PRONUNCIATIONS

HUSKIES DEBUT AT NELSON FIELD HOUSEAfter beginning the season with two road victories at Chestnut Hill and Wilmington (DE), the Huskies finally make their first appearance of the 2013-14 season at Nelson Field House.

SCOUTING MILLERSVILLEThe Marauders are the favorites in the PSAC East this season according to the preseason coaches’ poll which slotted Millersville first and Bloomsburg second. Like Bloomsburg, Millersville has a different look this year with just one senior and three juniors. Millersville went 21-8 last year and 16-6 in PSAC play, but lost three starters from that group including Aurielle Mosley and Mashira Newman who each rank among the school’s all-time top 10 in several categories. Redshirt junior guard Carly Gallagher is the Marauders’ leading returning scorer (10.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists) while Senada Mehmedovic (9.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists) is the only senior on the roster. If this year’s team is anything like previous editions under head coach Mary Fleig, it will likely find success – Millersville has reached the PSAC Tournament in 17 straight seasons.

THE BLOOMSBURG-MILLERSVILLE SERIESMillersville leads, 41-36Millersville has gotten the better of the series as of late, sweeping the season series last year. Bloomsburg’s last win over Millersville came on Feb. 25, 2012 at Nelson Field House in a 73-60 tri-umph. Since that day both rosters have completely changed, however – only two players on the cur-rent Bloomsburg roster (Catherine Noack, Brianna Dudeck) scored for the Huskies in that game while Carly Gallagher, who scored eight points in that game, is the only remaining player for the Marauders.

WHEN LAST WE METThe Marauders escaped Nelson Field House with a 64-62 win on Feb. 6 after erasing a 17-point halftime deficit. It was truly a tale of two halves – Millersville shot 33 percent in the first half but warmed to 50 percent in the second period while Bloomsburg flipped those numbers, shooting 50 percent before the break and 33 percent to finish. Mashira Newman had a double-double of 14 points and 11 boards for Millersville while Senada Mehmedovic added 12 and eight. Mehmedovic gave the Marauders the lead in the final minute with two shots at the line. Kayla Oxenrider led BU with 13 points and Catherine Noack chipped in six points.

NOT BAD FOR A DEBUTBloomsburg has opened its season firing on all cylinders, scoring convincing wins in both of its first two games – 97-57 at Chestnut Hill on Nov. 9 and 105-69 last Saturday at Wilmington (DE). The Huskies are shooting 50 percent from the field (72-of-144) while four players are averaging double fig-ure scoring – Catherine Noack (20.0 ppg), Nikki Tamanoski (16.0 ppg), Adreana Sadowski (11.0 ppg) and Morgan Klunk (11.0 ppg).

NOACK EARNS PSAC EAST ATHLETE OF THE WEEKCatherine Noack is the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week as announced by conference offi-cials Monday. Noack scored a career-high 25 points along with five assists and three rebounds in the Huskies’ 105-69 win at Wilmington (DE) this past Saturday. The senior guard finished with 9-of-14 shooting from the floor and was 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Including a season-opening victory at Chestnut Hill on Nov. 9, Noack averages 20.0 points through the first two contests along with 4.0 assists while shooting over 63 percent (14-22) from the floor and 53 percent (8-15) from the perim-eter.

AT THE POLLSBloomsburg received votes in the WBCA USA Today Sports Division II Preseason Coaches’ Top 25, garnering 22 votes in the poll. The Huskies were nationally-ranked for much of last season. Gannon is the only PSAC team ranked in the Top 25 (No. 2), but BU, California (PA), Edinboro and IUP all received votes.

HUSKY BITES• 2012-13 Record: 24-6 (17-5 PSAC)• 2012-13 PSAC East Finish: First• 2012-13 Home Record: 14-2• 2012-13 Away Record: 10-3• 2012-13 Neutral Record: 0-1• Starters Returning/Lost: 1/4• Letterwinners Returning/Lost: 11/5• Newcomers: 2• Roster Breakdown (Sr/Jr/So/Fr): 2/4/5/2

THEIR TIME NOWThough this year’s version of the Huskies has a much different look than past years, much of the roster remains the same from last year’s PSAC Championship squad. True, five players including four starters graduated off last year’s edition, but 11 players return from that team – five sopho-mores, four juniors and two seniors. Those returners have gotten a chance to shine in the early season – five have set new career highs in scoring during the first two games.

NO JITTERS HEREFreshman guard Morgan Klunk has hit the ground running in her first two collegiate games. Immediately joining the starting five, Klunk has scored 11 points in each of the opening games of the year. The Felton, PA native filled the stat sheet last Saturday with 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals at Wilmington.

CLEARY HITS MILESTONEBloomsburg head coach Bill Cleary begins his sixth season at the helm of the Huskies and as he begins the new year he has already surpassed a career milestone Cleary scored his 100th win with the Huskies in the season-opener at Chestnut Hill and owns a 101-45 record at BU. In all, Cleary owns a 157-130 career coaching record. He is the third coach in Bloomsburg women’s basketball history to win 100 games with the Huskies – Joe Bressi went 175-47 between 1986-94 and Monica Starrett compiled a 137-65 mark between 1997-2004.

HUSKIES PICKED SECOND IN PSAC EAST POLLThe Huskies were picked to finish second in the PSAC East Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Millersville landed the top spot in the poll while Shippensburg was third, West Chester fourth and Kutztown fifth. East Stroudsburg, Lock Haven, Mansfield and Cheyney rounded out the poll. Though sec-ond, the Huskies claimed the most first-place votes in the poll – three – ahead of Millersville, Shippensburg and Kutztown which all took two first-place votes apiece in a voting reflective of the potential wide open nature of the East Division this season.

NOACK PICKED TO PRESEASON ALL-EAST TEAMSenior guard Catherine Noack received recognition from the coaches of the PSAC East by earning a selection to the preseason All-PSAC East Team. Noack, the lone returning starter from last year’s team, averaged 10.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists as a junior last year. After scoring in double figures just once in the first nine games last year, she then tallied double figure scoring in 15 of her last 21 games. Noack now ranks fifth in school history with 161 3-pointers.

BEST OF THE BESTOver the past three seasons, the Huskies posted a 72-18 (.800) record, a mark that ranks in the top 15 nationally in Division II and is the second-most victories by any PSAC team during the span. Only Edinboro has won more games from the PSAC since the start of 2010 (78). Of the East Division teams, Millersville was the closest to Bloomsburg, entering the year with 59 victories in the past three campaigns.

UP NEXTThe Huskies continue PSAC East play with a road trip to Lock Haven on Saturday. Lock Haven has started the season 1-2, defeating Wilmington (82-74) before dropping back-to-back games vs. NYIT (91-86) and Goldey-Beacom (50-47) at the Shippensburg Tournament this past weekend.
