¡Bienvenidos Líderes!on behalf of the national Council of la raza’s Board and staff, welcome to the 2008 Líderes Summit and nClr Annual Conference! Welcome also to beautifulSanDiego, acitywithLatinflare, richhistory, and world-class attractions. We have put together an exciting and challenging program for you and believe you will truly enjoy this experience.

As nClr celebrates 40 dedicated years of promoting Hispanic civil rights throughout America, we watch our nation approach a major political and social turning point. We have witnessed a stunning development in the immigration debate as hate groups and extremists have commanded an

undeserved spotlight in the media. With false statistics and dehumanizing speech, these people disparage not just immigrants, but all latinos. However, with the launch of our campaign and website, WeCanStopTheHate.org, we have challenged the cable television networks that support these vigilantes to restore integrity to the newsroom and our community.

As we promote this campaign, our gaze is turned to 2008’s momentous election. The presidential campaigns have already broken historic ground, and we all have an opportunity to become a part of that history. The decisions we make when we march to the voting booths in november demonstrate the power of our opinions – we truly have the ability to steer this great nation.

In recognition of your passion and ability as youth, we look to you to help us lead this movement. our population is young – nearly half of all latinos in the u.S. are under 25 years old – so you are the leaders of our community. In fact, many of you have already taken it upon yourselves to address our issues, empower each other, and bring about social justice. We commend you on these efforts and encourage you to make the most of this Summit experience.

Ask yourself, “What do I want to gain from this Conference? What issues do I want to learn about?” But most importantly, ask yourself how you will use these Conference resources to inspire change. We gather during a unique moment in history – a turbulent time that also shows tremendous promise. on the brink of major change for our country, we have before us a window of opportunity to push forward with greater strength and effectiveness.

Thank you for coming and for sharing this program with us. ¡Adelante!

Janet Murguía President and Ceo

National Council of La RazaThe national Council of la raza (nClr)—the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the united States—works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliatedcommunity-basedorganizations(CBOs),NCLRreachesmillionsofHispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto rico, and the District of Columbia. To achieve its mission, nClr conducts applied research, policy analysis, andadvocacy,providingaLatinoperspectiveinfivekeyareas—assets/investments,civilrights/immigration,education,employmentandeconomicstatus, and health. In addition, it provides capacity-building assistance to its Affiliateswhoworkatthestateandlocalleveltoadvanceopportunitiesforindividuals and families.

Foundedin1968,NCLRisaprivate,nonprofit,nonpartisan,tax-exempt organization headquartered in Washington, DC. nClr serves all Hispanic subgroups in all regions of the country and has operations in Atlanta, Chicago, los Angeles, new York, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Antonio, and San Juan, Puerto rico.

The nClr Líderes Summit provides an exciting and challenging leadership experience for young people. A component of the nClr Annual Conference, the Summit brings together more than 450 students, activists, and young latino leaders (ages 14-25) from across the country.

Líderes Summit activities build up young leaders, teaching them how to work with one another in teams, and challenging them to think through tough issues affecting the latino community. Moreover, the Summit provides a safe space for them to share their thoughts and opinions. lastly, the Líderes Summit incorporates many nClr Annual Conference events, allowing youth to partake in an invaluable networking experience.

The Summit is a core pillar of the nClr Líderes Initiative, a national program designedtoincreasethenumber, capacity, andinfluenceofyoungLatinoleaders in the united States. The Líderes network operates at a national level to support and strengthen programs and organizations serving latino youth. Pleasevisithttp://lideres.nclr.orgtolearnaboutourprogram.

Unless otherwise indicated, all Líderes Summit activities will take place at the San Diego Convention Center.
