ABOUT BLOOMSBURG

Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.

Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 200 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.

The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK

Each new season marks a turning of the page with every year’s roster bringing different characteristics regardless of the number of returning players. For the Bloomsburg University women’s lacrosse team, the 2014 season brings a few extra changes in the form of a host of new faces on the field with the arrival of 11 freshmen.

The Huskies graduated half of their starting lineup from a team which went 10-8 overall and 7-4 in PSAC play, reaching the second round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs. As the new season begins, second-year head coach Mallory Poole is searching for combinations that click and are able to build off last year’s strong finish.

“One of the elements that we will need to manage is be-ing flexible in moving people around; having diversity in where we play people on the field is critical this year,” Poole said. “I definitely think the versatility of that young group is going to allow us to be creative in what we do in terms of lineups.”

One thing that the amount of newcomers brings the Hus-kies is a sense of unpredictability.

“Because we’re so young I think we’re going to be a relatively unpredictable team,” Poole said. “Where I anticipate will take teams by surprise is with all of these newcomers. Our opponents haven’t been able to see them or able to scout them. Nobody knows who Blooms-burg is right now.

“There’s something unique about the idea of not know-ing what we’re going to get from them,” she added of the

freshman class. “They have nothing to lose and every-thing to gain. There’s no history for them, so there’s an opportunity for them to define themselves this year. We have some high expectations and will rely on this group to make an immediate impact.”

Bloomsburg will get a sense of where it is right away, opening the season at defending national champion LIU Post on March 1.

“We have another tough schedule. We’re excited to start with LIU Post; that will be a good benchmark for us,” Poole added. “It will give us a sense of where we are rela-tive to where we want to be. We hope it sets the tone for what we want to accomplish for the rest of the season. We go right from that game into another tough opponent in Mercy and a tough game on the road at Pfeiffer. The early competition will gauge where we are when we begin conference play.”

Here’s how the 2014 Huskies roster looks:

ATTACKAll-PSAC selection Julie Falk leads the Huskies attack again this season after posting 47 goals and 14 assists last season. A former PSAC Freshman of the Year and an All-PSAC Second Team pick a year ago, Falk already ranks among the BU all-time leaders in points with 158 enter-ing her junior season.

“It’s great for us that we have a returner like Julie,” Poole said. “She’s been a major player in our attack since she’s joined the team.”

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK

Partnering with Falk at the head of the attack is junior Marisa Moley who tallied 22 goals and 17 assists last year. “Moley was peaking at the end of the year, which is what you always want players to do,” Poole said. “She’s started this preseason where she left off and she is continuing to expand on her game.”

Junior Patrice Coleman registered 13 goals a year ago and will be another featured member of the Huskies attack. Senior captain Ashley Bossert also returns after finishing last year with 14 goals. “She has a bit of a quiet role on the attack, but she is someone who will get into the fold on a consistent basis,” Poole said.

Freshmen Brigid Kyne and Nikki Fisher could step up into bigger roles at the start of the year. Another peppering of freshmen will look to get touches on the attack as well including Kellen Cannon and Courtney Burke.

MIDFIELDThe Huskies will need to replace three graduated starters from the midfield this year and will heavily rely on a trio of juniors returning to bring leadership.

Morgan Sherriff has appeared in 34 games over the past two years, scoring nine times last season. Also back is Al-lison Campbell who appeared in 17 games with 16 starts a year ago with 18 ground ball pickups and a pair of draw controls. Able to play both midfield and defense, Carly Ball also returns after being named to the PSAC third team a year ago. Joining the returners is freshman Ashley Nelson.

“We are going to look to a variety of faces to help us out in the midfield this season. I am challenging several of our returners to step up into more dynamic roles than what we have relied on them in past seasons. Coupled with the addition of several freshmen, we will be able to work some different combinations into the lineup throughout the year.”

DEFENSEBloomsburg will look to senior captain Aubrey Bossert to anchor the defense. A two-time PSAC Champion Scholar, Bossert was a star on and off the field, also named to the PSAC first team after starting all 18 games with 46 draw controls.

The Huskies will also work in looks from junior Shannon

Neligan and are excited about freshmen Kate Shea and Ju-lia Stauffer. Another newcomer, Christine Seitzinger may play a dual role between defense as well as potentially see time in the cage as well.

A large hole was left in the cage following the graduation of Sara Bates last year. A first team All-PSAC pick with 123 saves last year, Bates is working as a volunteer assis-tant coach working with goalkeepers this year.

Taking over as the starting goalie is freshman Abbey Bur-nett, who has impressed Poole since joining the program. “Abbey is seamlessly filling that void,” Poole said. “She’s steady and has great technique, but more importantly she has the command and respect of the defense. To have that as a freshman is pretty telling.”

SEASON OUTLOOKReceiving votes in the preseason Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, the Huskies have a lot of company in earning attention from the national polls. Bloomsburg will play five pre-season nationally-ranked opponents this year, with three of those teams coming from the PSAC as well as two oth-ers receiving votes along with the Huskies.

“Without question West Chester traditionally rosters a tough team,” Poole said of the defending PSAC cham-pions. “Lock Haven is predicted to have another really successful year. Mercyhurst has been recruiting some great athletes. IUP is coming off a solid season as well as Millersville.”

With so many new faces, Poole hopes that translates into constant improvement throughout the year.

“I am impressed with the overall development and im-provement of this group since our start together. The integration of our newcomers in addition to the growth in maturity of our returners from both a positional and leadership standpoint has been tremendous. I expect that we will continue to improve on our game play and look to be at our best come May.”
