The newly-renovated softball field hosted its first game in March of 2008. Improvements to the field include a climate-controlled press box that includes a concession stand, and a new scoreboard behind the left field fence. A warning track and new sound system were also installed. The stadium has lights that were just recently installed in the summer of 2009, and the dugouts include storage areas for bats, gloves and batting helmets.

The Millersville University Softball Field has hosted Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) District 3 Tournament games since 2009 and was selected as the 2009 Keystone Athletic Field Managers Organization (KAFMO) Field of Distinction for its safety, appearance, and playability.

Completing her 19th season as the skipper of the Marauders, coach Kathy Cummings took a young team to the brink of the 2012 PSAC Tournament. While the team finished 18-30, Millersville was 6-10 in the PSAC East, in the playoff race until the final game of the season. Cummings did a fine coaching job, handling a roster of eight freshman out of 14 players. The squad competed well against top competition, losing by a run twice to nationally-ranked Kutztown.

She earned her 300th win in the 2011 season with a 3-1 victory over West Chester on March 30. Cummings finished her 18th season with several players earning conference accolades. Four of her players earned All-PSAC First Team selections and one earned All-PSAC Second Team. The most first team selections Millersville has ever had in a season.Cummings took a young squad to the brink of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs in 2010.

Millersville showed it could play with nationally ranked teams and PSAC powers during the 2010 season. The Marauders played a number of tightly contested games with perennial Eastern Division favorites Kutztown and West Chester. The Black and Gold also went toe-to-toe with teams such as Lock Haven, winners of four of the last five PSAC Championships, and Indiana (Pa.).

The Marauders finished with a 23-24 record, highlighted by a 9-6 season-ending win over West Chester on Senior Day. Millersville dropped four one-run games against ranked opponents, but did see a three-game improvement in conference play from 2009.

Cummings had a number of players earn regonition in 2010. Kelly Fitzgerald was an All-PSAC East First Team selec-tion at catcher and a Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II All-Atlantic Region Second Team pick. Shortstop Lindsay Hosier was named to the All-PSAC East Second Team. In addition, Fitzgerald, Hosier, Alicia Hughes, and Sarah Signore all garnered PSAC weekly honors under Cummings’ tutelage.

The 2009 season was one of ups and downs for Cummings’ squad. The Marauders were slow out of the gate, but tore through a 17-game stretch from March 9-22, going 14-3. Conference play proved to be a tough road to navigate, but Cummings still managed to lead Millersville to its fourth straight 20-win season. The 24 wins by the 2009 squad were the second most in program history, bested only by the 2006 squad, which won 30 games.

Cummings earned her 250th win as Millersville skipper in a 4-1 doubleheader-opening victory over the University of Sciences in Philadelphia on Mar. 14, 2009.

In 2008, “KC” directed the Marauders to a 20-27 record. MU began the season 6-0 —its best start in 12 years— and set a school record for runs scored in a doubleheader with 78 against Lincoln. The Marauders also snapped West Chester’s school-record 16-game winning streak with a come-from-behind 10-5 win in extra innings.

The 2007 season also saw Cummings’ crew reach the 20-win plateau. The Marauders did so by remarkably ending Kutztown’s 22-game winning streak with a dramatic 4-3 victory in their final game of the season.

In her 19 seasons leading the softball team Cummings has compiled a 323-452-1 record. She enjoyed exceptional success as the Marauders’ field hockey head coach from 1993-96, amassing a 47-27-1 record in her four seasons at the helm. KC was a two-year varsity letterwinner in softball at Missouri State University, from which she gradu-ated in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She also served as an assistant coach for the Lady Bear softball team in 1991.

The Foxboro, Mass., native received her master’s degree in physical education, with a teaching and coaching empha-sis, at Ohio University in 1993. She served as the Lady Bobcats’ field hockey assistant in 1991 and 1992.

Jill Golomboski finished her first season as assistant coach of the Marauders in 2012. She helped Coach Cummings lead a freshman-based team to 18 wins and six in the PSAC East, right on the brink of the playoffs.

Golomboski joined the Marauder coaching staff for the 2012 season as an assistant coach while seeking a Master’s of Education degree in Sports Management at Millersville. Golomboski had previously coached at Franklin & Marshall College after her playing career as a Marauder.

Golomboski graduated with an economics degree in 2010 after a four-year career in Black & Gold. A stellar outfielder, she never registered a fielding percentage lower than .900 in any of her four seasons. As a left fielder, she started 187 of 188 games played and drove in 47 runs with one home run. Her batting average of .303 during her junior year was the highest of her career.

A year after just missing out on the PSAC Tournament with a defeat on the final day, an overhauled roster and new talent bring hope to the Millersville softball team. Exactly half (eight) of the team’s 16 players on this year’s roster are newcomers, either freshmen or transfer players. As head coach Kathy Cummings enters her 20th season with her team projected again for a fourth-place finish in the PSAC East, she knows this team can be so much more: compete in the division and climb the ladder to compete for postseason play for the first time since 2006. “We are in a great position this year with a young but extremely talented team,” Cummings said. “Several players can play more than one position confidently, so it gives us flexibility to move things around when needed.” That versatility will be important to a team with a short bench, so players that can slide around the diamond are critical to this team’s success in 2013. One of the other areas crucial to these Marauders will be the execution on the field. Sound practice is a must, but the execution during a full seven frames is what will truly win Millersville games against a tough PSAC East division. Among such a young roster, the longtime Marauder head coach knows the team will also have to play with the confidence that it believes it can win every time out on the field. “We simply have to play the way we have practiced during the offseason and preseason,” said Cummings. “If this team can execute at the level we have been practicing and have the confidence necessary to succeed at this level, we should be able to make some great things happen out there on the field.” While the short-term goal for “KC” and her team is to get better every day, the long-term goal for this team is snapping the team’s six year postseason drought. Millersville’s end goal is to make noise in the PSAC East and to reach the PSAC Tournament for the first time under Cummings. “As in every year, the ultimate goal is to make it to postseason play and give ourselves the opportunity to compete for a championship.” The lack of any senior players on this year’s roster could have most coaches worried about their teams, but it is instead something that Cummings knows can work to this team’s advantage in the long run. The goal is to win now with this year’s team, but that doesn’t stop “KC” from looking toward what she sees as a very bright future for this team in future years as well as this one. “The better this year is, especially with a young team,” said Cummings, “It will help this group realize how much the sky is the limit for the future of this program. We know that actions speak louder than words and understand that we have to prove it on the field, day in and day out.” INFIELD This is a position of strength and continuity for the team, as three of four starters

return from last year: first baseman Ashley Cantiello, second baseman Danielle DiFilippo and third baseman Jamie Motsko. A year ago, that trio combined for 28 RBI and 22 runs scored while starting a total of 115 games. More important than what the returners do at the plate is their capabilities in the field; as a threesome, they committed just 25 errors in 638 chances. An experienced group with continuity is also encouraging to Cummings. Millersville’s head coach can also be assured that when she does have to go to the bench or fill in the shortstop spot, she knows her team’s play in the field won’t suffer a drop off in what the second unit or fourth member of the infield provide. “We have a great mix of returning players that make up the majority of our infield, but our new players that will be starting and filling in when necessary also have the talent and ability to keep our infield defense solid,” Cummings said. “Motsko, DiFilippo and Cantiello were all regular starters for us last year and work extremely well together. “Jordan Sheffield (freshman) will step in mostly in the middle infield and has shown she is a great fit to the already cohesive infield unit. Yisleidy Minaya-Vargas (sophomore) will also give us some solid innings at second base and in the outfield,” said Cummings. OUTFIELD While this group as a whole is relatively inexperienced, the group is anchored by junior captain Taylor Odell-Smith, a fixture in the outfield over the past two seasons who has started 80 of the 85 games in which she has appeared. Last year as a sophomore, Odell-Smith proved that she has some pop in her bat, slugging .365 with two triples and three longballs. The slugging percentage was third-best on the team. Another returner that could come into play is sophomore Steph Kulp, who played some outfield and pitched last season, appearing in a total of 28 games (18 in the field). Newcom-ers in the mix for the corner outfield slots are junior Ginely Ortiz-Marrero and freshmen Brit-tany Shoemaker and Moira Golden. Cummings has every reason to believe that a relatively inexperienced group can get the job done in 2013. “Odell-Smith can play all three outfield positions and is a strong leader as well as an excellent example for our younger players,” said Cummings. “We have the utmost confidence in all of our players that will be covering the outfield positions and know they will always go all out to be that last wall of defense and help us win big games. “Kulp is returning after doing a great job on the mound and in the outfield in 2012. Ortiz-Marrero, Shoemaker and Golden will round out our outfield group. They all have the qualities and abilities that will help us to succeed as a team.” PITCHERS While the team lost its best pitcher from a year ago in Alicia Hughes, Cummings feels that

returning sophomore Sarah Bertoni plus her newcomers give her the luxury of having the best staff she’s ever had while at Millersville. Bertoni fired a no-hitter in her rookie campaign and turned in the most innings pitched in a season in Marauder history. Bertoni is backed by other returners who saw action on the mound last year in Cantiello and Kulp. Despite just five appearances, Cantiello had the second-best ERA on the team a season ago at 3.44. Kulp made 10 appearances, all calls from the bullpen, and pitched a total of 18.1 innings. “KC” has also brought in freshmen Brianna Andraos and Amanda Wink, both of whom are expected to step in and contribute to the rotation immediately. “This staff gives us the strongest pitching staff we have ever had here,” Cummings said. “We have five pitchers that could give us solid starts on any given day. Bertoni had an excel-lent first year and will continue to gain strength and confidence with a year as a starter under her belt. Cantiello and Kulp also gave us some very solid innings on the mound last year and both are expected to do even more this year. “Andraos and Wink bring with them a background of outstanding success throughout their high school and travel ball careers and will no doubt bring that success with them to this level,” Cummings continued. “The group we have at this position gives us excellent depth and we will be able to switch things up or make changes to put our team in a great position whenever the situation calls for it.” CATCHERS Another position of great depth and experience from a year ago, catcher is one of the strongest and deepest positions on the team. Right behind the plate, sophomore Gabbie Berry started all 48 games in which she appeared last season, tying for the team lead in hom-ers and leading the team with 20 RBI. Her .352 slugging percentage was fourth-best on last year’s team and another year of experience figures to make her even better. Sophomore Gab Ceritano also returns, and grabbed the one start Berry did not make last season, appearing in 11 games. Even with Berry already in the fold, this position will truly test the versatility Cummings talked about and her ability to move players into positions to succeed. The most accomplished newcomer yet is sophomore Cara Nance, who transferred in from Bowie State after a rookie year during which she batted .419 en route to landing the CIAA Player of the Year award, an All-CIAA First Team nod and an All-CIAA Rookie Team selection. To find playing time for Nance with Berry entrenched in the lineup will be Cummings’ biggest challenge yet.

“We have our starting catcher, Berry, back behind the plate, but also have two other excellent options with Ceritano and Nance,” Cummings explained. “This will allow us to make other fielding moves without any hesitation. All three catchers have the experience and abilities to help make our pitching staff successful and also to put our team in the best situation to win.” BENCH Juggling lineups and figuring out the best combinations to win will be a challenge to Cummings, but one that she welcomes with open arms. That ability to make moves means that she has depth and a lineup versatile enough that any player can start, and any player can come off the bench to make an impact on any given day. “We are solid all-around, and all of our players have the potential to step in at any time and do their jobs successfully,” said Cummings. “We have a philosophy in which any player that is called upon to start or fill in is ready to do so and no one should ever know the dif-ference. I believe we have the personnel to do just that.” SCHEDULE The Marauders have already started their season at 1-1, dropping their first game of the season to Glenville State, 3-1, before beating up on Shepherd, hanging a 13-1 score on the Rams. Those games were at the season-opening Shaw Invitational Tournament, and three other games were to follow before being cancelled due to weather. For now, Millers-ville will have to get used to the road. Until March 24, the team has just two home games in a doubleheader against Seton Hill on March 13 versus 13 road games in that same span. After that initial road swing, the schedule remains a rollercoaster. The team then plays 10 of its next 12 at home, with six of those games against PSAC East foes. After that stretch, Millersville plays just six of its final 17 games at home, but four of the final six are at the friendly confines of the Millersville Softball Field, with the season finale as a pair of games against West Chester to end the regular season on Apr. 27.
