The 12th annual Aramark Quinn Classic returns this weekend to La Grande and QuinnColiseum. The yearly collegiate men’s basketball two-day showcase feature four teamsand four games.
This year the Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team welcomes The Collegeof Idaho, Montana Tech, and Walla Walla University. The classic provides a perfectwarm-up for the teams involved, as the games are always non-conference affairs early inthe season.
The 2010 edition features all returning teams to the showcase. Tech and The College ofIdaho each make their sixth appearances in the classic and Walla Walla returns for thesecond straight year.
Walla Walla returns seven players from a team that went 9-16 a year ago. The Wolveswon a pair of games against Cascade Collegiate Conference foe, Northwest ChristianUniversity. Tristan Greenidge returns as the top scorer from last season. The 6-2 sopho-more averaged 8.57 points and five rebounds a game in 2009-10. WWU lost its top fivescorers from last year’s team. Walla Walla finished third at the NAIA Div. 2 IndependentsTournament in 2009-10 in Colorado.
The Wolves welcome eight new players and a new co-head coach, Jim Hill. Co-headcoaches Gerry Larson and Hill found players in California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. Walla Walla is playing its firstgames of the season and will play games in Idaho, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, California, and Arizona this year. WWUplays opponents from the NCCAA, NAIA Div. 1, NAIA Div. 2, and NCAA Div. 2.
Montana Tech opened the 2010-11 season last Saturday with a 91-79 loss in Butte, Mont. to Dickinson State. After taking a4-0 lead in the opening minutes, Tech would trail for the remainder of the game. At halftime Dickinson State held a 43-34advantage. The Orediggers made some scoring runs after falling behind 60-40 five minutes into the second half. The teampulled within 11 points at the nine-minute mark.
The Orediggers had a nice offensive game from Hasquet with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. The senior was perfect ineight tries at the free-throw line. Newcomer Tyree Haynie was particularly effective driving the ball as he came off of thebench to score 19 points. Tech’s new head coach, Aaron Woliczko welcomes back eight players from a team that went 11-20 in 2009-10. Woliczko was an assistant basketball coach at NCAA Div. I University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif.
Tech finished 4-10 in Frontier Conference play last season, which placed them seventh in the league standings. DirkAnderson returns for his senior season after averaging 10.29 points and 6.1 rebounds a game last year. The Idaho City,Idaho native scored 11 points in the loss to Dickinson State. The Frontier Conference begins the year with two rankedteams, No. 12 Westminster and No. 25 Montana State-Northern. Rocky Mountain is receiving votes. Montana Western is offto a 4-0 start.
The College of Idaho began the season being picked fourth in the Cascade Collegiate Conference preseason coaches’ poll.The ‘Yotes opened 2010-11 with a pair of losses at a tournament hosted by Montana Western. C of I fell in the first game toWestern, 84-47, and dropped a heartbreaker in overtime to Carroll College, 72-66. First year head coach Rod Jensen leadsThe College of Idaho into the Quinn Classic where the ‘Yotes have a 7-3 record.
Jensen coached at Boise State University from 1983-2002, including the final seven seasons as the Broncos head coach,compiling a 109-93 overall record – including the Big West East Division regular-season championship in 1999. Followinghis time at BSU, Jensen spent two seasons as an assistant under Pete Gillen at the University of Virginia, helping theCavaliers to a pair of NIT appearances, and has spent the last five seasons at UNCG – working under head coach, MikeDement.
College of Idaho went 10-16 overall last year and finished eighth in theconference with a record of 6-12 in league play. Matt Ballenger leads agroup of nine returners, including a pair of starters. Ballenger, a preseasonAll-CCC team member, scored six points in the opening game withMontana Western and 20 points against Carroll. Miguel Rodriguez had 11assists in the games, and Krispin Banks grabbed 11 rebounds.
Last year, Montana Western won both of its games at the Quinn Classic, a77-61 win over Eastern Oregon, and a 99-74 victory over Walla Walla.WWU won a thrilling opening tournament game, 78-76. EOU won the finalgame over Montana Tech, 69-42. JaRon Brown of Montana Western wasthe tournament MVP, and the other members of the All-Tournament teamwere Eastern’s Jordan Gregg, Walla Walla’s Mark Moore, Layne Glaus ofWestern, and Tech’s Dean Colbray. None of those players return in 2010.

2010-11 EOU Men’s Basketball Season PreviewBarrett Henderson, EOU Assistant Athletic Director
The Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team returns tothe court after making their third straight trip to the national sweet16. EOU welcomes one of the finest recruiting classes in theschool’s history this year. Isaac Williams begins his second year asEastern’s head coach after leading EOU to its fourth consecutive20-win season in 2009-10.
Eastern finished one game behind Oregon Tech for the CascadeCollegiate Conference title a year ago. EOU finished the season atNo. 13 in the NAIA Div. 2 Top 25, and hosted a postseason gamefor the third straight season. The Mountaineers fell to WarnerPacific in the conference tournament semifinals, but advanced tothe semifinals for the fourth consecutive season.
EOU met Davenport (Mich.) in the first round of the NAIA Div. 2National Tournament in Point Lookout, and after trailing by doubledigits in the second half, the Mountaineers rallied for the openinground win. The nation’s third-ranked team, Indiana Wesleyan,struggled in the first half with Eastern Oregon. EOU led theWildcats at halftime, but were overcome in the second half andended the season, 23-9.
Back Court
Eastern Oregon returns only four players, three at the guard posi-tion, from last season’s 12-man roster. Thomas McCarthy is one ofthree seniors in this year’s lineup. The 6-0, 170-pound, shootingguard comes back for his final year at EOU after averaging 8.5points and 4.7 rebounds a game last season. The Prineville, Ore.native, will be looked at to provide an outside threat for theMountaineers after shooting 37 percent from the field in 2009-10.
Josh Cottle and Cody Thurmond will carry the point guard respon-sibilities for Eastern this season. Cottle lead the team last year with4.3 assists per game, while adding 7.7 points per game. The HeberCity, Utah native came to Eastern Oregon last year by way ofNCAA Div. 1’s Weber State University. Thurmond made greatstrides as the year progressed in his freshman season in 2009-10.The 6-0, 165-pound, Poulsbo, Wash. native, dished out 2.7 assistsand scored 6.7 points per game.
The Mountaineers will look for more unselfish play from the backcourt this year after leading the Cascade Conference in assists,averaging 15.8 per game, which was also 15th in the nation.Eastern shot 38 percent from behind the perimeter which was sec-ond in the conference.
JC Cook enters NAIA basketball after being named the GreatNorthwest Athletic Conference newcomer of the year a season agoat NCAA Div. 2’s Central Washington University. The Canby, Ore.native helped lead the Cougars to the NCAA Div. 2 NationalTournament, averaging 14.7 points per game. Cook was namedsecond team All-GNAC for his efforts.
Jamar Johnson comes to La Grande after excelling at Mt. HoodCommunity College. The 6-3 incoming junior averaged 16.4 pointsand 4.8 rebounds per game last season for the Saints. He alsoshot 43 percent from behind the perimeter for MHCC. ThePortland, Ore. native was named Southern Region first team as asophomore and second team as a freshman.
Former Pima Community College contributor, Travares Peterson,joins the Mountaineers after a great two-year stint in Arizona. TheEl Paso, Texas native excelled at Chapin High School before mov-ing onto PCC. Peterson, a 6-4 wing, helped lead Pima CommunityCollege to the school’s first ever trip to the NJCAA NationalTournament and a seventh place finish. He was named a NJCAANational Player of the Week during the 2009-10 season. He aver-aged 17.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore,while shooting 51 percent from the field and 44 percent from
behind the arc.
Cook, Johnson, and Peterson were all named preseason All-Cascade Conference by the league’s coaches. Jared Heitzman willmake his debut after taking a redshirt year in 2009-10. The 6-3,180-pound freshman had an excellent career at Lewiston HighSchool in Lewiston, Idaho before signing with Eastern Oregon.
Front Court
The fourth returning player for Eastern is Robert Barrington. The 6-5, 210-pound, sophomore shot 42 percent from the field in sevengames last season. The Virginia City, Nev. native grabbed 11rebounds and scored 14 points in 2009-10.
Anthony Brown joins Cottle as a NCAA Div. 1 transfer. The 6-5,210-pound wing/forward, shined at Spokane’s Shadle Park HighSchool before signing on to play at Washington State University.There, Brown appeared in three games as a true freshman. TheSpokane, Wash. native was a four-year letter winner at ShadlePark. Brown was named to the All-Greater Spokane League sec-ond team his sophomore and junior seasons. He was then namedthe league’s Most Valuable Player and the Washington state Playerof the Year in Class 3A his senior season.
Jason Mumm averaged 15.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per gamelast season at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore.The incoming junior was an Eastern Region player at theNWAACC All-Star Game in 2009-10. The 6-7 forward had a stand-out career at Kimberly High School in Kimberly, Idaho before play-ing for the Chukars.
Jeff Ranstrom, a native of Eagle, Idaho, averaged 15.7 points and8.5 rebounds per game last season at Big Bend CommunityCollege. Ranstrom enters the Eastern Oregon campus after beingthe winner of the NWAACC’s Red Lion Scholarship in 2010 foracademic excellence. The 6-4 forward received an academic lead-ership award last year after achieving a 3.92 GPA. The formerEagle High School star was named first team All-Eastern Regionas a sophomore at BBCC and second team as a freshman.
Kyllian Wood, a Springfield, Ore. native, comes to Eastern averag-ing 16 points and nine rebounds per game at Thurston High Schoollast year. The 6-7 incoming freshman earned All-MidwesternLeague honors and played in the OSAA All-Star Series. Woodended his high school career with a team-high 20 points in the firstround of the Class 5A state tournament in 2009-10.
The Mountaineers led the conference in rebound margin last sea-son (+9.8), and was third in NAIA Div. 2 in that stat category.Eastern was second in the CCC in scoring defense giving up only69 points per game. EOU was fifth in the conference in scoringoffense averaging 78 points per game.
Schedule
Eastern Oregon was picked fifth in the CCC preseason poll lastseason before making a run that ended at second in the confer-ence and 13th in the nation. This year the Mountaineers begin atNo. 18, it’s the second highest ranking in the preseason poll inschool history. EOU had its best preseason ranking in the 2008-09season when they started at No. 6. Eastern climbed to No. 3 in thenational poll that season, the highest in school history, before end-ing the season in the national quarterfinals.
The Mountaineers travel to Helena, Mont. on Nov. 19th and 20thfor the Carroll College Classic. EOU opens the tournament againstRocky Mountain College, who won the NAIA Div. 1 national title in2008-09. Eastern will then play the host, Carroll College, the fol-lowing night.
