WELCOME TO THE 2016 RAC SYMPOSIUM

The Connected Customer

Each year retail marketers seek to increase their brand presence, promote their merchandise and create a differentiating customer experience. Throughout this journey they discover several segmentations of their customers who range from

the “drive-by shopper” to the “hyper connected consumer”. The latter group presents a unique opportunity for marketers to focus investment and attention as hyper connected consumers have great ability to become powerful brand advocates.

Defining a truly hyper connected customer goes beyond one way digital connectivity but rather, they actively participate in communicating both with their social community and with the retailer. They provide the retailer insight, feedback and advice on how to position offers tailor made for better consumption. They also help the retailer highlight promotions through social media channels and blogs. Most importantly, they often defend the retail banner when unfairly attacked online. These hyper connected consumers are more prominent within their social communities with their opinions, shared voices and digital device connectivity. To this end, retail marketers need to design programs around seeking out and supporting the hyper connected consumers.

At this year’s RAC Symposium, we have designed our day around the marketer’s efforts to building a connected base of consumers. Our speakers bring a diverse approach to building marketing programs centered on the connected customer. Our morning begins with one of Canada’s most influential CEOs, Michael Medline of Canadian Tire. His recent launch of an interactive printed catalog truly shows how physical and digital worlds come together to provide an exceptional brand experience. We will hear from Jeff Hoffman on his incredible journey from starting up Priceline, to making movies and traveling around the world speaking to global leaders. Our morning panel of three impactful senior retail marketers discuss and debate the merits of the connected customer. Finally our morning is capped off with a selection of interesting break-out speakers including topics of data analytic, social media and broadcast.

Our afternoon kicks off with Kerry Munro, VP Marketing at The Home Depot. Kerry’s experiences, knowledge and stage presence always draw a huge crowd. Our afternoon panel is certain to please as we have two separate research analysts presenting the advantages of print & digital. Finally, we finish off the afternoon with Drew Green, CEO of Indochino and how his strategy has launched an enormous growth trajectory.

To this, I say welcome and enjoy the many moments to share stories, learn new methods for marketing and visit our exhibitors area for great insight to what’s new in retail marketing.

Thank you all for coming,

Darrell Cook

Brisebois, President & CEO, Retail Council of Canada and Michael Medline will discuss the need for Canadian Tire to innovate, and how this innovation will continue as the consumer continues to evolve.

CLICKING INTO THE FUTUREOrion CD

Jeff Hoffman, Co-founder & Principal, ColorJar

Every night while we sleep, new products and technologies are launched in the world that we couldn’t even imagine the day before. Our customer is constantly being bombarded by prod-ucts and services that change the way we buy everything we buy. Add to that the layer of social media that permeates every buying decision and it’s clear that the next generation of custom-ers will need and expect to be treated in a completely different way than the customers before them. This presentation by internet pioneer Jeff Hoffman will provide an eye-opening look at the trends that are changing the way we live, the technologies changing the way we shop, and tips from the companies that are leading the way. Attendees will gain new tools and techniques that they can use in their own retail businesses.

TRADITIONAL MEDIA & THE DIGITAL CONSUMER Orion CD

Moderator: Jim Danahy, CEO, CustomerLAB

Panelists: Mark Baltazar, Vice President and Partner, Brandspark

Paul Street, Research Director, RealityMine

If you haven’t already noticed, the world of retail has changed. Consumers are engaging digitally with brands in a way that was never even imagined 10 years ago. Mobile engagement has fur-ther enhanced the reach of digital and retailers without strong digital cross-channel platforms are struggling to stay relevant. All of this has created speculation about the future of the news-paper industry in Canada. However, research suggests that a large percentage of Canadians are still reading and engaging with traditional print mediums. A new level of innovation has emerged, with retailers circling back to traditional print advertising tools to help them side-step digital clutter and re-connect with their customers. In this session, two sources of new research will discuss the future of traditional and digital engagement, the blend and mix that marketers can see coming, and what is next for the digital consumer.
