  • It was the greatest finish in the history of Southeastern Louisiana Track and Field. Trailing UT Arlington by one and a half points heading into the final event, the Lions 4x400 meter relay team posted a school record time to beat the Mavericks and capture the 2009 Southland Confer-ence mens outdoor championship.

Tasting that success made the Lions hun-gry for more, while the Lady Lions want to have their own moment in the cham-pionship spotlight.

    Distance/Cross Country

On the mens side, Kalphys Kemboi and Henry Rop enter the 2010 track season after another stellar cross country cam-paign in 2009. The pair earned All-South-land and All-Louisiana honors after fin-ishing in the top 10 at the league meet. Rop went on to capture a top 20 finish in the NCAA south central regional meet.

Kemboi and Rop will be supported by Jaron Ortego, a transfer from the Univer-sity of Louisiana at Lafayette, plus senior Kyle Golden. Freshman Jesse McDavitt will redshirt during the indoor season, but could contribute in the 10k during the outdoor campaign. New Orleans na-tive Scott Richardson joins the Lions af-ter a solid career at Brother Martin High School, and will likely be a key compo-nent of the distance medley relay. On the womens side, there are great

expectations for junior Dorcus Kapkiai. The Louisiana Sports Writers Association awarded her with cross country co-run-ner of the year honors. She was South-easterns top female runner in every meet she participated in during the 2009 season and earned two individual victo-ries in the process.

Naomi Jeruto was the LSWAs choice as female newcomer of the year. The trans-fer from Lindenwood College made an immediate impact on the Southeastern womens cross country team. She racked up four straight individual top ten fin-ishes. The Lady Lions will be counting on her to perform well in middle distance races.

    Sprints/Hurdles

Southeastern has an outstanding group of hurdlers returning in 2010. For the men, Kernell Jupiter, Cory Roberts and Damian Manning are expected to have great indoor and outdoor seasons. They should head up one of the most solid units on the team.

Adlus Wiltz looks to improve upon his school record 800 meter run time of 1:53.18 during the indoor campaign. Outdoors, hell be called upon to lead the Lions in the 400 meter dash, and will be part of the championship 4x400 meter relay team again in 2010.

Shannon Grover will be called on to con-

tribute in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 4x100 meter relay and 4x400 me-ter relay. He reached the NCAA outdoor regionals in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash in both the 2008 and 2009 season, and should have a three-peat performance in 2010.

TCU transfer Andon Mitchell does not have outdoor eligibility, but will be a fac-tor during the indoor campaign. The for-mer Horned Frog captured All-American honors and four Mountain West Confer-ence championships during his time in Fort Worth.

The long sprints group will feature the talents of Jerel Butler, who missed quali-fying for regionals in the 400 meter dash last season by less than half a sec-ond. George Cunningham will be a big boost to the Lions in the indoor season, but does not have outdoor eligibility left. Both Butler and Cunningham could score in 400 meter dash and 4x400 meter relay.

Judith Schultheis returns to the South-eastern womens track team after com-peting unattached in 2009, and immedi-ately steps back in the role of top hurdler for the Lady Lions. Her primary focus will be the 60 meter hurdles, but shell also join the 4x400 meter relay team.

Erika Payton should also be a big contrib-utor for the Green and Gold. She scored last year in the 200 meter dash at the

  • Southland Conference indoor and out-door championships.

    Jumps

On the mens side, two-time Southland Conference champion Michael Rheams looks to add even more hardware to his trophy case. This solid veteran won the outdoor triple jump title in 2008 and fol-lowed that up with an indoor long jump victory in 2009.

Sophomore Kovey Simmons has a great shot to lead the SLC in vertical jumps. He took fifth place in the outdoor champi-onships last season, despite the meet being his first performance of the sea-son due to injury. He also posted a top ten finish in the pole vault at the indoor championships.

Michelle Ogashi is Southeasterns top returning female in the long and triple jump. She was consistent as a freshman and should be in a position to be on the podium at the conference champion-ships as a sophomore.

    Throws

Adonson Shallow may be the best all-around thrower in the country, with amazing skills in shot put, discus, ham-mer, weight throw and javelin. He has already assured his spot in Southeastern lore with record-breaking throws in the

hammer, weight throw and indoor shot. In discus, he advanced to the NCAA Na-tional Championships in 2009, placing 11th.

Faisal Muhammad is also back for 2010. He set the school record in the weight throw early in the indoor campaign last year, only to see it broken by Shallow later. The two very well may continue to trade places at the top of the all-time list.

Kyle Francis also has a chance to score in weight throw at the indoor champi-onships to close out his Southeastern career.

Yvette Schubert looks to return to the form that saw her capture the 2008 Southland Conference outdoor title in javelin. She took sixth place season, and also put together a top ten performance at the Texas Relays.

Renada Living saw consistent improve-ment in hammer throw throughout the 2009 outdoor season. Amber Thomas and Shalicia Rochon also have oppor-tunities to break through at the college level.

    Combined Events

Senior Cory Roberts looks to close out an amazing career with the Lions. He was the 2009 Southland Conference outdoor de-cathlon champion, setting a school record

in the process with 7,451 points. Roberts ended the year with a 19th place finish at the NCAA National Championships.

Chris Robinson looks to break back into the top ten in 2010. He placed ninth in de-cathlon at the 2008 conference meet, but dropped to 12th place last year.

    Schedule

Southeasterns schedule will not take the Lions and Lady Lions to all corners of the country, but that wont keep them from competing against the nations best teams. The Green and Gold will line up vs. Olympians and national champions on a regular basis.

Highlights include several visits to Baton Rouge for meets at LSU, plus an appear-ance at the Texas Relays, arguably the finest collegiate track meet in the United States.

This set-up will give Southeasterns com-petitors a chance to be real student-ath-letes. Not being on long road trips every weekend, theyll be able to have a life out-side of athletics and further enjoy their college experience.

The Lions and Lady Lions hope there is one very long trip, though. By qualifying for the NCAA Division I National Cham-pionships, Southeastern would go to historic Hayward Field, home of the Uni-versity of Oregon.

In his eighth season as South-eastern Louisianas track and field coach, Sean Brady led themens team to its first SouthlandConference championship. The for-mer Southeastern pole vaulter has built the Lions and Lady Lions into a force in the highly competitive league and expects continued suc-cess in 2010. Shortly after winning the confer-ence title, Brady made program his-tory once again as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named him the 2009 South Central Region Co-Mens Head Coach of the Year, sharing the award with Chris Bucknam, head coach of the 2009 SEC champion and traditional national powerhouse program at the University of Arkan-sas. The national honor came on the heels of being named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year. Im very honored to receive this award, Brady said. Its nice to see our program mentioned with some of the best in the nation. However, this award is not about a head guy. This is a credit to the effort our kids put in all year long and a credit to the support our administration and university has given us. Without that, something like this wouldnt be possible. So Im happy that our program has put itself in a position to get itself mentioned with one of the best programs in the nation.

Bradys main duties include over-seeing the Southeastern sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams; a group that broke three school records and saw five NCAA Mideast Regionalqualifiers during the course of the2009 season.
