at the IBM and Concentrix Delivery Centre at Mt Albert campus

From our biggest campus in Mt Albert to the Northern campus in Albany, Unitec’s three campuses are all quite different. The Mt Albert campus is green and spacious, with lots of carparking, sports facilities and cafes to catch up with friends. It’s just 10 minutes drive to the city, and a short walk to the nearest bus stop and train station.

Out west, there’s Waitakere with its modern teaching facilities, right at the heart of Henderson. Our Northern campus in Albany is easy to reach from all parts of the North Shore and the northwest.

All our campuses are 100% smokefree and they’re constantly buzzing with students of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds. There’s always something going on too – from social events on campus to action-packed trips out of Auckland with the Experience NZ programme.

The year starts with the biggest student orientation event in the country and finishes with the massive End of Year Party, with concerts, film nights, gaming events, sporting events, BBQs, parties, comedy nights and Kids’ Days Out in between.

You can join one of the many clubs or societies at Unitec or even start your own one. And if you’re after some culture, there are regular plays and dance performances by performing arts students, as well as design and visual arts exhibitions at the Mt Albert campus galleries.

4 Welcome to New Zealand (Aotearoa)

A beautiful piece of paradise in the South Pacific, New Zealand is a country of contrasts. From tropical forests to white sand beaches and towering mountains to bubbling hot springs, the scenery is spectacular. Then there are New Zealand’s modern and vibrant cities bursting with world-class restaurants, galleries, theatres and museums.

You can ski, sail, hike, sky dive and mountain bike your way around the country. Or simply enjoy the relaxed lifestyle and clean air that Kiwis take for granted.

New Zealand is repeatedly voted one of the world’s most peaceful countries according to the Global Peace Index. With a population of 4.5 million people, New Zealand is really diverse. . The indigenous Māori people were the first inhabitants of Aotearoa and today New Zealanders come from all over the world, including the Pacific Islands, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe.

New Zealand welcomes everyone, practises all forms of religion, and enjoys political debate and freedom of speech. New Zealand was the first country in the world to give women the vote and we are proud to be nuclear free!

Living in Auckland (Tamaki Makau Rau)

The Māori name for Auckland is Tamaki Makau Rau, which means ‘city of many lovers’. And it’s true – we love Auckland and we’re sure you will too!

Some Auckland factsAuckland is New Zealand’s biggest city – around one third of the population lives here, about 1.4 million people. It’s also the largest Polynesian city in the world.

According to Mercer Quality of Living survey, Auckland is currently ranked as the third best city to live in the world!

Auckland’s major businesses include information and computer technology, biotechnology and the creative industries. Health, construction, viticulture and food manufacturing are also important.

Auckland is often called the city of sails because the harbour is full of hundreds of yachts. In fact, there are more yachts per person than in any other city in the world.

At 328 metres high, Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower is the tallest building in New Zealand.

Events in Auckland There’s never a dull moment in Auckland with events that range from wine and food to music and film, and of course international sports like rugby and cricket. For the full guide to what’s on, check out www.eventfinder.co.nz

Colin Fatuimoana LangilangiTongaBachelor of Applied Technology (Marine)

It was very important to me to learn from people with differing opinions, from people who had travelled and were from different parts of the world and this is one of the many reasons I chose to study marine technology at Unitec. Since being at Unitec, I have become totally independent and love to socialise and meet new people every day on and off campus. So far this has been the best experience of my life.

I was looking for a tertiary institution where classes are small and students have the opportunity to work one on one with their tutors, Unitec has definitely delivered and met my expectations. My tutors have been remarkable, I have been able to succeed in ever paper and have made many dear friends. I have taken this opportunity to immerse myself into the kiwi lifestyle and in doing so have seen and done some pretty memorable things.

Graduates of our communication studies programmes are highly sought after. Locally, nationally and internationally, businesses and organisations are seeking our graduates for their ability to

Ashley Grey Medical Radiation Technologist, Counties Manukau District Health Board, Radiology DepartmentBachelor of Health Science (Medical Imaging)

“I originally wanted to be a dancer, but injuries prevented this. The many x-rays, MRI scans, nuclear medicine scans and ultrasound scans I had along the way unlocked a new interest in radiology. The medical imaging programme at Unitec is a mixture of theory and practice. It’s hard work – you often spend your holidays in clinical placements - but the small classes allow you to build strong relationships with your classmates and tutors. A proud moment for me was receiving the Unitec Senior Scholar Award at graduation, which shows that hard work does pay off! My qualification is 100%

relevant to my job now. Having a clinical placement at Middlemore Hospital really helped me as I was exposed to working life as a radiographer from day one. I love that no day is ever the same. Radiation technologists work all over the hospital (general, emergency, superclinic, theatre, screening), and I really enjoy this fast-paced environment. I don’t know yet where my future will take me but there are so many opportunities with a medical imaging degree. I could do postgraduate study in mammography, ultrasound, MRI or nuclear medicine, or I could even travel abroad with my degree.”

I chose Unitec because of the hands on nature of the programme. I felt I would get more out of my education through a practical approach combined with a theoretical one. I have learned so much more than I thought I would in my classes, real world skills and a solid base for any future workplace. I would recommend studying in a foreign country since you learn about a new place, new people, and most of all about yourself. It’s a worthwhile, once in a lifetime experience!

My life has completely been put on the fast track after graduating from Unitec. Studying the Graduate Diploma has been an unforgettable experience, working late in the labs, the amazing lectures, attending the numerous events around campus. Every single minute was a total pleasure. There are many achievements I am proud of; the most important of all is now I can call myself a graduate. Thank you Unitec, for the life changing experience, that has turned my life into a successful one.

For hints and tips about putting portfolios together, please see http://www.unitec.ac.nz/future-students/enrolment/admission-requirements/portfolios/portfolios_home.cfm

Who can write my SOP?SOPs must be written by the student applying for the programme.

Can I copy the SOP or ask someone else to write it for me?No - it is very important that you write your own statement. Do not ask a friend, agent, or family member to do it for you, and please do not copy paragraphs from Unitec or other websites. We want to know why you want to study with us, and only you can tell us this.

Why do I have to write an SOP?Mainly to help Unitec understand why you are applying for the programme you selected, and whether it is likely to meet your needs. The SOP does not affect whether you meet the general entry requirements.

What do I need to include in my SOP?» Your name (and your Unitec ID number if you have it)» The Unitec programme you want to study (we

cannot proceed if your SOP is about another institution or a programme we do not offer)

» Your motivation for applying – in other words, › what interests you about this programme or area of study? › what do you hope to get out of your study?

» Some thoughts about your future plans - you could tell us about› further study you might be planning to do

after completing this programme› whether you want to work in NZ (or in

another country) afterwards› what kind of work you think you might like to do

Is there anything I should NOT put in my SOP?Please do NOT include the following:» Paragraphs or lists of courses from Unitec’s

website (or other websites promoting NZ)» Paragraphs copied from SOPs other students have written» You can mention your work experience if relevant,

but full details should go on your CV or resumé

How long does my SOP need to be?One page(about 3-4 paragraphs) is enough, if you give us the information we are asking for in these guidelines.
