The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team welcomes threeschools to La Grande for the sixth annual Aramark Holiday Classic.

The yearly event that began in 2004 is a showcase some of the area’s finestwomen’s basketball programs at the small college level. This year TheCollege of Idaho, Montana Western, and Walla Walla University come toQuinn Coliseum.

The College of Idaho is making its fifth appearance at the classic. The Yotesentered the 2010-11 season with high expectations. C of I began the seasonas the preseason favorite for the Cascade Collegiate Conference title and aNo. 19 national ranking in NAIA Div. 2.

The Lady Yotes are led by Cascade Collegiate Conference PreseasonPlayer of the Year, Nicole Gall. The senior has lived up to the hype so farthis year. She enters the weekend leading the team in points per game(19.0), rebounds per game (6.25), assists per game (4.75), and blocks pergame (2.75). The 5-10 guard averaged 17.9 points per game last seasonand was named to the All-Conference team.

Head Coach Reagan Rossi was named CCC Coach of the Year after leading the C of I to the NAIA National Tournament and aconference title. It’s been a tough start for the Yotes in 2010-11. The College of Idaho comes to the classic with a 2-2 recordand a difficult schedule to open the season. All four of the Yotes’ first games have been against NAIA Div. 1 FrontierConference opponents.

C of I opened with an 88-70 win at the University of Great Falls in Montana. The Yotes then traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah fora tournament at Westminster College. An opening 79-69 loss to Carroll College and then a 78-56 loss to the host,Westminster, put The College of Idaho at 1-2. The Yotes would close the tournament with a 72-62 win over Montana Western.

Montana Western and The College of Idaho will meet again Saturday in La Grande. The Nov. 13 decision for the Yotes markedonly the third time C of I has knocked off Western in the 15 meetings all-time between the programs.

The Bulldogs come to La Grande with a 2-3 record, but have exhibited very unselfish play averaging 22 assists per game.Laura Geis leads UMW with an average of 12 points per game, shooting 66 percent from the field. Chloe Mosey leadsWestern on the boards averaging 7.4 rebounds a game. Nicole Tams enters the classic averaging 4.6 assists and 2.2 stealsper game.

Western opened the season with a 72-61 loss at home to Minot State. The Bulldogs rebounded with back-to-back wins overDickinson State and Pacific Union. Both wins were by wide margins. UMW slides into La Grande on a two-game losing streakafter losses to California Baptist and The College of Idaho in Salt Lake City.

Montana Western boasts the best record of any school in the history of the Aramark Holiday Classic. The Bulldogs are makingtheir fourth appearance at the classic and have gone 5-1 in their gamesduring the tournament. UMW had a five-game winning streak in the classicuntil Eastern Oregon beat them in 2008, 65-60.

Walla Walla University returns to the classic for only the second time afterbeing one of the four teams in the inaugural classic in 2004. The Wolveswere actually Walla Walla College at the time of the 2004 tournament; ithas since expanded to a University.

WWU enters the weekend 1-5 overall after a 62-23 loss at Warner PacificCollege. The Wolves opened the season with an 89-44 loss at home toMontana Tech. Three straight losses on the road would follow to EasternOregon, Lewis-Clark State, and Northwest University. Walla Walla thenwon a 58-53 decision over the Northwest Indian College on the road.

Nicke Parks, a native of Joseph, Ore. native, leads the Wolves averaging14.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game. Parks transferred toWWU after playing last season at NCAA Div. 1 Weber State University inOgden, Utah. Sierra King averages a team-high 2.5 assists per game.

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women’s bas-ketball team tips off its 2010-11 regular season Saturday in QuinnColiseum against Montana Tech.

The Mountaineers return to the court this season after achievingtheir seventh 20-win season in the past 10 years last season. Headcoach Anji Weissenfluh cracked the 200-win plateau last year. Afterbeing picked fifth in the Cascade Collegiate Conference preseasonpoll, EOU finished the season in its fifth national tournament berthin the last seven seasons.

It was the Mountaineers’ ninth straight winning season, and sev-enth straight season that featured a home postseason game.Eastern was four points shy of its seventh Cascade CollegiateConference title in the past 10 years, after falling at The College ofIdaho in the conference championship game.

This season, Eastern Oregon begins the year as the conference’sfourth place team. The league coaches slotted the Mountaineers inthe fourth position in the CCC preseason poll. Weissenfluh, now inher 11th season, will lead a group of experienced players and anexcellent incoming class into the 2010-11 season.

Back Court

If theirs is one thing that Eastern has a lot of … its guards. TheMountaineers have 10 of its 14 players on the roster listed asguards. Weissenfluh is stressing speed and consistency withEastern Oregon this season. Fans can expect a frenetic pace ofplay, up-and-down the court, with shots coming early in the shotclock and often.

The Mountaineers have 10 players under 5-10 and the team hasan average height of 5-8. So, speed and quickness on the courtwill be a necessity for Eastern in 2010-11. EOU shot _ times in itsannual Alumni game last week, and made _. The Mountaineersmade _ three pointers in the game.

Kyle Miller was named to the All-Conference preseason team afteraveraging 9.2 points per game and shooting 40 percent from thefield last season. The 5-7 junior, is one of five players that sawplenty of minutes in 2009-10.

Samantha Flett provided six points and four rebounds an outinglast year. The Wellpinit, Wash. native is one of three seniors on theroster. She averaged 23.4 minutes per game in 2009-10. Fellowsenior, Alyssa Garro, started in 18 of the 23 games a year ago, andproduced 5.3 points per game. Shaylee Nielsen will also be playingin her senior season this year. The 5-6 Delta, Utah native shot 42percent from the floor and made 41 three-pointers last season.Colby Patton also returns for the Mountaineers. The 5-8 sopho-more appeared in 14 games last year.

Kelsea Hurliman had a breakout year as a freshman in 2009-10.The now sophomore from Cloverdale, Ore. shot a conference best46 percent from behind the perimeter last season. In one of thebest first year’s any freshman has ever had at EOU, she made 40of her 87 three-point attempts. As a team the Mountaineers werefirst in the league in three-point percentage, and second in fieldgoal percentage.

Eastern was 12th in the country from behind the arc with its per-centage, and 14th in the NAIA in three-point percentage on thedefensive side of the ball as well. The Mountaineers held offensesto 28 percent from behind the arc. EOU was 16-1 last year when ithad a better field goal percentage than its opponent. Eastern wasatop the CCC in scoring defense giving up an average of 56.6points per game, which was also eighth-best in the NAIA.

son after a stellar career at powerhouse, Southridge High School inBeaverton, Ore. The 5-7 freshman, was named Class 6A first teamall-state last year. She helped Southridge overcome a 10-pointhalftime deficit with a team-high 11 points in the state champi-onship game victory over Jesuit.

Nicole Redd and Jessica Kramer were best friends on and off ofthe court at Lewiston High School, and are now bringing their 1-2punch to Eastern. The Lewiston, Idaho duo helped lead theBengals to the Idaho Class 5A state championships game last sea-son. Kramer scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds in thestate final, while Redd finished with 13 points.

Front Court

The Mountaineers will have to replace All-Conference selections,Ashlee Michelson and Tana Stickney, this season. Stickney wasEastern’s leading scorer and rebounder a year ago averaging11.93 points and 6.18 rebounds per game.

Rosebud Guthrie returns as the only current Mountaineer who sawminutes in the paint last season. The 6-0 sophomore appeared in20 games in 2009-10, averaging 2.3 points and rebounding pergame, while shooting 41 percent from the field.

Vintea Georges will have an immediate impact for EOU this sea-son. The 5-9 junior transfer from Delta Junior College comes to LaGrande after helping lead Delta to the CCCAA Northern Regionalfinals. Delta finished 20-7 overall and second in the Big 8Conference in 2009-10.

Spokane, Wash. native, Nyesha Joseph, makes her debut atEastern this season. The 5-10 freshman forward played her highschool career at University High School. Stevie Isaac will also seeminutes this season for the Mountaineers. Isaac, the tallest playeron the roster at 6-3, transfers to EOU after playing at CentraliaCommunity College.

Eastern was first in the conference in rebounding defense a yearago, and 15th in the NAIA in total rebound margin. TheMountaineers averaged 6.5 more rebounds than their opponents ingames last season.

Schedule

The Cascade Collegiate Conference looks to be as tough as it hasbeen in league play the past few years. Nicole Gall returns to TheCollege of Idaho for her senior season and helped put the Yotesatop the conference preseason poll. She was also named the pre-season league player of the year. C of I is looking to advance tothe NAIA Tournament for a third consecutive season.

Southern Oregon is expected to be led by senior guard WhitneyScott, who returns to the Raiders’ lineup after missing last seasonwith an injury. Two years ago, Scott was a first team All-CCCchoice after averaging 13.1 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

Corban, one of the CCC’s hottest teams down the stretch last sea-son, returns its top five scorers and top four rebounders from ayear ago, including junior forward Katie Steigleman who averaged16.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Warner Pacific and Concordia each made appearances in theNAIA Top 25 last season and should battle for the top half of theconference. Oregon Tech met EOU in the conference quarterfinalsin 2009-10 and will try to make another trip to the postseason thisyear. Northwest, Evergreen State, and Northwest Christian roundout a very difficult conference schedule.
