Penelope Ward Kyle became Radford University’s sixth, and first female, president when she took office on June 1, 2005. She came to RU with more than 30 years of experience in state government, the corporate and legal worlds, and higher education.

Upon assuming the presiden-cy, President Kyle immediately focused on leading the univer-sity’s initiative to become one of the top 50 masters universi-ties in the nation. The Rad-

ford University strategic plan “7-17”, completed in 2007 at her direction, identifies four strategic directives -- the investment in people, programs, global and local society and the future of Rad-ford University.

Under President Kyle’s leadership, the univer-sity also added its first doctoral program with an emphasis in rural mental health and launched an initiative to grow graduate college student enrollment by offering additional doctoral and masters level programs. She hired the university’s first provost and created two new vice presiden-tial areas of responsibility, Information Technolo-gy and University Relations. The Radford Univer-sity Board of Visitors, at President Kyle’s request, has increased its membership by four positions to provide an opportunity for more diversity and leadership innovation within the governing body.

A native of southwest Virginia, President Kyle is a product of the Galax public schools system. She graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina and did her postgraduate stud-ies in English at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law and later earned her MBA from the College of William and Mary.

President Kyle served as Executive Director of the Virginia Lottery for 11 years, under three suc-cessive governors. First appointed by Governor George Allen in 1994, she was reappointed by Gov-ernor James Gilmore, and then reappointed once again by Governor Mark Warner. Previously, Ms. Kyle was employed by CSX Corporation, an interna-tional transportation company, where she became the company’s first female officer. Before joining CSX Corporation, she was an attorney with Mc-Guire, Woods, LLP in Richmond. She also taught English for six years at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia.

President Kyle serves in leadership positions on numerous educational, civic, cultural, profes-sional, financial and volunteer organizations. She served on the Board of Visitors at James Madi-son University from 1984 until 1992 and on the JMU Foundation Board 1992 until 1994. She also served on the Virginia Commonwealth University Foundation Board from 1994 until 2000 and on the Board of Governors of Saint Christopher’s School

from 1999 until 2005. President Kyle is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Board of Directors of PRA, Inc., a publicly traded company.

Ms. Kyle is married to Charles L. Menges, an attorney and partner with McGuire, Woods, LLC. They are the parents of a son, Kyle Ward Menges, and two daughters, Penelope Whitley Menges, and Patricia Lee Menges.

Since being introduced as Rad-ford University’s Director of Ath-letics in the fall of 2007, Radford native Robert Lineburg has helped usher in a new era of Highlander athletics, marked by unprecedent-ed on-and off-field improvements and successes.

In his short time with the department, Lineburg has been the catalyst for a number of changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel and strategic planning.

His most visible influence to date has been on the Dedmon Center, where Lineburg has been

involved with major renovations to the centerpiece of Radford athletics for more than 25 years. Beginning in the spring of 2008,

the facility underwent transformations to the arena, including a new steel-supported roof, a new basketball floor, renovated athletic offices, a new-look natatori-um, and improved athletic locker, training, and medi-cal facilities.

Lineburg has also overseen the hires of four new head coaches, as well as five new athletic administra-tors. His hires include women’s basketball head coach Taj Njongba, head volleyball coach Marci Jenkins, wom-en’s head golf coach Jeff Beeler, and the promotion of track and field interim director Brent Chumbley to head coaches’ status. Among the administrators added in Lineburg’s tenure are executive associate A.D. Randy Butt, head athletic trainer David Jager, assistant A.D. for communications Joey Beeler, director of student-athlete support services/SWA Stephanie Ballein, and as-sociate A.D. for external operations Greg Herring.

As a result of the changes, Radford achieved a ban-ner year in 2008-09: women’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s tennis and softball claimed Big South confer-ence crowns and advanced to NCAA Tournament play. Women’s soccer advanced to its fourth tournament, men’s basketball won the Big South regular-season and tournament to advance to the NCAAs for the first time since 1998, men’s tennis made its third-straight appear-ance, and softball appeared for the first time and won Radford’s first NCAA tournament game in any sport.

He and his staff have also been responsible for creating a five-year strategic plan for the Radford athletic department and building an athletics facilities

master plan. Additional achievements include usher-ing in a new athletics Internet site (RadfordAthletics.com), and helping implement a new ticket system (Ticket Return). Lineburg and his staff have also hosted top-level competition, with three Big South championships taking place on the Radford campus in 2008-09 (men’s basketball, track & field and softball).

In addition to making an impact on Radford athlet-ics, Lineburg is also involved in a number of different organizations and committees. He is the chairman of the Big South Conference Subcommittee on Basketball Improvement, a member of the Big South ad-hoc Com-mittee on Basketball Issues, and a member of the selec-tion committee to select Radford University’s Vice President for Advancement.

Prior to becoming Radford’s third Director of Ath-letics, Lineburg’s corporate knowledge was groomed as a marketing associate with Peloton Real Estate Partners in Dallas, Texas.

Along with his business experience, Lineburg spent 15 seasons as a college basketball coach, including time as Southern Methodist’s (Dallas, Texas) interim head coach. Prior to serving as the Mustangs interim head coach, Lineburg spent eight years as an assistant coach at SMU. Following his interim tenure, he served two more seasons as an assistant at Southern Methodist.

Lineburg’s coaching resume also includes assistant coaching positions with the men’s basketball pro-grams at James Madison University and Emory & Henry College, as well as with the Dallas Mavericks summer league team. His coaching experience also took him through the Big South, as he spent time on the sideline at UNC Greensboro.

A 1991 graduate of Roanoke College, Lineburg started his collegiate basketball career as a Radford Highlander, where he was a two-year letterman before transferring to nearby Roanoke College to play his final two years.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in political science with a minor in history. In 1995, he received a Master’s Degree in education from Virginia Tech, where he was also a graduate assistant on the men’s basketball staff.

Lineburg is the son of retired Radford High School football coach and athletic director Norman Line-burg and the brother of Dr. Mark Lineburg, the Assis-tant Superintendent of Amherst Country Schools, Paul Lineburg, the Assistant Principal at Cave Spring H.S. and Wayne Lineburg, who is in his third season as the wide receivers coach at the University of Virginia.

He is married to the former Mary Parish, also a na-tive of Radford.

The department of sports medicine at Radford University is deeply concerned with both the short-term and long-term effects of intercollegiate competition on the physical and mental well being of the student-athlete.

The sports medicine department is committed to providing quality health care to all varsity student-athletes, which begins with injury prevention. It is a priority to work with coaches, physicians, and the rest of the medical com-munity to ensure that student-athletes are physically and men-tally prepared for practice and

competition. Additionally, the sports medicine

staff is responsible for the treat-ment and rehabilitation of all athletically related injuries. It is the staff’s goal to return the athlete to a level equal or above that of their pre-injury status; no athlete will return to play until his or her highest post-injury level of function has been achieved.

Lastly, the concern from the physical well being of the student-athlete includes the opposition to the use of all illegal and NCAA-banned chemical substances by student-athletes. It is the responsibility of the sports medicine staff to provide athletes with information on the ill effects of drug use and to provide deter-rents through periodic, random drug testing by the institution and the NCAA.

The mission of the Student-Ath-lete Support Services (SASS) office for Radford University Athletics is to promote, assist, and provide counsel to all student-athletes. Its primary, constant goal is to de-velop graduates and outstanding citizens who have contributed in the areas of athletic competition during their tenures of educa-tion.

Located in the Dedmon Ath-letic Center, the newly established Learning Enhancement Center is equipped with computers, tutorial rooms, and a study lounge.

The Learning Enhancement Center provides direction for student-athletes via academic counseling in conjunction with advisors from the respective col-

leges at Radford University. Academic support services such as tutoring and supervised study hall are provid-ed, as well as career planning, monitoring of eligibil-ity status, and a host of other guidance and advisory services.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college ath-letics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the class-room. The League’s growing pres-ence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and me-dia partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic com-petition while intentionally foster-ing the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete.

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Chris-tenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charles-ton Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Com-missioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Rad-ford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander

replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressive-ly promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as in-creased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique tV packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initi-ated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Confer-ence committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the ad-ditions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technolog-ical advancements, as the Confer-ence introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member in-stitutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South has experienced monumen-tal growth and success in nearly

every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scor-ing leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Champion-ships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event.

The Conference’s tagline, “Devel-oping Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunc-tion with the Conference’s 25th An-niversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty Universi-ty’s 10-year women’s basketball cham-pionship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The league has had more than 95 academic all-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

Brent Chumbley is in his third season as head coach of Radford’s track & field and cross country teams.

At the conclusion of Radford’s track and field season in 2007, Chumb-ley had the “interim“ tag lifted from his title when he became the school’s director of track and field /cross country on June 23.

During Chumbley’s tenure as head coach, Radford has produced 71 all-conference performers, 19 Big South Champions, 15 regional qualifiers, 18 school records, a regional champion and an All-American.

The 2009 season was no different for Chumbley, as the Highlanders car-ried over their success from the previous year by placing fourth and sixth in the outdoor championship and sixth and seventh in the indoor championships.

Chumbley’s throwers fared well in the 2009 season as they placed in the top-five at both the indoor and outdoor championships. Freshman Aimee Veatch recorded first place finishes in the weight throw at the indoor championships and reached the podium stand twice at the outdoor championships. Chumbley also had in hands helping Lindsey Noe become the school record-holder in the pole vault.

On the men’s side, he has helped with the continued improvement of Matt Dobson and nurtured the talents of freshman Justin Smith. Each of these two individuals placed at the conference championship. Dobson and Smith in the weight throw and Smith in the hammer and discus.

Chumbley’s tutelage helped six athletes make it to the next level and qualify for the NCAA Regionals and national championships. Shemelia Brandon, Aimee Veatch and Brittany Whittaker on the women’s side and Raschad Kelso, Olajuwon Jones and the 4x400 team on the men’s side. Kyle Morse reached the next level of competition under Chumbley, as he competed in the USATF National Championships. Brett Olinger and Justin Smith also reached the next level of competition as well as they competed in the USATF Junior Champion-ships.

Chumbley’s knowledge and experience of the sport saw instant results in the 2008 season. The men’s team posted their best-ever finish, placing second at the Indoor championships. Individually the men’s and women’s teams produced seven all-conference performers.

The 2008 outdoor season saw individual Big South success and a number of Chumbley’s athletes advanced to the NCAA Regional meet. Two women-Amy Marshall and Shemelia Brandon and seven men-Kyle Morse, Nictae Moore, Daniel Oseth, Raschad Kelso, Olajuwon Jones, Wayne Gore and Gaylon Johnson-all competed in the East Regional.

Morse, an athlete under Chumbley’s teaching since his sophomore year, claimed the East Regional title in the hammer throw and advanced to the NCAA Championships, where he became Radford’s fifth All-American, and the first with Chumbley at the helm.

In 2007, Chumbley was called on to fill a new role, moving into the posi-tion of interim Program Director.

On the men’s side , Chumbley helped with the continued development of James Nixon, Radford most prolific shot put athlete, and the grooming of Morse, an eventual All-American.

On the women’s side, he helped develop the top two throwers in program’s history: Tiffany Evans and Marshall. Under Chumbley’s watchful eye, Evans racked up four conference championships and earned Big South Field Performer of the Year honors in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2007. Marshall went on to post a pair of javelin titles of her own (2007-08), and entered her name into the school record books.

In 2006, Chumbley was hired as the throws coach and in his first season there were instant results. Four throwers made their mark among the very best in the Big South and the program’s record book.

Before landing in Radford, Chumbley’s background include four different stops.

He spent the four years prior to his arrival at Radford as an assistant at Illinois State. In his time with the Redbirds, Chumbley produced one United States Olympic Trials qualifier, two NCAA Championship qualifiers, 17 NCAA Regional qualifiers, eight conference champions and 23 all-conference perfor-mances.

In addition, Chumbley helped guide his squad in setting four new school records and one conference record.

Prior to Illinois State, Chumbley spent one year at Murray State, where he helped produce one conference champion, 17 all-conference performances and guided his group in setting four school records.

Chumbley earned his Master’s in teaching (physical education) from Hast-ings College (Ky.), where he coached the NAIA affiliate school in producing two All-Americans, 12 national qualifiers, one multi event national champion and 17 new school records.

Mark White is in his third season at Radford University. White handles the sprinters and hurdles as well as the responsibilities of recruiting coordinator.

He is USA Track & Field Level Two certified in combined events.

In his first two years as an assistant coach every sprint, hurdle and relay record, both indoors and outdoors, has been broken except for one.

The 2009 indoor season saw new school records being shattered by sprinters in every meet. There were new school records set in the 60m, 60m hurdles, 200m, and 400m. The outdoor sea-son wasn’t any different as school records fell in the open 400m and the 4x400 relay record was tied.

Under White’s watch, three of his sprinters advanced to the NCAA Regional and one qualified for the Nationals. Raschad Kelso in the 200m and Olajuwon Jones in the 400m. Jones and Kelso were also members of the 4x400 relay team that also advanced to Regional competition. Freshman Brett Olinger qualified for the USTAF Junior Nationals in the 400m hurdles. On the women’s side, White helped with the emergence of Britney Whittaker, who captured the 800m Big South Championship Outdoor crown and advanced to the Regional.

The 2008 season White’s first, saw immediate results as two relay records fell and the men’s 4x400 team claimed a Big South Title and a NCAA Regional berth.

The men’s team of Wayne Gore, Jones, Gaylon Johnson and Kelso posted a time of 3:14.40 at the Big South Championship and a mark if 3:12.41 at the East Regional.

White came to Radford after spending the past 11 years teaching and coach-ing at Middlesex County, Virginia. During that time he filled a variety of athletic capacities, including six years as the school’s athletic director. He also served as the head varsity football coach and track & field coach.

Under his guidance, the Middlessex boys track and field program won three consecutive Tidewater District Championships, Region A Championship in 2006 and a state runner-up placing in 2006. White was named the Tidewater District Coach of the Year for three consecutive years (2005, 2006, 2007) and a Region A Coach of the Year in 2006.

White received his Bachelors degree in history from nearby Ferrum Col-lege in 1996. He played baseball for the Panthers for four years, where he was a teammate of perennial National League All-Star relief pitcher Billy Wagner. White also served as an assistant coach under Ferrum legend Abe Naff.

During his high school teaching/coaching career, white earned his Master Degree from Ohio University in 2006 in sports science /athletic administration.

White resides in Pembroke with his wife Susan, and daughters Abigail and Annabelle.

Willie Johnson, a gifted collegiate athlete and coach with a successful track record is in his second year as jumps coach for the Radford University men’s and women’s track & field teams.

Under the keen eye of Johnson, the 2009 track & season saw Shemelia Brandon win three conference champi-onships, two indoor and one outdoor. She also was named the Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year for the Big

South. She was also the school record holder in the long jump and an east Regional qualifier.

Johnson joined the Radford staff after three years as a graduate assistant/jumps coach with the Marshall University women’s team, where he guided two All-Conference USA performers, five school records holders, seven conference championships scorers, and three East Regional qualifiers. He also assisted with the sprinters, the throwing event workouts for the multi-event athletes, and coordinated program strength and conditioning efforts.

Johnson is a USATF Level I certified coach, earning his certification in 2005.

In May of 2008, Johnson earned his Master’s Degree in athletic administra-tion from Marshall.

The Orlando, Fla. native excelled as a collegiate triple jumper at both Florida A&M University and Florida State University. As a Seminole, Johnson was a two-time NCAA All-American (2003-04), and earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference accolades three times in the outdoor triple jump (2003-05) and once in the indoor triple jump (2004). He currently holds the fifth-best triple jump distance in school history. With the Rattlers, he was an All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference honoree in the indoor and outdoor triple jump.

The Highlanders come into the start of the season with high expecta-tions as they look to improve on last year’s indoor and outdoor champi-onship finishes.

The men placed sixth in the Big South Indoor Championship while the women finished seventh. At the outdoor championship, the men placed fourth while the women finished in sixth.

Sprinters/Middle DistanceThe sprinters should help the Radford team move up the Big South

ladder with a core group returning. Assistant coach Mark White has three regional qualifiers and one USATF Junior National qualifiers all returning.

Raschad Kelso, Olajuwon Jones, Britney Whittaker and Brett Olinger will pace the sprinters. Kelso is a regional qualifier in the 200m and 4x400 relay. Kelso also holds the indoor school records for the 60m, 200m, 400m and is part of the 4x400 relay team that has the record. His outdoor accolades are just as good with school records in the 200m, 4x100 relay and 4x400. Jones was a regional qualifier in the 400m and he is the outdoor school record-holder in the 400m. Britney Whittaker, the 800m Big South Champion, and Brett Olinger, a USATF Junior National Qualifier in the 400m hurdles look to help the High-landers reach new heights this season. Radford has conference scorers returning and will look to freshmen to come in and make a difference as well.

Freshmen Austin Cuffee, Kayla Christian, Anthony Carlie and Drew Hall will be given the chance to help contribute in getting the Highland-ers to their ultimate goal of winning a conference championship.

White is hoping that these freshman will make an immediate impact to the program.

ThrowersThrowing a hammer or tossing a javelin requires skill, technique and

strength, and those are all attributes that these returning throwers have. Head Coach Brent Chumbley was a decorated thrower himself during his collegiate career, and what he instills in his group will help the High-landers gain valuable points come conference championship time.

Coach Chumbley return’s the one of the best throwers in Radford history, Kyle Morse, an All-American in 2008 and a regional champion in the hammer throw. He holds the school record in the discus as well. Morse isn’t the only Highlander to reach the postseason. Sophomore Justin Smith qualified for the USATF Junior Nationals in the shot put over the summer. Senior Matt Dobson will also contribute in the throw-ing events as well and will look to gain valuable points for the High-landers come conference championship time.

On the women’s side, sophomore Aimee Veatch will continue to make her mark on the Big South Conference. Last year, Veatch won the hammer throw and placed third in the discus. She also won the indoor weight throw and was an All-Region peformer. She placed sixth in the NCAA East Regional in the hammer throw and was named Big South Freshman of the Year. Veatch’s off-season workouts and work ethic could help at the conference championship.

Besides the core group of throwers who will contribute Chumbley has his eyes on one incoming freshman that will look to contribute right away, Kim Johnson.

Johnson, a state champion shot putter from Bristol, held the second best high school mark in the state of Virginia in all divisions a year ago. Chumbley expects her to challenge Veatch for shot put honors come conference championship time.

JumpersJumps coach Willie Johnson lost a big part of the women’s scoring

in the jumps when Shemelia Brandon graduated, but reloaded with three freshmen who are going to score points right away for the Highlanders.

Kayla Christian, a product of New Kent High School, not only can sprint but she can jump as well. She is a raw talent with untapped po-

TRACK & FIELD: RELOADINGtential that Johnson can mold into a jumper with a bright future at Radford University. Another raw talent that Jonhson can mold is Elaine Derricott, a Richmond native, who had the sixth-best long jump in the commonwealth last year. Fellow Richmond product Jasia Richardson has untapped potential and tremendous athletic ability. Richardson won the AAA Indoor State Championship in the triple jump in 2008, as well as being the ninth ranked triple jumper in the nation.

On the men’s side, Johnson will get the use of versatile fresh-man Anthony Carlie for the long jump. Carlie was a Central District long jump champion in 2008 along with a national rank-ing of 24th and fifth in the state of Virginia. Johnson will expect him to make an immediate impact and contend for the conference crown in the long jump.

Experience often helps younger teammates develop into great athletes and that’s what Tony Brown Jr. and Bryan Wallace give. Brown placed fifth in the indoor championships and fourth at the outdoor championships in the high jump for Coach Johnson, while Bryan Wallace captured third place in the long jump at the outdoor conference championship. Both Brown and Wallace re-corded season-best marks in the high jump, triple jump and long jump during last season.

Multi EventsThe pentathlon, heptathlon, decathlon are difficult events that

test your mental, physical and emotional abilities. A two-day competition, the pentathlon, heptathlon and decathlon encom-passes every aspect of track & field and is a true test of one’s training.

Radford’s Kevin Richards, a junior, will hold the banner for Radford University track & field team in the decathlon and hep-tathlon events. He placed fourth in the heptathlon at last year’s Liberty Kickoff meet and multi events coach White is looking for him to get everything started come the conference championship.

On the women’s side, Derricott and Lindsey Noe will carry the torch for the Highlanders in the pentathlon. Noe , a junior from Goldvein, Va., is the school record-holder in the pole vault.

Distance

With the graduation of Dawitt Legesse and Joel Hanlon, the distance team will be without their top men’s performers from the 2008-09 season, but distance coach Ann McGranahan has a group of young talent that will mix well with the upperclassmen to form a formidable men’s distance squad.

Senior Liam Arocho, sophomores Nathan Turner and Eric Adams return from last year’s distance team and will look to score in the 1,500m, 3,000m, 5,000m and 10,000m in conference action. They will get some help from freshman Sam Keltner and Jared Scripture, two individuals that Coach McGranahan expects to make an early impact.

On the women’s side, McGranahan returns her best distance runner and school record-holder in the 5,000m indoors, Lori Crotts. Seniors Brittany Christian and Tara Connor will look to add depth to the distance team and provide leadership for the Highlanders as well. McGranahan will add to the already deep women’s team with the addition of freshmen Hannah Scheren and Maggie Wissler to the women’s squad.
