Inspired by a warrior queen

• email: [email protected] Editor: Marilyn Cox Accounts: Susan McRae Production: Geoff Spencer Advertising design: Megan Lea

What rain we have had in the night. It’s as if the water for all those months of drought was stored up there somewhere and came down at once. I got up in the middle of it to put the cat outside and he looked at the solid wall of water and then around at me as if to say “Are you serious?”I had a parcel sent to me last week from Jackie Dee who gets the Bream Bay News posted to her in Katikati with a card in it thanking me and the people who work in the BBNs office for “fighting the good fight”. Enclosed was this beautiful pen drawing of a Warrior Queen which has given my family members a good laugh. If you could see me Jackie, mid - fifties, five foot two and, this morning, wearing a pair of furry animal slippers. I like the picture. I will put it on the wall above my computer and be inspired. I will work harder, make more phone calls, send more emails. The public deserves to know the truth. Which brings me to the subject of Mark Simpson the Chief Executive Officer of the Whangarei District Council and some still unanswered email questions I sent to him via his Personal Assistant over a week ago. I asked Mr. Simpson for a copy of an email sent to Councillor Phil Halse (who passed it on the Ruakaka Ratepayers Association), which contained some rather vague figures on the cost

need something it isn’t a bargain. When I found out about Mr. Simpson’s trip to Sydney with Mr. Scott last year and asked how much this had cost, I got the reply that it was “about $1000”. Did he fly economy and stay at a back packers? Councillors Phil Halse and Shelley Deeming are always telling us how hard it is to wrest money from the council for our local projects with all the other councillors arguing for funds to be spent in their own patches. I think it incumbent on our councillors and on us all as ratepayers, to make sure money we do manage to get for Bream Bay projects is spent wisely. This isn’t easy if we don’t get given clear and accurate information from the council’s staff.

of the Ruakaka Structure Plan exercise. I asked what the cost of purchasing the document from the developer Oliver Scott had been and if the cost of Mr. Simpson’s trip to Australia with Mr. Scott had been included in these figures. I have had a reply from Jan Walters, the PA, saying she had passed the questions on but nothing yet from Mr. Simpson. I think questions about money spent on the Ruakaka Structure Plan exercise are being treated a bit too casually. This was our money the council wasted. As Graeme Finlayson of the Ruakaka Ratepayers said in his report to the group’s AGM, council staff told us that this new plan was being funded with private money and this was a structure plan at bargain rates. If you don’t

“The previous Structure Plan already had a large area included for industrial and commercial development, very little of which has been taken up.“We believe that this, and other examples of planning could have been or can be deferred until such time as the present economic recession abates.”The new Ruakaka Plan was actioned at the request of the developer Oliver Scott, who employed the planner Lee Joffe to remodel the earlier Ruakaka plan (of which Mr Joffe was the chief archetect) to include a new city centre on land Mr. Scott has an interest in along McCathie Rd., in One Tree Point. Mr. Scott and the Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Mark Simpson took a three - day trip to Australia together in June 2008 to look at the Rouse Hill development in West Sydney which Mr. Scott said was “all part of the big picture for the long term development of One Tree Point.” The Whangarei District Council purchased the Scott/Joffe plan and proceeded with a round of public consultation, called in public submissions and held a three - day hearing. After listening to submissions which raised concerns about climate change and sea level rise, the council commissioned the Tonkin and Taylor coastal hazards study. The new Ruakaka Structure Plan was adopted by the Council in November 2009 but none of the zone changes needed to incorporate it into the district plan have been undertaken. As he presented the Ruakaka Structure Plan hearing committee’s recommendations to the Whangarei District Council’s Environmental Committee, Councillor Vern Williams said, “As we know the present zonings are sufficient to cater for the population and industry requirements for many years to come. Uptake on these zonings may be 20 or 50 years plus. The new town centre may be a great thing in 20 or 50 years time if the population uptake justifies it, or it may never happen.”Paul Waanders, the council’s Policy and Monitoring Manager, said he expects Mr. Scott will lodge a private plan change application some time in the future to change the zoning on the industrial park land currently zoned Industrial 4 (for heavy industry) he owns on Marsden Point Rd. Under the new plan this area is marked for a more general mixed commercial and light industrial zoning, which would be more compatible alongside the proposed new town centre.

Bream Bay News Page 327 May 2010

“I know they are working on it”, Mr. Waanders said.

Work was completed last month on a 120 - metre long rock revetment wall with a concrete walkway along the top at Paradise Point. The job, which cost $103,000, was commissioned by the Whangarei District Council’s Parks Department and contracted to the Matapouri firm, Clements. Paul McDonald, the council’s parks manager, said the wall had been “many years in the making.”It required publicly notified resource consent from the Northland Regional Council (obtained in January 2009) and approval from the Department of Conservation as it involved reclaiming 230 square metres of seabed behind the wall. It replaces a badly damaged wooden and concrete seawall, which was built in the 1980s to council engineer requirements as part of the consent for the Paradise Point subdivision. The new wall has been engineered to provide a platform for the walkway. Rocks are buried a metre into the sand and fitted carefully into one another. The wall was back filled with sand from the Marsden Cove canal dredging stockpile in storage at the port. Mr. McDonald said, “It came through pretty strongly in submissions that people wanted to retain access to and along the coast.” Public access to the new walkway is by way of a public right of way off the roundabout at the end of road entrance to Paradise Point. Kay Aarts said the revetment wall is “fantastic.”She and her husband Bert developed Paradise Point Subdivision back in the 1980s. She has been trying to get something done about the damaged seawall for the past 20 years. “We had to give that foreshore land to the council and to build the seawall when we subdivided. It cost us a lot of money at the time but it has never been maintained.”

Kay said the new wall protects only about one third of the cliff face in front of Paradise Point. She said doing something about erosion of the Paradise Point cliffs was more urgent than protection for other areas of the coastline as the problem here is man made and the timber and concrete debris from the remaining sections of the damaged wall are both dangerous and unsightly. Asked when the remaining cliff face at Paradise Point will be given the rock wall treatment, Mr. McDonald said there is no money budgeted and no immediate plans to continue the wall and walkway here. However, the council has commissioned a report by the consultancy firm Opus into the state of all the permitted structures (seawalls, jetties, stairways etc.) on the 50 kilometres of coastal reserve land it holds in the district. This report, expected to be completed by the end of next month, will prioritise which coastal structures, need maintenance and repair. Those that present a danger to the public will be put first on the list and some adjustments may need to be made to the council’s 10year budget.

economic recession was looming and yet Council still continued with the new Ruakaka Structure Plan. It was obvious that there would be a substantial slowing of growth in Ruakaka and that the development of the Plan could be deferred. “In 2009 we were informed that there were over 3000 new residential sections already consented and not built on. Calculations based on a realistic 6% population growth rate for our area, and assuming that each residence would house 3 persons, reveal that in ten years time the population will have climbed to 5,500 and that there would still be about 2,300 sections available to be built on.

While turning left out of the Macleans Road turnoff onto Cove Road today, I noticed a Traffic Officer stra-tegically parked on the opposite side of the road, just around the corner out of eyesight of cars travelling down Cove Road. I am motivated to expressing my delight in seeing this today, because in the seven years I have been living here, this is the first time I have actually seen this in the vicinity of our home. I say this because my wife and I live on Cove Road. In our time here, we have seen at least half a dozen acci-dents on the corner of Macleans/Cove Road, whereup-on excessive speed and poor judgment most certainly have been contributing factors. Furthermore, on a daily basis all year round, we see cars travelling down Cove Road at extremely high speed, which sometimes I can-not bear to watch for fear of an accident happening. In the years we have lived here, the density and speed of traffic passing by our home has increased exponen-tially, and along with it my real fear that one day I just might have to walk down the road and help clean up a horrible mess. I have lost count of the times when I have wondered to myself...”just where are the Traffic Officers when you need them here?” So it is not surprising then that I would personally like to see Traffic Officers continuing to strategically park themselves along Cove Road to act as a deterrent for the high speed antics I see here daily...it’s time guys.

Steve Hinge, Cove Road

Delighted to see Traffic Officer deterrent to high speed antics on Cove Rd.

Concerning the April 15 paper about the “Waipu com-pany in liquidation”. Is that all you could say concern-ing this subject? What about the great impact that Mr Malcolm Harker has had on so many peoples lives especially my own daughter. It’s upsetting what has happened to Mr Hark-er and his family and I think he deserved more than just a mention of his misfortunes and the obvious facts of the liquidation. You spoke with total disregard for the effect of this mat-ter on his life, without feeling, or care for his welfare and livelyhood. I think it was very disrespectful to him as his products and knowledge bring great healing to many peoples lives. And I hope that he in some way can still operate because his knowledge is priceless for those that can only have natural products like my daughter who is allergic to everything from peanuts to dairy and suffered with eczema since she was five months old. I think he deserved alot more consideration and care than what he got. I’m sorry if maybe another nicer story has been mentioned since then as I haven’t looked at any later issues of your paper, or if you could consider researching this lovely man and the good he has done.

Maybe a nicer story?

Rawinia Millar

Having recently paid yet another large tax bill I am afraid I don’t have much sympathy towards someone who, while not paying taxes, has built himself a ridicu-lously extravagant mansion in the hills of Waipu.Taxes, after all, are what provide, amongst other things, WINZ beneftis, old age pensions, educational and health services and our roading network.

Editor’s reply

SH 1 Intersections - 1, 2 or 3Transit(or its latest re-incarnation) would probably like no intersections fromWaipu to the SH1 - it would be better for their budget. As a compromise theywould like just one intersection.SH 1 used to pass through Waipu - Transit worked with the Waipu community and a bypass of Waipu was con-structed, leaving us with three intersections, and some-other benefits such as landscaping and beautification projects. Now Transit, like many other local and central govern-ment departments is struggling to maintain its infra-structure and wants to offload the costs of maintenance and development to someone else - anyone else but them. Theirresponse to Waipu’s Structure Plan is to say that no more development should happen until money for in-tersection upgrades. When will this stop - it is simply another form of taxation. However, taxes like death are inevitable, so I wonder if there is not a compromise. My compromise would be maintain the intersections at The Braigh and Nova Scotia Drive as major access points, and downgrade the Shoemaker Rd intersection by putting some form of ve-hicle slow down via humps or islands. That way it remains accessible, but not an easy access, so pushing most trafficto the other intersections. The AGM Of the Waipu Residents and Ratepayers will this year have this topic as the major business of the meeting. Come along and share your views, and lets see if we can give some strong community feedback to Transit. Come along to the AGM on Wednesday 28 July

The Whangarei District Council’s roading department understood its mission as far as the One Tree Point cliff revetment wall went was to shore up the cliff and to protect the road from falling into the sea. However a residents liaison group, with representatives of the Ruakaka Residents and Ratepayers Association have ideas that eventually a walkway can be built along the top of the rocks and this group is unhappy with the work, which has been carried out so far. “It looks as though trucks have just dumped a whole lot of rocks on the beach,” said RRRA chairman Graeme Finlayson. The residents group want the rocks packed tighter and the wall built out from the cliffs and back filled with sand to provide a flat area along the top similar to the recently constructed wall at Paradise Point. The result of this misunderstanding is that sections of the work already undertaken may need to be dismantled. Two new trial sections are currently being constructed along the lines of the residents’ requests. Jeff Devine, the council’s roading manager, said one trial

section is being built along a straight section of beach and a second will be built around a pohutukawa tree where construction is more complicated. The Council’s resource consent for the work stipulates that although some of the trees can be trimmed and some dead trees removed to make way for the wall, the remainder of the pohutukawa must be protected. Mr. Devine said his department would be doing its best to source rocks and sand at good prices but extra costs would be involved in construction and bringing in sand for the back fill for the residents’ approved design. The two trial areas would give an idea of how much these extra costs would be.He said, once these additional costs had been established the project would need to go back before the full Whangarei District Council to gain approval for the extra expenditure. The roading department has the sum of $510,000 budgeted in the council’s Long Term Community Plan (LTCCP) for this work.

Ken Rivers, Chief Executive Officer of the New Zealand Refining Company, was guest speaker at the Ruakaka Ratepayers Annual General Meeting held on 11 May at the Ruakaka Recreation Centre. He began on a positive note. “We are currently undergoing one of the biggest shutdowns we have ever done. We only do a shutdown of this scope once every 15 years. We have 600 extra workers on site.”The shutdown is now in its last week but another smaller shutdown is due in September. Mr Rivers said the refinery had a great four or five years where the demand for oil products grew. But then the recession came along and reversed this trend. As a result refining margins had been significantly reduced. NZRC’s biggest income is from the processing fee paid by its customers, which is 70% of a notional refiners’ margin. At the start of 2009 the company had a refiners’ margin (difference between value of products and cost of crude) of $US12 on every barrel of oil it processed but by the end of the year this margin had slumped to less then a dollar a barrel. To make matters worse, the refiners’ margin is in American dollars, which fell sharply in value, so NZRC got even fewer NZ dollars. “Half way through last year the refinery had made a profit of $55 million. By the end of the year the profit had dropped to just $23.6 million, “so we lost $30 million in the second half of last year,” said Mr. Rivers. But looking at profit does not give the full picture. “The $200 million Point Forward expansion, which was completed earlier this year, grows the business by 15%. It will last more than 20 years and every year there will be a charge against profit of $10 m, but we have to pay the bills for the project when they come due – so the main challenge is having enough cash to run the business. Mr Rivers said the company had foreseen the difficult times and had prepared so has cash reserves.“We knew the high margins we were getting weren’t going to last.” He said for its size the Marsden Point refinery is “one of the best in the world.”“Its reliability is world class. It’s a 365, 24 hour a day operation. We beat the pants off the Aussies. This is the best refinery in Australasia. “In Asia Pacific there are a lot of bigger and newer refineries. Both these things mean they can operate more efficiently. And also their cost of doing business is a lot lower than New Zealand primarily due to lower labour costs and benefits.

Because of poor margins and competitive pressures, the refinery had work harder to reduce costs including reducing staff and contractor numbers on site. “At the moment refining margins are a little better than they have been. At the same time there are a lot of new refineries being built, so we are making hay while the sun shines.” In March this year the company Royal Dutch Shell sold its 17.1% share in the refinery as well as its 220 retail stations in New Zealand to Infratil and The Guardians of the NZ Superannuation..

said fuel oil for power stations and ships bunkers was exported, as the demand for this was not big enough in New Zealand. Peter Hope asked why the price of petrol at the pump doesn’t drop when the price of oil goes down. Mr. Rivers said generally crude oil prices rise before petrol prices go up and when this happens the wholesale and refining margins get squeezed. He also said that while crude oil is sold on a global market, wholesale prices are regional specific and are set by supply and demand. Retail prices can be influenced by competition (e.g. the number of petrol stations in an area), exchange rates and distributions costs. He concluded by saying that there are prospects for further significant growth at Marsden Point but the timing of these will depend on the business environment and what that means in terms of profitability and affordability.

Mr. Rivers said he was delighted to have “New Zealand cornerstone shareholders” and saw it as a big vote of confidence in NZRC to have them on board. He observed an apparent trend for major oil companies moving towards more investment in “upstream” - fossil fuel exploration and recovery, rather than downstream (refining and distribution) activities. Asked if this sell out by Shell would result in a loss of expertise amongst the NZ Refining Company’s directors, Mr. Rivers said the refinery would continue to spend “quite a lot of money each year” on a technical services agreement with Shell. Another move to make the refinery more competitive is to deepen the entrance channel for tankers coming into the refinery wharf. Mr. Rivers explained that tankers have to wait out on the bar at certain tides when there is a swell running. “The proposal is to deepen the channel so we can get bigger ships in. This will make us more efficient and the oil companies will be more likely to process crude here rather than import refined products from overseas.” He said the refinery would never be able to produce enough fuel for all NZ’s needs. “At the moment we produce 100 % of NZ’s jet oil, 80 % of the country’s diesel and 60% of its petrol requirements.” Asked if the refinery exported anything, Mr. Rivers

He said farmers would need to be on the look out for nitrate poisoning with the huge influx of fresh green grass. The long drought followed by the rain and the still warm temperatures were producing some good crops of mushrooms. “We are having some pretty good breakfasts. We are eating mushrooms eight days a week”, said Damion. Approximately 30

From Thursday May 27 the speed limit over the Brynderwyns will be reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h. The new speed limit will apply from 1.3km south of Waipu Gorge Road to the southern end of the Piroa Stream Bridge, adjacent to the Atlas Quarry – a distance of 5.9km. In the past five years there have been 79 crashes on this section of road. Three of these were fatal and two involved serious injuries. Northland Road Policing Manager, Inspector Clifford Paxton, says his officers are all too familiar with the results of driver inattention on the Brynderwyns. “In many of the crashes we are called to, motorists have not necessarily exceeded the speed limit but have been driving just too fast for the conditions,” Inspector Paxton said. He advises everyone using this section of SH1 even with the 80km/h limit, to drive to the conditions to ensure they reach their destination

safely. The speed limit on SH1 in the Dome Valley, between Wellsford and Warkworth, was lowered to 80km/h in December 2007. In the three years prior to lowering the speed limit, there were 36 crashes and seven fatalities in the Dome Valley. Since the introduction of

Bream Bay Police have been issued with three tasers guns, one for each of the district’s three police stations at Ruakaka, Waipu and Maungaturoto. All eight of Bream Bay’s police officers have undergone a day of training on the use of the new tool, which Officer in Charge Sergeant Ken Andrews said can act as a deterrent as well as an effective demobiliser. The new weapons which are being issued to Police stations all over New Zealand, come with a strict list of instructions about when they can be used:• To defend a police officer or another person from serious harm• To arrest an offender where this can’t be done in a less forceful way.• To prevent a person from seriously injuring themselves• To prevent the escape of an offender • To deter attacking animals. All of the above with the proviso that there is no less forceful means available to the officer. “We are always making the assessment”, said Sergeant Andrews. Each is fitted with a microphone and a video camera so the circumstances under which they are used can be recorded. Sergeant Andrews said Police

which carries messages from the brain to the muscles. Sergeant Andrews said a video which he watched at the training session showed an angry aggressive 140kg man falling like a stone when hit by this current. He said drugs such as methamphetamine can make some people immune to the effects of pain and physical force and pepper spray or Police batons are incapable of subduing them.. Although the taser is reputed to be very painful, it works by temporarily immobilising the person rather than the use of pain. A red dot of light beamed from the taser will target where the current will hit and can be an effective warning. The words, “Look mate, see that red light on your chest, I have a taser on you so you better put that baseball bat down” will hopefully save some future tight situation.

are happy about this surveillance measure as it protects them against charges they are using the guns inappropriately. He said taser use is a mid category between using OC spray and a firearm. We will still use firearms in situations where the offender has a firearm or a weapon which poses a serious risk. The taser is one step down from a firearm and has the advantage that its effects are not usually fatal. The Police are also required to take care of every individual they use this weapon against and to get him or her checked by a doctor as soon as practicable. The technical term for a taser is Electrical Muscular Incapacitator. They fire copper darts which imbed in the targets clothing and carry an electric shock which has the effect of temporarily breaking the electric current

Bream Bay’s school communities have elected Boards of Trustees for Bream Bay College and the area’s three primary schools for the next three years. Glenice Andrews, Chris Donald, Peter Dunn, Jenny Gibbs, Graham Hargreaves, Rick Stolwerk and Louise Wickham take the seven places on the board at Bream Bay College. Of these, Peter Dunn and Glenice Andrews are the only sitting members although Louise Wickham, Rick Stolwerk and Graham Hargreaves have all served on the Waipu Primary school board and Chris Donald has served for the past five years on the Ruakaka Primary. Board. Chris Donald and Jenny Gibbs, both of Ruakaka, are the only Bream Bay College board parent representatives who do not live in Waipu. Rick Stolwerk, Louis Wickham and Glenice Andrews are also members of the new Waipu Primary board, Glenice in the capacity of staff representative and Louise as a co-opted member to help with the transition to the new board. The Waipu Primary School board election was the most hotly contested with eight candidates putting their names forward for five positions. The successful candidates were: Donna Blaber, Carl Gordon, Rick Stolwerk, Peter van Cingel and Anthony Uphof. Of these Carl Gordon is the only person to have served on the school’s previous board. Along with Louise, John Draper a member of the previous board, has also been co-opted on to help with the transition. At Ruakaka Primary there were seven nominations for five places on the board. Adrienne Carswell, Francida Doak, Bruce Paton, Tracy Somner and Marcia Underwood were the winning candidates. All but Tracy Somner and Adrienne Carswell served on the previous Ruakaka Board. One Tree Point Primary received five nominations for five positions on its board, so Bridget Armour, Denis Garner, Fiona Heiwari, James Miller and Nick Monsen were declared elected.

Nominations called for Civic Honours awards

The Whangarei District Council is seeking nominations for its 2010 Civic Honours Awards. This award recognises the contribution of citizens who have served the community through a sustained voluntary effort for a number of years. Each potential candidate must be nominated by at least two people who will need to put together information about their candidate to help the district councillors on the Civic Honours Selection Panel make their decision. The closing date for nominations is 23 June.

Burglaries on the rise Theo Wortelboer was just returning to Ruakaka from a holiday in Australia on the evening of at around 6pm on Monday 10 May when he noticed someone was in his Ruakaka motors shop on the corner of Marsden Point and Sime Rd. He stopped to investigate and found his mechanic Paul Laurence had responded to the alarm going off. Would - be burglars had attempted to force open the roller door at the back of the shop but apparently been frightened away by the alarm. Last April Theo lost approximately $16,000 worth of goods when someone broke into his shop and since then he has had the security upgraded. “I think it might of just about payed for itself”, he said. “Mind you they buggered the door and that’s going to cost a bit to fix.” Constable Anthony Rogers had responded to Paul’s callout and was taking down the details of the damaged door when he received a phone call to another attempted break in at the Ruakaka Medical Centre. This was another failed at-tempt as Dr. John Chapman was working late that evening and frightened the burglar away. Around the same time the door of a shed at the Educare Centre in Takutai Place was forced open but nothing was taken and two cars parked out-side the Ruakaka Recreation Centre were broken into with an ipod and a digital camera stolen from one of these. The medical centre’s security camera took a photo of the offender but unfor-tunately the light was dim and this was of poor quality and the police cannot positively identify the person, although they have their suspicions. There was a daytime burglary at the Marsden Point Rd. depot of Lawsons Cartage on Friday 14 May. Craig Lawson had briefly left the site to take his dog for a walk on the beach and when he returned found someone had tried to force open the back window of his utility vehicle and taken some new tie downs from the back canopy. The burglar had also stolen approximately $100 from his office. Ann Lawson, the office manager, said that in future no cash would be left on the premises.Serjeant Ken Andrews said burglaries are on the rise in Bream Bay and through-out the whole Whangarei district. He attributes this rise to unemployment and drug use, as methamphetamine is very expensive. He said there is a very good team working on burglaries in Whangarei and last week after the arrest of one individual the rate of burglaries in Whangarei dropped by half, which shows how active a single burglar can be.

A Rakatau Place resident received a nasty shock when she walked into her lounge room to dis-cover her firewood stock on the floor beside the hearth well alight. Ruakaka firefighters were called at around 10am to the ‘house on fire’, arriving to see smoke billowing out from doors and windows. Priority one was to ensure no one was in the house, and this was established immediately as the owner was located safely watching her house burn from a neighbouring property. An extra appliance from Waipu Brigade was called in right at the start for back up in case: (A) not enough volunteers arrived to man both Ruakaka fire appliances, and (B) the scenario of it being a bigger fire and possibility of fire spread to neighbouring houses. Happily for all concerned, a full turnout took place and the scene was well covered. On my first scene survey, I hoped that the fire could be dealt to with a fire extinguisher which

Quick response by fire brigades saves house

would have saved much water damage, but that proved fruitless as the fire had taken hold, meaning firefighters wearing breathing apparatus had to use a high pressure hose to extinguish the flames. It is suspected that the fire came as a result of a spark or heat from a couple of logs from the previous night’s fire which had been laid on the hearth ready for reburning that morning, had come in contact with a wicker basket containing paper, fire light-ers and matches etc, which in turn caught the stacked new firewood beside the fire place on fire. It seemed ironic that the stacked firewood was blazing away beauti-fully on the floor and up the wall right beside a fully contained fireplace which was also quietly and innocently blazing away. The house itself was smoke logged and smoke alarms were beeping away through-out.Those smoke alarms could have saved the resident’s life had she been sleeping when the fire took place, and Fire Safety Officer Terry Baylis offered to revisit the house after insurance repairs were carried out to relocate alarms in appropriate posi-tions once again. What did we learn from this near tragedy?Look at how close you have paper and firewood stored to the fireplace. It seems that everyone I have spoken to since the incident has a cane basket, card-board box or wooden box near the fire with kindling wood, paper or fire lighting equipment in it (and that includes me, a fire fighter and fire safety advocate!) How about having a tidy up and move that stuff further away from the fireplace, well clear of radiated heat and possibility of sparks.Because our victim speedily dialed 111 and the fire brigade responded quickly, the

house suffered minimal burning and smoke dam-age.With winter now upon us, it seems, it is time to have those chimneys swept, and all your safety plans in place. Smoke alarms should be checked and fresh batteries fitted if nec-essary, electric blankets should be checked, gutters cleaned out of leaves and debris, fireplaces cleaned and checked for cracks and leaks. The annual Northland vs North Harbour Development match, hosted by Northland, was played at Waipu Golf Club in almost perfect conditions on Sunday 2nd May 2010 with Waipu junior golf stalwarts Neville and Sharon Cockayne, taking care of all the starting, scoreboard and organising the catering .The team advised by North Harbour had a handicap range from 4.6 to 10.2 for boys and 2.3 to 24.7 for girls. As a result, Northland’s top juniors (Kadin and Komene Neho, Lee Neumann and Sean Masters) were omitted from the team. Four Bream Bay boys: Chase McKeown, Thomas Neylon, Braden Keown and Ben Hessell were included in the boy’s team. Some thoughts from Jeff D’Ath of the Ruakaka Fire Brigade

Who turns up to your fires when 111 has been dialed in a small country town?I was thinking this as we barreled along mid week under lights and sirens to the Rakatau Place fire.My crews on the day evolved something like this;I was there purely because I was on holiday and at home instead of being at work in Whangarei. My driver/pump operator was a local farmer, who responded instead of feeding out hay to his cows.#1 fireman in the back of the appliance was a school boy from Bream Bay Col-lege ( especially released from class by a generous teacher/headmaster) who has recently completed his 7 day intensive fire training course in Rotorua. He is one of two Bream Bay students who make up our Ruakaka fire fighting team#2 fire fighter was another local farm worker whose employer has allowed him to drop what he’s doing on the farm (within reason) to attend any fire call dur-ing working hours. The second Ruakaka Fire appliance had a Whangarei Fire Safety Officer ( our own brigade member, who just happened to be in the area), a retired career fire fighter who carries on serving as a ‘volly’, a metal worker from an NSP in Waipu (generously allowed by his employers at their cost to leave work for emergencies such as this), and a Refining company fire fighter enjoying an off shift break (yeah right!!).The Waipu Fire appliance had a local business owner who had “shut the doors” of his workshop to attend, and he also had a fire crew of similar Waipu people to those described above. If those people weren’t ‘there that day’, how would the community have got on with a fully blown house fire? Waiting for the paid fire fighters from Whangarei to respond (30 minutes later) would have meant a house destroyed, as well as neighbouring properties perhaps. The point of this message? Our Fire Brigades are “VOLUNTEER” brigades. No one gets paid (or wants to), but are repaid with the opportunity and pleasure of doing stuff for the com-munity. They come from all walks of life and make themselves available when-ever they can.

Whose the Fire fighter?

Three minutes after the brigade arrived. The fire in April 2009 at the Bream Bay Community Support Trust.

This year we have worked to recruit extra players and as a subsequence we are field-ing a 1st and a 2nd Division team as well as a womens team. The 1st division team is made up of most of last years team and the 2nd division team is a mix of college youth with some old hands to bring on field experience. When both teams hit their straps there is not much between them. With the two teams we have the option of playing players up and down and as subs as well. This can drop extra skill into the 2nd Division and bring some youth up into the 1st Division. At this stage the 1st Division have won all their matches and drawn one, and are on top of the Northland 1st Table. The 2nd Division, although dropping their first game, have won all the rest and are also on top of the 2nd Division table. This is a great start for the club and the 1st Division race looks to be a two club af-fair between us and Kaeo FC.The 2nd Division will be tough as we have matches still to come against Kamo and Madhatters Black who are sitting on the table directly below us. The women’s team is a new team after a long absence from local football and as such we are in a rebuilding phase. We lost the first three games including a 12-0 loss to a physical Bay Cosmos Kawakawa side but as the players have started to find their feet and confidence their skill level has started to improve. As a result they have won their last two games and if they can beat Northern Wairoa women in their next match it will put us third on the Northland 1st Division women’s table. It is the beginning of the 2010 season but it looks very promising for the Bream Bay Club.

A promising start to the season for Bream Bay United seniors

Looks as though winter is here. Us chickens, who have been enjoying dry condi-tions, have quickly become ducks having to compete in rain and wind again. Still can’t complain, the golf course is looking greener and the grass is growing. Our greens are still the best around and have been all summer, thanks to our greens staff. The 9 Hole Sue Bunt Salver was won this year by Rita Llewellyn. Well done Rita. Rita’s cards now will be forwarded, to compete against other 9 Holersto find the best nett scores for this competition in Northland. Good Luck Rita.27.4.10 - NettJudy Sloane 74 c/b Robyn Price 74, Julie Gordon, Marlene Ogle, Bronnie Reynolds 76, Elizabeth Powell 77, Sharon Cockayne 784.5.10 Our Waipu Ladies visited the Pines Golf Club to contest both the 9 Hole and 18 Hole Trophies which have been held by the Pines Ladies for some time. Our 9 Holers narrowly lost the trophy by the smallest of margins and our 18 Holers returned their trophy to Waipu. Well done. It was pleasing to see so many Waipu players at the Pines and all enjoying the friendship of our 2 Clubs.11.5.10 & 18.5.10Our Nancy McCormick Foursomes was played over 2 days with round 1 played in rain and wind and round 2 in lovely conditions.Round 1 was won by Catherine Jenkins and Kathy Cogan with a nett 79, followed closely by Dulcie Leech and Jeanette Kerr with a nett 79.5Round 2 was once again won by Catherine and Kathy having a nett 74, followed by Pat Fowler and Ilsa Alison having a nett 79. Catherine and Kathy won the overall competition with a 153 nett, Judy Sloane and Raewyn Nash with a nett 164, were runners up.11.5.10 9 Holers - PuttingShona Nathan-Sim was the winner for the day with 14 putts followed by Mavis Wright 15 and Joyce Roberts 16The Waipu Team contesting the National Teams Northland final at Whangaroa were Robyn Price, Bronwyn Reynolds, Julie Gordon and Rita Finlayson. Unfortunately after 9 holes the competition was called off due to adverse weather and is to be re-played at a later date. Our Pennants Teams did well in Northern Wairoa recently. Waipu 1 had 79 pts against Northern Wairoa 65 pts, playing on their own course.Waipu 2 also did well 73pts against Wellsford 71. Our Weekend Team has shot in to a 10 pt lead with 3 rounds to go, so good luck Ladies.Waipu has started Sunday golf. This is a 9 hole Mixed Haggle with the Tee Open 11.30am - 1pm. Brunch is available at our Cafe from 11am. This is a fun day so bring your visitors along and have fun.

On 14th May 45 members enjoyed a mystery outing to Waitangi Treaty House and Museum. They called in for morning tea at “Round the Bend” Cafe at Towai and lunched at the Waikokopu Cafe., then spent the afternoon at the museum and in the beautiful grounds. They were lucky to have a fine warm day. The trip was subsidised by a Lotteries Grant.

The Two Bird Café

A mother and daughter team Katie and Wendy Gray have taken over what was Smackers Café in the Ruakaka Town Centre and have renamed it The Two Bird Café. Katie is a qualified chef and has worked in some of Auckland’s restaurants such as The Grove and Meredith’s. She has recently returned from London where she worked in a bistro restaurant in Hampshire. She and her mother decided they would like to go into partnership with a café. “It’s something Mum has always wanted to do”, said Katie. Wendy spotted the Ruakaka café for sale and it was a lot more affordable than similar businesses for sale in Auckland. Last week Wendy was having lessons on how to make a perfect coffee. Katie said eventually they might try running a restaurant in the evenings but for the moment want to get into a good routine with the café.
