Have an interactive format that includes audience participation/discussion

Successful sessions will:

Be fun, engaging, and informative Contain clearly stated, practical learning

objectives Provide reference materials or other handouts to

participants Specify a target audience (high school students,

college students, or both)

Our Audience

The Líderes Summit audience consists of high school and college-age youth; community organizers; leaders of community-based organizations; volunteers, mentors, and staff of nonprofit organizations; program officers from foundations; corporate representatives in community relations and social responsibility areas; and government program directors focused on improving Hispanic leadership.

Who Should Submit Proposals?

High school and college students; community leaders; higher education faculty; and mentors and staff representing corporate, nonprofit, and federal organizations are encouraged to submit proposals.

Preferred Workshop Topics

NCLR encourages Summit workshops to follow one or more of the following tracks. When submitting a workshop, identify your track on the application form.

Leadership DevelopmentWorkshops in this track cover programs and strategies that strengthen the leadership qualities of youth and teach them how to be better advocates for their communities. Workshops in this track also feature best practices in youth development, community engagement, and volunteerism.

EducationWorkshops in this track offer strategies that can improve the academic achievement of Latino students. Topics include information on college admission, preparation for

college, and academic time management. Also covered are tips for paying for college and advice on achieving academic success.

HealthWorkshops in this track feature information on the prevention of diseases such as obesity, diabetes, drug addictions, and HIV and other STDs and raise awareness of their effect on the Latino community. This track also covers issues such as mental health and the examination of traditional gender roles and how they affect personal growth and achievement.

Advocacy and PolicyWorkshops in this track allow students to hear from leaders influencing and shaping the public policy decisions that have an impact on Hispanics, particularly on Hispanic youth. Workshops feature legislative and policy briefings, present successful advocacy strategies, and introduce innovative tools that can refine youth leadership in the field of advocacy.

Career PlanningThese workshops cover programs to strengthen the employment and career prospects of Latino youth, featuring best practices in youth workforce preparation and offering valuable information about preparing for a successful professional career. Often these sessions include résumé-writing and review, tips on effective writing skills, an overview of how to effectively finance for the future, and advice on networking.

Financial PlanningWorkshops in this area provide sound financial advice for students. Bearing in mind the unique challenges that young Latinos face in financing their education, workshops in this track help students plan wisely so they can achieve their long-term objectives.

Cultural AppreciationThis newly created track was added to provide a space for groups and programs that highlight the cultural, literary, musical, artistic, economic, and professional contributions of Latinos to the U.S. Sessions in this track creatively inform students about the diverse facets of the Latino community and foster a sense of cultural pride in our students. Groups are encouraged to explore topics such as multiculturalism, generational differences, the immigrant experience, and growing up with a bicultural identity.
