2009 Cross Country Preview

The 2009 Park University men’s Cross Country team will return practically every member of its 2008 squad, while the women will feature a few new runners but will rely on a few key returners as well. On the men’s side, Park will welcome back 2008 MCAC Runner of the Year, along with MCAC Freshman of the Year winner Trey Crawford. The Pirates will also return the services of three other MCAC First-Team runners as, Tyler Kranz, Eric Zorn and Will Zibers will all be back for head coach Brian Renshaw. “It’s great to have so many returners back out there in competition for us this year,” Renshaw said. “We will look for them to lead our new guys and help us through our first year back in competition in the AMC.” Park University’s athletic department as a whole will rejoin the American Midwest Conference in 2009 after leaving the conference for the Mid-lands Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2000. There are many solid teams that the Pirates will face in the AMC including McKendree University, Wil-liam Woods and Missouri Baptist. All three of those schools had athletes represented in the 2008 NAIA Men’s Cross Country National Championship meet in Kenosha, Wisc. Park’s women’s squad will have a different feel to it this Fall as eight new runners will join the team, but three solid returners will also be back to help lead the way. 2007 and 2008 MCAC Runner of the Year, Romona Nicolls will return for Park in her final year with the Pirates along with senior Rachel Fessenden. Both Fessenden and Nicolls have been staples in the cross country program for the past three year. Junior Maria Tutu will also be back for Park as she enters her junior year. The Kansas City, Mo. native helped the 2008 women’s team qualify for its fourth NAIA Championship meet in a row last season. Park will get the season started on Sept. 5 as they travel to Lawrence, Kan. for the annual Bob Timmons Classic. The Pirates will go up against some of the finest cross country programs in the midwest. Last season the women’s team took fourth place, while the men came in sixth at the Clas-sic. Two weeks later the Pirates will travel to Joplin, Mo. and compete in one of the premiere cross country events in the country, the Southern Stam-pede, hosted by Missouri Southern State University. The meet usually has up to 40 teams participate in the collegiate race and features over 1,000 runners throughout the day in numerous races. On Oct.3 Park will host its first cross country meet in nearly 25 years. The Pirates will host the Park University Invitational, held at Platte Ridge Park in Platte City, Mo. The women’s 5K race will begin at 10:00 a.m. while the men will get started at 10:30. “We are very excited to host our first meet in a very long time,” Renshaw said. “Platte Ridge Park is a great place to run and I think it will give the runners a good challenge.” Park will finish out the regular season with a meet at Haskell Indian Nations University on Oct. 10 and Graceland University on Oct. 24. The AMC Championship meet will take place on Nov. 7 in St. Louis, Mo. and will be hosted by McKendree. For the first time in three years the NAIA National Championship meet will not take place in Kenosha, Wisc., as it moves to Portand, Ore. this season for the both the men’s and women’s competition.

2010 Track and Field Preview Similar to Park’s 2009 cross country team, the Pirates track and field squad for will feature some familiar faces but will also add some fresh new faces to be part of the mix. Park will return the foundation of a strong Mid-Distance team for the men’s and women’s squad and a dynamic sprinter for the men’s team. The 800-meter race should be a strong event for both the men’s and women’s team as school record holder Romona Nicolls will return for her senior season and compete in the 800. Nicolls competed in the 2009 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships last Spring in Ed-wardsville, Ill. and broke Park’s 20 year 800-meter school record with a time of 2:15.24. Sondra Ellis previously held the record with a time of 2:16.00 in 1989. Park’s 800-meter specialist, Zack Smith will return for Park in ‘09. Smith ran the three fastest times of any Pirate in the 800 last season and had his best finish of the year at the Darrel Gourley Open hosted by William Jewell on April 4, when he placed sixth. The Pirates top sprinter last year was Sadiki James. The senior out of Fyzabad, Trinidad and Tobago, finished in the top four in many 100-meter races and won the 100-meter race at the Missouri Southern Invitational. He also posted four of the fastest times in the 200-meter race. James qualified for the 2009 Indoor and Outdoor National Championships and will look to help lead all of the newcomers this season. Park will bring in six newcomers on the men’s side this season, while the women’s team will welcome 13 new athletes. The track season will begin on Mar 10 at Emporia State’s Emporia Twilite. 10 days later the Pirates will travel to Fayette, Mo. and compete in Central Methodist’s Invitational. Park will face rival Baker University on Mar. 27 and Townsend Cup rival William Jewell on April 3, before traveling to NCAA Div. II opponent Pittsburg State University for the Gorilla Classic on April 10. On April 16, Park will compete in the Mule Relays, a competition the Pirates fared quite well in last year. Finally the regular season will come to the end on April 24 at the Williams/Laptad Invite hosted by Missouri Southern State University. Teams will fight for a spot at Nationals at the AMC Championship meet from April 30-May 1. The meet will take place in Lebanon, Ill. and will be hosted by McKendree University. It will be the first time Park has competed in a conference meet since 2000 when Park was originally a part of the AMC before leaving in the Fall of 2000 for the MCAC. The NAIA Outdoor National Championships will have a new venue this year, as it moves to Marion, Ind. and will be hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University, from May 27-29.

The American Midwest Conference (formerly known as the Show-Me Collegiate Conference sponsors championships in 13 different sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar founda-tions to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment.

The purpose of the National Association of Intercolle-giate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and develop-ment of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a com-mon commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each mem-ber institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall ath-letic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources cur-rently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa. The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of In-dependent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 champion-ships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Char-acter program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of compe-tition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibil-ity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

2009 Track and Field Recap 2009 was another stellar year for the Park University men’s and women’s track and field squad. The Pirates featured one of the fastest male sprinters in the country in junior Sadiki James and had consistently superb performances from veteran runners Erycka Fisher and Romona Nicolls. The Pirates began 2009 at the Highland Indoor Invitational on Jan. 31. The women’s squad took home eight first-place winners and dominated the competition from the start. Freshman Tina Gaines took home first in the 200-meter run with a time of 27.09 and fellow sprinter Fisher also took home first-place in the 400-meter with a time of 1:01.47. The men’s squad also blew past the competition capturing many top five finshes of their own. Three Pirates finished in the top 10 in the 500-meter run as Devin Haddix took home second with a time of 1:09.64, Luke Wolkers placed sixth with a mark of 1:11.98 and Zack Smith took eight with a time of 1:12.77. Next up for the Pirates on the indoor schedule was the Mule Relays, hosted by University of Central Missouri. Senior Rachel Fessen-den ran the fastest 3000-meter race of the indoor season for any Pirate, with her time of 10:47.21 and a stellar second place finish. Also at the Mule Relays, Park’s 4x400-Yard relay team, took fifth-place with a quick time of 4:12.22. As for the men’s squad, James ran the fastes 60-meter time of any Pirate all season long, with a time of 6.93 and a seventh place finish. Senior Arries Scott also performed well that day, running a swift 200-meter time of 22.64. James and Fisher eventually qualified for the NAIA Indoor National Championship meet in Johnson City, Tenn. from March 5-7. James qualified in the 60-meter race, while Fisher qualified for the 600-meter national race. James eventually finshed fourth in his prelimi-nary heat at nationals, with a time of 6.99, but did not qualify for the final heat. Fisher ran a time of 1:38.72, good for 3rd-place in her heat and 15th best time on the day. Despite the great effort, Fisher did not qualify to run in the championship heat the next day. Park began the 2009 outdoor season at rival William Jewell’s Darrel Gourley Open on April 4. Haddix and Wolk-ers ran solid times in their perspective meets for the men’s squad, as Wolkers took home second-place in the 400-me-ter hurdles with a time of 58.36 and Haddix ran a solid time of 50.29 in the 400-meter, which was also good for second-place. Gaines won the 100-meter race, with a time of 12.34, outrunning not only top NAIA competitors but NCAA runners as well. Her mark of 12.34 was the fastest 100-meter time any Pirate all season. Gaines also won the 200-meter race that day, with a time of 26.56. Fisher also won the 400-meter race with a time of 1:07.29. On April 11, the Pirates traveled to NCAA D-II foe Pittsburg State University for the Gorilla Classic meet. Nicolls had a terrific meet, placing third in the 800-meter race, with a time of 2:16.09 and jumper Tashauna Robinson also fared well at the meet, with her long jump mark of 5.15m, good for fourth place. The Pirates qualified three athletes for the NAIA Outdoor National Championship meet in Edwardsville, Ill. on May 21-23, as James, Fisher and Nicolls attempted to bring home a championship to Park. Fisher ran a time of 1:04.18, which was good for third place in her heat and qualified for the semifinal heat. Fisher eventually took fifth-place in her heat with a time of 1:03.22, which was not quite quick enough to qualify for the finals. James too qualified for the semifinal heat in the 100-meter race, as he ran a time of 11:05 in the preliminaries. He decreased his time in the semifinal heat with a time of, 10.92, good seventh-place in the heat, but not enough to get him in the final race. Nicolls stole the show for the Pirates in the 800-meter race, as she ran a time of 2:15.24 in the 800 and broke Park’s all-time school record, that was once held by Sondra Ellis. Ellis ran the 800 in 2:16.00 way back in 1989. Despite setting the new school record, Nicolls placed sixth in her heat and did not qualify for the finals.

Sadiki James (left) will look to return to the NAIA National Championship meets again this season as he finishes his last season with the Pirates.

Director of Athletics

Claude

English Director of Athletics18th Year at Park

Claude W. English is in his 14th year as Park University’s Director of Athletics, serving as Park’s AD since January 1996. He is in his 19th year as a member of the athletics staff at Park University. English also coached the Pirate men’s basketball squad for 13 seasons, retiring from coaching at the end of the 2004-05 season. Through English’s tenure as athletics director, Park has undergone vast improvements, including the addition of women’s golf and baseball as intercollegiate sports.

Additionally, English has overseen numerous facility improvements, including the 1,500-seat Julian Field, home to Park University men’s and women’s soccer, as well as Breckon Sports Center, which houses Park’s men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s volleyball and adminis-trative offices. Breckon Sports Center, named after Dr. Donald J. Breckon, also houses an indoor practice facility for fall and spring sports. In 2008 Park athletics had another banner year, as the softball pro-gram qualified for its first ever NAIA National Championship appearance and picked up a win in the National Tournament along the way. Park’s women’s soccer program qualified for its eighth NAIA National Tourna-ment appearance and the men’s squad qualified for its ninth appearance and seventh in a row. Park’s baseball team finished 2008 with a 34-12 record, which set the mark for most wins all-time in a season for the program. During the 2007-08 season, Park made history under English’s watch, winning its second men’s volleyball National Invitational Tournament Championsip in April, followed by the school’s first-ever regular-season conference championship in softball.

Women’s golf also advanced to its first-ever national tournament after winning its first-ever Region IV championship, accomplishing the feat in the program’s fifth year of varsity status. In addition to the nine Park squads that advanced to national competition, three more sports – women’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball – were within one game of qualifying for national tournaments in ‘07-08. The winningest coach in Park men’s basketball history with a record of 182-207, English’s coaching tenure was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Final Four in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sports-manship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After playing basketball for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford Capi-tals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capi-tals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. He joined the coaching staff at the University of Rhode Island in 1972 where he remained for 12 years, including four seasons as the head coach from 1981-84. English was named Coach of the Year in the Atlan-tic 10 Conference in 1981. Overall, he owns a 227-277 combined career record in 17 seasons as a head coach at Park University and Rhode Island.
