starting with the 2003-2004 school year. On June 30, 2010, Dana closed to give the GPAC 12 members.

The GPAC has 17 NAIA National Champions...In 2000-2001 the Northwestern women and men won NAIA Division II National Basketball Championships, while the Doane women shared the outdoor NAIA Track and Field title. 2001-2002 brought two NAIA titles to our league. The Hastings women won the NAIA Division II National Basketball title, while Doane’s women won the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship outright. In 2002-2003 the GPAC won two more National Championships with the Hastings women repeating as NAIA Division II National Basketball Champions (defeating GPAC foe Dakota Wesleyan in the title game), and the Northwestern men winning the NAIA Division II crown for the second time in three years. The Morningside women’s basketball teams won the 2004 and 2005 titles in front of the hometown Sioux City fans at the Tyson Events Center. In 2006 the Hastings women’s basketball team won their third basketball title in fi ve years. The GPAC won six straight NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championships from 2001 to 2006. Also, in 2006 Dana College claimed the NAIA National Wrestling Championship, while the Nebraska Wesleyan’s men’s golf team won the NCAA III National Title. In the fall of 2006 when Sioux Falls won the Football National Championship in Savannah, Tennessee. The Northwestern women’s basketball team capped a 35-2 season in winning the 2008 NAIA Division II National Championship. The University of Sioux Falls won their second NAIA Football Title in three years by claiming the 2008 National Championship in Rome, Georgia, on December 20. In March of 2009 the Morningside Women’s Basketball team capped a perfect 38-0 season by claiming the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship (defeating GPAC foe Hastings in the title game). On December 19, 2009, the Sioux Falls Football Team Claimed Back-to-Back National Titles and won their fourth overall National Title while capping a 15-0 season in Rome, Georgia. In March of 2010 Northwestern’s women’s basketball team won the NAIA Division II National Championship. The GPAC has now won nine of the last ten NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championships! The GPAC has many individual NAIA and NCAA Division III National Champions in track and fi eld (Nebraska Wesleyan is dual member of both the NAIA and NCAA Division III).

Corey Westra of Sioux City, Iowa, is the GPAC Commissioner and Information Director.

DOANE WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD HISTORY

“Tradition Never Graduates” has been one of the Tiger mottos over the past couple of years. Doane College has seen many athletes come in and excel both on the track and in the classroom. The Tigers have more than 280 NAIA All-American honors and 103 NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

The women’s program won the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championship in 2001 and 2002. Then-head coach Fred Beile was named NAIA Coach-of-the-Year in both years as well as in 1989 and 1994. He coached 327 All-Americans (men and women combined) while he was head coach and now he serves as a mentor to the program as an assistant coach. In 1987, Beile was inducted into the NAIA Hall-of-Fame.

Doane’s great track and fi eld successes came during the 2001 and 2002 outdoor seasons when the Tigers claimed the NAIA National Championship. To date, they remain the only team national titles claimed at Doane.

In 2001, the Tigers had seven All-American performances and three individual national titles claimed. Mary Livengood won a pair of individual crowns as she claimed the 5,000m and 10,000m titles. Nicole Stehlik won the javelin. Other All-American performances came from Wendy Brouillette (400m), Tiffany Ferguson (high jump), Susan Klitz (heptathlon) and Rochelle Schmidt (triple jump). The Tigers shared the National Championship with Life University (Ga.) with 59 points apiece. Central State University (Ohio) was third with 56 points. The championships were held in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

The 2002 title came without an individual champion and a balanced attack. Doane won the title out-right with 67 points, topping second place Azusa Pacifi c University (Calif.) as they fi nished with 60 points. Fourteen individuals earned All-American honors. They were Wendy Brouillette (4x100, 400m), Jessica Caruso (pole vault), Lisa Dingman (4x800), Tiffany Ferguson (high jump), Erin Gillespie (4x800), Mary Hagemann (shot put), Julie Harms (4x100), Camille Hinze (4x100), Melissa Joel (4x800), Stacey Johnson (pole vault), Brittany Price (4x800, 5000m), Rochelle Schmidt (4x100, long jump, triple jump), Krystal Shiers (heptathlon) and Nicole Stehlik (javelin). The championships were held in Olathe, Kan.

There have been many athletes who have gone through the rigors of four seasons in the track and fi eld program. After they leave, several carry over the success they had in competition to success in their personal and professional life.

One of the more decorated Tiger athletes is Heather Rhoadarmer. She was an eight-time All-American and four-time National Champion in the shot put. Rhoadarmer also excelled in the classroom, earning NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors twice. In 2003, she was inducted into the NAIA Hall-of-Fame, becoming the fi rst female Doane athlete to earn the honor.

Rochelle Schmidt was a standout for the Tigers and will be inducted into the NAIA Hall-of-Fame in 2011. She earned 16 NAIA All-American honors (2001-04), most in Doane College history, and four National Championships in the long and triple jumps. She also holds the school record in the long and triple jump, both indoor and outdoor.

Fred Beile - Class of 1987Fred Beile came to Doane College in 1961 and served as head cross country and assistant track coach. He was an assistant track coach for 12 years before becoming the head coach in 1973. His fi rst two years at Doane, Beile coached fellow NAIA Hall-of-Fame inductee Dean White. Beile also oversaw the addition of women’s cross country in the 1970s. His women’s teams became a national power in the 1990s, earning runner-up honors in 1993 and third place in 1992. During his time as the Tiger’s track head coach, Beile’s womens team won two team National Titles (2001, 2002). He coached 327 All-Americans, 60 individual National Champions, and 101 All-American Scholar Athletes. His squads won a combination

of 51 conference titles. Biele was named NAIA National Coach-of-the-Year six times and is a member of the NAIA & Doane Hall-of-Fame. Follow his “retirement” in 2002, Beile continued to coach the Tigers sprints, hurdles, and relay teams while adding more All-Americans to his already lofty resume. He offi cially retired following the 2010 track and fi eld season.

Heather Rhoadarmer - Class of 2003Heather Rhoadarmer is one of the most decorated Doane College athletes in history. She was a four-time NAIA All-American in both Indoor and Outdoor competition and a four-time National Champion in the shot put. She took runner-up honors in the indoor shot put her senior year and was third in the outdoor shot put her sophomore year. In 1994 and 1995, she claimed All-American honors in the discus with a sixth place fi nish in 1994 and a fi fth place mark in 1995. Rhoadarmer excelled in the classroom, earning NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors twice. Rhoadarmer was the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference Champion in the shot put from 1992-95 and was discus champion in 1992. She was named the

Suzanne Weeder Einspahr - Class of 2008Suzanne Weeder Einspahr is a fi ne example of the type of student-athlete that is the hallmark of the NAIA. A 1994 cum laude graduate of Doane College, she earned her degree in Business Administration and International Studies. True to the liberal arts tradition, her undergraduate studies included a year abroad studying in Japan. The year hiatus proved to be valuable for Einspahr from both an academic and athletic perspective. Riddled with injuries her fi rst two years in both cross country and track, the time in Japan provided the relief she needed. When she returned, she became one of the most dominant distance performers in her era. Einspahr became a seven-time NAIA All-American in track and fi eld

and two-time All-American in cross country. She claimed national titles in the indoor mile and outdoor 3000 meters in 1994 and took home runner-up fi nishes in the 1993 and 1994 outdoor 1500 meters. Her leadership contributed to unprecedented success for the Doane women’s cross country and track and fi eld teams. The Tigers took home a third place fi nish in cross country in 1992 and a second place fi nish in 1993. The track and fi eld team earned a 1994 third place indoor fi nish and a runner-up title at the 1994 outdoor national championship. Einspahr’s competitive spirit inspired others wanting to stretch themselves to new levels of excellence. She was inducted into the Doane Hall-of-Fame in 2009.

Dr. Mary Livengood Sutherland - Class of 2010Dr. Mary Livengood is a 2001 graduate of Doane College and was an excellent example of the type of scholar-athlete that is a hallmark of both the NAIA and Doane. Livengood’s individual accomplishments are extensive in both cross country and track & fi eld. From an institutional perspective, none of those accomplishments are more important than her performances at the 2001 National Outdoor Championships. In 2001, Livengood was National Champion at both 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. Those performances were instrumental in Doane winning the 2001 Women’s Outdoor Championship, a fi rst in school history. Livengood’s athletic accomplishments reveal a person who persisted over her

four years at Doane, placing virtually fi rst in every major event during her senior year. In addition to her athletic success, Livengood was a model student, achieving Dean’s List recognition each of her eight semesters. Livengood’s collegiate career was a unique combination of academic brilliance, athletic success and an unyielding determination to improve.

When Thomas Doane, chief civil engineer of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, began building the railroad across Nebraska in the late 1800s, his goal was not only to enhance civilized life for the pioneers, but also to build a liberal arts college on the Nebraska frontier. He and the Congregationalists soon chose the town of Crete, overlooking the Big Blue River, for a college on the plains. The college maintains historical ties with the United Church of Christ. Thomas Doane’s vision of a college in the tradition of Harvard and Yale has become a reality. Fully established in 1872, Doane is Nebraska’s fi rst private liberal arts and sciences college. From the college’s formative years under the tutelage of fi rst president David Brainerd Perry to the current 11th president, Jonathan Brand, the college continues its purpose to educate students to serve and lead in the state, the nation and the world. The Crete campus serves approximately 1,000 residential students on 300 scenic acres. Designated a state arboretum, the once treeless landscape now boasts more than 100 varieties of trees, numerous plantings, ponds, and swans. Additional highlights include the four-year graduation guarantee for students…graduate within four years or the college will pay for a fi fth year of course work. A travel scholarship for students provides opportunities to travel on college-sponsored trips in the U.S. or abroad. Doane College was the fi rst institution in the nation to initiate a warranty for its education graduates to hiring school districts, and guarantees teacher education graduates a position. Doane College also offers three graduate degree programs, including the Master of Arts in Management (MAM), Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC), and Master of Education (MED) in Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Leadership.

Doane Mission Statement Doane College, a comprehensive college in the liberal arts tradition, offers an academic curriculum to stimulate inquiry, enhance knowledge, and promote examination and development of values and perspectives through majors and the liberal arts. The college prepares students by offering academic and co-curricular opportunities to develop abilities and skills needed in and out of the workplace. Doane also provides opportunities for students, faculty and staff to develop and practice leadership skills. Doane College is a private, independent, coeducational college serving both traditional and nontraditional students. The college continues its historical relationship with the United Church of Christ and its tradition of promoting free inquiry. The college offers instruction in the liberal arts and related professional and pre-professional areas leading to the bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, and master’s degrees. At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, Doane is committed to student-centered education characterized by close student-teacher relationships. The college serves students through residential campus programs, off-campus programs, and graduate programs. Doane seeks to attract students, faculty, and staff with diverse geographic, racial, ethnic, religious, economic, and cultural backgrounds. As the college pursues its mission, students will demonstrate the ability: I. To read, listen, write, and speak effectively. II. To think critically. III. To integrate theories with practice. IV. To collect and process information by selecting methods to improve understanding and solve problems. V. To use problem-solving skills effectively. VI. To work with others. VII. To act ethically and to lead responsibly.

DOANE ACADEMIC SUPPORTThe transition from high school to college level academics is a dramatic one, but it need not be traumatic if students make use of the resources Doane College provides through the Academic Support Center (ASC).

In contrast to many students’ high school course experiences, most college level courses demand a whole new study and exam preparation strategy. Most college professors fully expect that students will complete the assigned textbook readings and come to class prepared to ask questions and engage in discussion generated by the reading assignment. Professors’ lectures complement and supplement the required reading assignment, but they are not intended to substitute for required readings.

Likewise, students must attend lectures and labs if they are to gain the full benefi t of their educational opportunity. Completing the assigned readings, attending lectures and labs, being able to record accurate reading/lecture notes and reviewing their notes regularly in preparation for exams and fi nals are all critical to any student’s academic success.

Doane’s Academic Support Center (ASC) provides academic assistance, training and intervention to students who wish to improve their academic performance. The ASC consists of two separate programs: The Doane Learning Center (DLC) and Doane Student Support Services (DSS). Both programs are housed in the Student Services area on the lower level of Perry Campus Center.

The Doane Learning Center is a walk-in center for students wanting to raise their grades or improve their study skills. The program provides academic counseling, peer tutoring, and writing assistance.

Doane Student Support Services (DSS) is a TRIO program, federally funded through the United States Department of Education. It assists eligible students in reaching their academic and personal goals through a variety of activities. Notifi cation of eligibility is sent to new students in the fi rst few weeks of the fall and spring terms and is dependent on American citizenship AND family income level, (or) student disability status or both custodial parents/guardians having less than a four-year degree.

The Doane College athletic facilities continue to change and improve each year.

Located on the northeast end of the Doane campus, Fuhrer Field House is home to Tiger indoor track & fi eld. The Field House is also used for early season practices for baseball, softball, and tennis and will serve as an alternate practice facility for volleyball and basketball. The renovation of the athletic training room is the most recent improvement to the facility. Renovations are scheduled to increase the track size to 200 meters while redesigning the layout for tennis courts, batting cages and seating.

Simon Field was constructed in 1929 following a generous gift from G. Eli Simon, a Cambridge, Nebraska, attorney and father of a graduating senior. Simon Field is located on the north side of the campus and is home to the football and soccer teams. Lauritsen Track surrounds the fi eld and is home to the track & fi eld teams.

Field turf was installed in 2000. As part of the renovation, a new outdoor, polyurethane track was also installed. Both the fi eld and track are used by the Crete community and Crete High School. The press box was wired with Internet capabilities in the summer of 2004.

The George & Sally Haddix Center opened in Fall 2010 and is the home for Doane volleyball, basketball and dance/cheerleading. Now the center point between all athletic facilities, the Haddix Center also hosts the coaches’ offi ces, weight room and fi tness center. You can fi nd interactive computers in the front lobby that will introduce Doane Hall-of-Fame and Honor D receipents. Doane Athletic Club (DAC) memberships allow all members to utilize the weight room and fi tness center as well.

Located on the eastern end of campus, The Den is the alternate home to Doane soccer. The fi rst home of Doane Soccer, The Den is a grass surface used mostly for practices.

The Jose M. & Elizabeth Ledon Ballfi eld Complex opened in March 2007. The complex is located on the east end of campus and is home to Tiger baseball and softball. The facility includes batting cages, a two-story press box and concession stand.

DOANE SPORTS INFORMATIONThe Doane College Sports Information Offi ce is always interested in helping members of the media in their coverage of Tiger Athletics. Athlete features and interviews, credential request, photographs and statistics are available through the sports information offi ce.

Rick Schmuecker joined the Tiger team in August 2001 as Assistant Sports Information Director, following four years as a student at Midland Lutheran College. In May 2006, he was named head of the Sports Information Department by Athletic Director Greg Heier.

At Doane, Rick is seen at all home athletic events, usually in the designated media areas, either keep stats, broadcasting or both. He has received publication honors by the NAIA-SIDA in football and soccer as well as with the Doane athletic Web site. In June 2008, he received 2nd Place honors for the women’s soccer media guide, the highest honor received by himself or Doane through the NAIA-SIDA contests. In 2009, he received 2nd Place in CoSIDA’s Special Events publication for the volleyball post-season game program.

In Fall 2010, Dave Ziola became Assistant Sports Information Director. An assistant cross country and track & fi eld coach, Ziola will specialize in those two sports for the offi ce. He also teaches in the physical education department at Doane.

However, the work that is done could not be completely accomplished without several student workers who also help out with game days and offi ce work. These students are responsible for helping with statistics, running game clocks and setup for games. Their time and commitment is greatly appreciated.

Students working for the sports information offi ce in 2010-11 are: Kelly Baer, Cheryl Braithwait, Ashley Daily, Mindy Dymacek, Kelsie Grgurich, Veronica LeDuc, Jacy Ludwig, Jordan Ludwig, Brittany Luettel, Brittany Lurz, Morgan Dubas, Lisa Lord, Megan Meduna, Cassie Reicks, Brooke Sampson and Madara Upeneice.
