New Teaching Pathways in DN200 Science for Entry 2013

If you're interested in Maths and Science andwould like to explore a career in teaching, UCDScience DN200 offers a new route to become apost-primary teacher in Maths and Science, start-ing in September 2013.

This five-year Teaching Council accredited degree leads to an MScin Mathematics and Science Education, where students will bequalified to teach one of the following subject combinations atsecond level:n Applied Mathematics and Mathematics to Leaving Certificaten Biology and Mathematics to Leaving Certificate

and Junior Certificate Sciencen Chemistry and Mathematics to Leaving Certificate

and Junior Certificate Sciencen Physics and Mathematics to Leaving Certificate

and Junior Certificate Science

These subjects are offered through our common entry DN200 Sci-ence course. This means you can explore your subject areas, alongwith some areas of education, in first and second year so that youwill be able to make a better-informed decision about pursuing ateaching pathway after second year.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Am I guaranteed a place in one of the education pathways? If not, howmany places are available at the end of second year in each educationpathway? All students are guaranteed their choice of subjects in both first and sec-ond year. In third year there are 42 places in total available in the educa-tion pathways and these places will be allocated on the basis of secondyear results. So, in third year, there are 12 places in Biology and Mathematics Education,12 places in Chemistry and Mathematics Education, 12 places in Physicsand Mathematics Education and 6 places in Applied Mathematics andMathematics Education.

2. If I don't get a place in an education pathway at the end of second yearcan I still become a secondary school teacher? If you do not get a place in an education pathway at the end of secondyear, you can still proceed to a four-year BSc degree specialising in yoursubject of choice. If you have taken care to complete modules in areas pre-scribed by the Teaching Council in your teaching subject of choice, thenyou can become a Post-Primary Teacher by completing the ProfessionalDiploma in Education (formerly the HDip). From September 2014, this willbecome a two-year programme.

3. Are there fees for the MSc?Yes. There are fees for the two-year MSc. Currently fees at the MSc levelare approximately €6,000 per year. As of 2014, if you want to train as ateacher after your bachelor’s degree, you will have to complete a two-yearProfessional Diploma in Education for which similar fees are expected.

4. Do I need to reach a certain grade after Year 3 to be eligible to pursuethe two years Masters or is it enough to just pass my exams? You need to achieve a degree Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.08.This isequivalent to a 2nd Class Honours degree (“a 2:1”). Currently entry to theProfessional Diploma in Education is very competitive and typically stu-dents have high 2.1 grades.

5. If I don't make the grade and have to graduate after three years, whattype of career opportunities will be open to me with a degree in Mathe-matics and Science? You will graduate with a Level 8 BSc degree and will be eligible to apply forjobs that require a third-level qualification. You will also be eligible to applyto a range of graduate programmes, depending on your final grade.

6. Does the Teaching Council recognise these degrees? Can I just apply forteaching jobs when I graduate with the MSc?This five-year programme is fully accredited by the Teaching Council of Ire-land. You are a qualified teacher on graduation from the five-year pro-gramme.

7. What about the existing one year PDE formerly HDip?The Professional Diploma in Education (formerly the HDip), will be a two-year programme from September 2014. If you graduate from our five-yearprogramme, you do not need to complete a Professional Diploma in Edu-cation.

8. Will I have to find my own school placement? Can I go back to my ownschool? No. We will find your school placement for you. There are two year-longschool placements in years four and five of the degree. It is not desirable tocomplete the school placement at your old school.
