WELCOMEWELCOME COACH TRES ELLISCOACH TRES ELLIS

This year we’ve expanded the tournament to fifteen talented teams from across the state of Texas and and a new team from Florida. The pool includes past District, Region and State Champions, impres-sive basketball programs, legendary coaches and skilled ball players which will light up the Westlake hardwood.

2 WESTLAKE HOLIDAY
Welcome to Westlake High School and the Westlake Holiday Classic in the highly-acclaimed Eanes Independent
School District. We are proud of the outstanding tradition of Westlake athletics and of the tremendous sense of
spirit that thrives in our community. We are also proud of our student-athletes, who demonstrate dedication, and
the ability to balance academic work and personal obligations.
Westlake High School and Eanes ISD are so much more than what you see on the court today; we are vitally com-
mitted to excellence in the classroom as well. Our students consistently notch top scores in ACT, SAT and most
recently, STAAR tests and our National Merit Scholar recipient numbers are one of the highest in the region. For
the sixth consecutive year, Eanes ISD earned the Austin Chamber’s Highest Overall Direct-to-College Enrollment
Rate for a School District, with 84% of our students matriculating to a college or university.
Academic and extracurricular success do not happen by chance. It is the passionate support from our students,
staff, parents and community that make this a special place. We would not be where we are today without this
invaluable support.
Thank you for visiting Westlake High School. We hope you have a great time and that you come back soon!
Sincerely,
Nola H. Wellman. Ph.D. , Superintendent of Schools
Welcome to another exciting year of Chaparral basketball! We are happy you are here to support our student-
athletes and support groups, who do a great job of balancing school, athletics and personal commitments. From
academics to athletics to co-curriculars, Westlake High School students boast impressive achievements and experi-
ence a great deal of success throughout their high school careers. On a daily basis I find myself grateful for the
opportunity to work with a phenomenal group of students who are committed to being the very best they can be
in every way. Our faculty and staff remain committed to being the very best they can be in their craft and I am
amazed at the incredible support we receive from the parents and community, whether it be through communica-
tion, volunteering, or our Eanes Education Foundation.
Enjoy the game and thank you for supporting Westlake High School athletics!
Sincerely,
Dr. John Carter, Principal

CLASSIC TOURNAMENT 3
The Westlake Holiday Classic Tournament brings top high school basketball teams to Austin. This year Westlake Head Coach Tres Ellis has expanded the tournament in size and talent. The host Chaparrals are pleased to welcome fourteen other highly touted squads from across the state of Texas as well as a team from Orlando, Florida.
Ideal timing and a high level of competition makes the Westlake Holiday Classic a perfect final tune-up for teams prior to the start of district games. Add to that Austin’s energetic, eclectic and entertaining environment and it’s no surprise this tournament is quickly becoming a favorite of coaches, players and families.
District, Region and even State Champions abound in this field of perennial forces which includes five state ranked teams, including the number one rankings I two classifications. Powerful programs such as Fort Bend Bush (2010 State Champions), Wagner (2009 and 2010 Region Champions), Cedar Hill (2011 Region Finalist, three-time defending District Champion) and Pflugerville (perennial District Champions) will compete on the Westlake hardwood.
Of course, success is the result of great leadership. With over 40 years experience and 850+ wins, legendary Montwood Head Coach Tony Harper has been called the king of El Paso basketball. Ronnie Courtney, Fort Bend Bush’s head coach since 2007, has led high school and college teams to their greatest achievements. He has three state high school championships to go along with an NCAA Tournament berth he attained at Texas Southern University in 2003. Cedar Hill Head Coach Tim Thomas has been establishing record victory totals and state tournament appearances at every school he has coached since 1997.
As in the past, this Westlake Holiday Classic is an opportunity to see exceptionally talented individuals as well. The Westlake Holiday Classic will showcase many future college players.

Matt Haralson Matt Haralson -- WHS ‘91WHS ‘91
Westlake High School Basketball thanks the
Westlake Youth Basketball Association (WYBA) for their longstanding support and their continued development
of young athletes in the community.
Matt Haralson played an intregal role for the Chaps between 1988 to 1991, where he played forward and center for coaches Neal Calvert and Robert Brashear. Averaging 22 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists, the Chaps made it to the regional finals Matt’s senior year, where he was the only returning varsity player. Two-time All District, All Central Texas and an All Region 2nd team, Matt’s best game was the much heralded triple double against Del Valle. (22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.) An all around athlete, Matt also played for the Chaps’ tennis team. He partnered with future University of Texas All American Trey Phillips for an undefeated season. The Chaps made it to the state finals before losing a hard fought battle to Highland Park. Matt played basketball for the Texas A&M University Aggies from 1991-1996 as a forward and center. His college career saw many high points, including a career best points against SMU, two blocked shots against Arizona and multiple games with four or more rebounds. A cancer survivor since 1996, Matt and his wife Meredith have made the Westlake community their home. Along with their twin 5th graders Brennan and Christian (who attend Cedar Creek Elementary), the Haralsons’ commitment to Westlake continues to grow. A successful businessman, he and his brother own G. Creek Construction, a commercial construction company. Matt also is an energetic civic leader, serving as Cubmaster for four years and is a member of the Westlake Rotary. Matt’s love for basketball hasn’t been lost, however: he also continues to coach youth teams and also
provides one-on-one training for aspiring junior players who wish to follow in his footsteps.

Where Are They Now ? Where Are They Now ? Rich DozierRich Dozier-- WHS ‘85WHS ‘85
A three-year starter and the 1985 Mr. Basketball, Rich Dozier embodies all the great traits of the Chaps. District and Central Texas MVP in both the 1984 and 1985, Rich also earned All State honors twice, Academic All State in 1985 and participated in the THSCA All State game the same year.
After his storied Chap career, Rich played basketball at Oklahoma City University, turning down other opportunities to follow the treasured and respected Abe Lemons. There, the four-year starter earned multiple accomplishments, including All-Time Career Assist Leader and the single game free throw record (13 for 13). These accomplishments were noted: Rich was named 1990 OCU Best Athlete, and 1990 Academic All American.
After a decade of working with a family business, Rich returned to his basketball roots. In 2000, Rich signed on as head coach the Medina Boys and Girls’ Varsity Basketball teams. Seven years later, Rich took over the Hallettsville Boys Varsity program, where the team won 25 games in his second year at the helm of the program. Last year, Rich took his talents to Sonora, this time as the girls’
varsity coach. Sonora High School just happens to be where his daughters Naomi and Gracie play basketball, rounding out his experience of coaching all six of the Dozier children.
Rich and his wife Anna—an accomplished basketball player in her own right (Anna played at Little-Cyprus Mauriceville High School and Southwestern University), now reside in Sonora, Texas. But there is definitely one thing they are more passionate about than basketball: their family. Parents of six children (including two foster children and two adopted children), the Dozier family includes; Matt (30), Amanda (29), Cooper (21), Camp (19), Naomi (17) and Gracie (16). The Dozier’s are also extremely proud grandparents of three; Christian (10), Eva (1) and Cayman (6 months).

Where Are They Now ? Where Are They Now ? Tommy PendersTommy Penders-- WHS ‘90WHS ‘90
Tommy Penders graduated from Westlake High School in 1990 where he played basketball for Neal Calvert. While a Chap, Tommy earned both All-District and All-Region honors.
Tommy played basketball for the University of Texas Longhorns from 1991 to 1995. At Texas, Tommy was one of only two players to win three Southwest Conference titles in the program's history. A regular on the court from his sophomore year on, Tommy was a part of three NCAA Tournament Teams. He was also a multiple member of the GTE SWC All-Academic Team.
Following his career at Texas, Penders became an assistant coach for Jim Harrick's University of Rhode Island team that advanced to the Elite 8. After his tenure as an assistant at George Washington University, (where his Colonials won the Atlantic 10 West title and also earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament), Tommy returned to the Lone Star State.
Tommy is now entering his 11th season as a head high school basketball coach and his fourth at tradition-rich Clear Lake High School. His 2012 Falcons were a State ranked team the entire season; winning 28 games and a share of the District title with a 13-1 record. Prior to Clear Lake, Tommy was the head coach at Calhoun HS and then at Angleton, his team finished the season ranked #2 in 2006 and advanced to the State Semi-Final, its only berth in the State Tournament in the school's 81 year history.
Tommy and his wife Jennifer (an elementary school teacher) currently make their home in Clear Lake, Texas along with their children daughter Mattingly (6) and son Jaxon (3).

We want Drew! We want Drew! If you attended Longhorn basketball games in the early 2000’s you were probably chanting this along with everyone else.
Prior to walking on at Texas, Drew was a standout high school player for Westlake. In 1999, his junior season, Drew compiled 225 assists – an astonishing 6.25 per game. That year the Chaps went 28-8 and set the state UIL 5A scoring record of 120 points against Seguin. In his senior year, Drew was named All-District 1st Team while averaging 13.7 points and 4.1 assists for the 21-11 Chaparrals.
At UT, Drew played all four seasons for Head Coach Rick Barnes. Perhaps the most memorable was the 2003 team that made NCAA Final Four. Drew’s spirit, optimism, and tireless work ethic earned him respect and praise from coaches, teammates and fans.
An entrepreneurial drive, and a love of cheeseburgers, led Drew to open Hat Creek Burgers in 2008. From the humble beginnings of a trailer in downtown, Drew has perfected his burgers, as well as his business, expanding to two locations (5400 Burnet Rd and in Westlake at 360 / Bee Caves Rd) with plans for more. And of course the Big Hats are always available at UT home games whether they be at The Drum, Disch-Falk Field, or Bevo Boulevard.
Drew, his wife Shelby and daughter Lucy Bell, continue to support Westlake sports. Hat Creek Burger Co is the title sponsor of the Westlake Holiday Classic basketball tournament for the second year. Go Chaps and Go Hat Creek!
