Mr. Innes told the meeting that he saw Waipu as being at a crossroads. He said post recession we are going to be in a different environment and communities will have to pull together. There had been substantial development in Mangawhai and Ruakaka which all “looked pretty much the same.” He said it was important to try to create an identity and the key was for the com- munity to take ownership rather than to just wait for whatever developments come along. He urged Waipu residents not to rely on regulations but to look at what initiatives they could undertake collectively to enhance the main street of the town. He said that while in New Zealand the trend is for local governments to get bigger in America towns and communities tended to stay as independent small units. Richie Guy said what Mr. Innes was saying “makes a lot of sense” and “a co-ordi- nated approach” was needed to implement these ideas. He suggested an umbrella group be formed. WAIPU BOUTIQUE SUNDAY MARKET AND CAFÉ

Marilyn

Out on a jog around the local roads this morning I was questioned by a young man leaning out the window of his BMW. “Is this the Waipu Caves?” he asked. He had just pulled out of my neighbour Les McKenzie’s driveway in Applecross Rd., which is where his GPS had told him the caves were. In the back seat were two children with headlights strapped to their foreheads. They both had with that fed up, “are we there yet?” expression on their faces. I was able to point them in the right direction and, hopefully, when they walked down into that underworld chamber with its dripping limestone walls, high ceiling, hanging pink stalactites, glow worms and strange echoes they found their roundabout trip worthwhile. “Are there signposts?” was another question the young man asked and this was one I couldn’t answer. I know the way and I don’t look around for signposts. Next time I go up to the caves I will be putting myself in the shoes of someone who hasn’t been here before and watching out for them. The committee formed out of the Making the Most of our Town meeting two weeks ago will be looking at ways of promoting Waipu and giving visitors to the town a reason to stay and to return. Being considerate and welcoming to people who are visiting is surely a good start. It’s surprising how many places don’t look after their visitors with good easy to follow directions. Whenever I have to go to the Auckland airport I

find it easy to follow those aeroplane pictures with arrows at all the intersections and this is a good example of effective, helpful signage. Coming back however is another matter. I must have been to the airport dozens of times but I am still trying to work out the most direct route back to the northern motorway. I invariably get lost and end up in Ponsonby or Onehunga or Blockhouse Bay. Don’t the Auckland road signage people understand that most of us who drive to the airport have to drive home again at some stage? My brain always gets a bit overactive when I go for a morning jog and I’m thinking, someone could design a smiley glowworm graphic which could direct people up to the caves and then a little tartan coffee cup symbol could direct them back to Waipu. Also we could do with an informative brochure telling people what they need to bring – torches, gumboots – what you should be wary of – heavy rain, how the caves were formed. It is incredible to think that those high hills were once under the sea and all that limestone rock formed by living sea creatures millions of years ago. The life cycle of glow-worms would easily fill one page. The more you learn about a place the more fascinating it becomes. There is a lot of work to be done around this “Making the Most of our Town” proposal.

How about some smiley glow worms pointing the way to the caves?

Red the winning colour at Bream Bay College swimming sports

The red house Inverness came top of the points table at the Bream Bay College swimming sports held at the beginning of the school year on Friday 3 February as it has for the past few year. The other three school houses Argyle - green, Sutherland - blue and Ross - yellow get a chance to catch up at the Athletics Sports day, which

The roll at One Tree Point Primary on the first week of school for 2012 was 185. This is slightly down on last year’s start of term roll (193) but up on the previous year - 181. Val Klink the school’s office person said some families have advised the school that their children won’t be back until after Waitangi weekend, so the numbers may have gone up a bit on Tuesday 7 February. The Ruakaka Primary roll was 141 which is just one child short of its highest ever start of year roll – 142 in 2010 and up by up by 12 on last year when the count was 130. The Waipu Primary starting roll for 2012 was 193, down by 25 on its 2011 roll which was an all time record. Principal Paul Ramsay said, a few families have left for Australia or Auckland in search of work. “In the last term of last year we lost around 22 children as their families moved away.”The school’s board of trustees has decided to fund an extra teacher this year to give the school 11 full time teachers, so class sizes are small. The Bream Bay College roll is 467, an increase of 17 on last year’s starting roll, but not quite as high as the 2010 starting, which was 476.

will be held next week on Friday 17 February. Pictured celebrating the Inverness victory are from left: Cameron Bartlett, year 8 aged 12, Kieran Swords, year 9, Myra Van den Bergen, year 13 and teachers Ju-

In answer to Grant McCullum’s letter in the 12 January 2012 edition of the Bream Bay News concerning the testing at One Tree Point, as the Chairman of the Northland Regional Council I too was at a loss as to why the sign referred to was where it was and so asked for an explanation from staff. Here is the explanation for the sign’s existence:• The Northland Regional Council (NRC) holds a pre-season meeting with all councils and Northland Health where sites for testing and signage are agreed. This was done as usual in 2011. • One Tree Point is not one of our usual shellfish sites and as such analysis is for bathing bacterial indicators only and does not cover shellfish. • The Whangarei District Council (WDC) will have to explain why the sign referred to shellfish as well as bathing quality. • The One Tree Point site referred to is typically very good with the result on 28 December being the only bad result this season. • NRC regularly gets spikes at coastal bathing sites and to ensure information is the best that it can be we promote next day sampling by WDC when we receive bad results. If the second sample is clear the sign is not required. • For this season NRC has been doing follow up sampling for WDC due to resourcing issues. Unfortunately, due to the timing between Christmas and New Year, we

were not able to resample on this occasion and hence a warning sign went up as a precautionary measure. Where re-sampling cannot be undertaken it has been agreed by all parties that a sign will go up. We prefer to be safe rather than sorry. • The site in question was where the sample was taken and it was considered that the water in only close proximity would have been temporarily outside the bathing standard. • It is debatable as to how many sites along any one beach should be tested, but in general the One Tree Point area rarely fails the safety standards. It is unfortunate that the writer of the letter to your paper had not phoned me. The moment I read this article I obtained this information. It is appropriate that the signs will be placed by the district council immediately upon NRC obtaining poor results. These signs will only appear at the area where the water has been tested and fails to meet the required standard. I hope this helps clarify the issue. The people of One Tree Point were quite safe swimming and collecting shellfish.

EYE HEALTH AND NUTRITION

As an eye care practicioner I tend to

concentrate on eye health independently

from other physical factors in my

patients. However eye health can be

strongly influenced by our diet and

general health and we should all think of

eye sight problems as not just “eyeball”.

The eyes are not only the window to the

soul but are also a mirror of the body.

Lutein and ZeaxanthinThese are the major components of a

special protective pigment found in eyes.

It filters harmful

blue and UV light,

protecting our

high-resolution

vision from

damage. The

density of these

pigments diminash with age and this is

thought to explain Age-related macular

degeneration (AMD). We get them

only from our diet, and are found in

abundance in dark, leafy greens such as

spinach, kale and moderately plentiful in

vegtables such as capsicum, corn and

broccoli. There is mounting evidence

that increasing our intake can increase

our macular pigment density and help

protect our eyes.

Omega 3I know I've talked about omega 3

previously in relation to dry eye but

there's mounting

evidence that omega

3's anti-imflametory

properties can be

benificial in allergy,

AMD, glaucoma as

well. The western diet tends to have too

much omega 6 and not enough omega 3.

When omega 6 is metabolised in the

body it produces pro-inflametory

mediators, where as omega 3's

metabolites tend to be anti-imflametory

mediators. So without enough omega 3

in our diet inflamation is encouraged.

SupplimentsThere is good evidence to show that

suppliments can be benificial in

balancing our diets. Other experts

suggest changing our diet to include

more fresh vegtables, nuts and oily fish

and reducing the amount of processed

and fried foods is a better option. Some

suppliments can be dangerous if taken in

conjunction with other medications or in

heavy smokers, so I recommend

discussing with an expert before you

start taking high dose suppliments.

I don’t profess to be an expert on

nutrition however after a thorough eye

examination I will be able to give you

some suggestions of where to start.

The arrival of David Wilson of Oamaru on his penny-farthing bicycle seemed like a happy accident considering a meeting in the Coronation Hall the previous week which drew a crowd of 86 people called together under the banner – “Making the most of our town.”David is riding the

length of New Zealand – he started on Stewart Island on 12 November - and along the way he is promoting Oamaru, where he is captain of the Oamaru Ordinary Cycles Club. Penny-farthings were the first bicycles made and ridden before the machines with two wheels of the same size, which were originally called safety bicycles. David’s bike is a replica of an 1882 model. The Oamaru Ordinary Cycles Club (OOCC) has 30 members and holds an annual Penny- farthing Race Day as part of the town’s Victorian heritage celebrations. David is also the founder and director of an organization called Heritage Futures International, which is all about helping small towns and communities to preserve and make use of their heritage. On his tour he has visited most of New Zealand’s small towns and he says Waipu is one of the nicest.“It must be a privilege to live here.” He was given free accommodation in a camper bus at the Waipu Hotel and looked through the Waipu Museum with museum manager Patsy Montgomery. Another reason for his Stewart Island to Cape Reinga ride is that “no-one has done it before.”“And I can understand why”, he said. He manages to ride up gentle inclines but has to get off and push whenever he comes to a real hill and he is finding out there are plenty of these in Northland. He wears the uniform of the OOCC, which incorporates the Black Watch tartan. Out on the road he puts on a high visibility vest and a helmet. Three days into his ride he crashed and ripped his trousers but, luckily for him, the seamstress, who made them lived just down the road from where the accident happened and he was able to get them repaired. They are however wearing a bit thin around the crotch. He is travelling without a support crew – just a sleeping bag, a change of clothes and a beautiful, leather bound log book which he had made by a traditional book binder in Oamaru which he will gift to his daughters. All this is held in canvas pannier bags strapped to his bicycle. The girls are, aged 16 and 17, and are mortified that there father is out on the highways of New Zealand wearing such ridiculous clothes. “I don’t care about that at all”, says David.

Kyla Mansell, aged 2 of Waipu, got to look at the view from the high seat of David Wilson’s pennyfarthing bicycle.

Early in 2008 the Bream Bay News published a story about Hayden Prujean and his mid life change of career from operations manager at Irwin Industrial Tools in Wellsford to setting up his own coffee roasting and blending business in a garden shed at

his rural property in Mangawhai with the support of his wife Emma. Four years on and Hayden and Emma’s Rush Coffee brand has won two gold medals and two silvers at the biannual New Zealand Coffee awards, more than any other coffee roaster in New Zealand. In the 2011/2012 awards Hayden and Emma took gold medals for theWe have spent several years perfecting coffee blends that we personally love. Fortunately for Rush, others share the same tastes! We use state-of-the-art technology and are continually trial roasting current crop and new coffees to refine the blends.”Has it been difficult to get this new business established?“We underestimated how hard it is to start a business and a brand from scratch in a very crowded market. It is not enough to just have a great product – it is the 5% inspiration 95% perspiration formula. We spent 18 months researching, and then one year getting the business set up and are now just going in to our fifth year of trading. We focused on establishing a loyal, local customer base.” The Rush Coffee business is now supporting them both, paying its way and growing. Asked if they would be using their success at the coffee roasting competition as a springboard to market the brand nationally, Hayden replied, “Although we do have a reasonably large on-line national sales business through our website, our focus is on the local market – between Whangarei and Orewa, as we are committed to supplying coffee fresh. We personally deliver to all cafes and retailers weekly. If a bag of coffee in a retailer is more than three weeks past roast date – we replace it with fresh. In Bream Bay Rush coffee is now stocked at Ruakaka’s SuperValue supermarket as well as The Big Tomato, SeaChange café at Ruakaka beach, and in Waipu at The Garden Gate and the Four Square supermarket.

After 22 years as Waipu’s Presbyterian Minister, the Reverend Peter Dunn and his family were farewelled by the con-gregation at a special church service and BBQ on Tuesday 24 January. Speaking at the service, Church member and former elder Bruce Matheson said “We are sorry to see you go Peter and Helen but you have received a call from God has led you to Invercargill and he will bless you as you move there to be-gin a new ministry. He spoke of how Peter had been in-volved with the church’s youth group.“Just after he arrived he was keen to have a bonfire down on the beach at Uretiti for the youth and he wanted me to bring my truck down with some firewood. I said I couldn’t do this as the truck would get stuck as it was all soft sand down there but he said he had a vehicle with a winch to pull it out. Sure enough the truck got stuck and just as he said he winched it out. Bruce said Peter’s preaching had always been Bible - based but he had brought things out in the reading to relate to what had happened in his life. “Even when he had had a hard week we were given a real sermon from the word of God that was uplifting and led us forward.” Peter had run the Alpha course encouraging people to become Christians. He had been instrumental in the purchase of the Crossroads building in the Waipu main street (where the toy library is housed) for the price of just $22,000.He had been the minister for the Caledonian Society and had conducted many services for this organization. “ANZAC services really came alive since Peter has been taking them. He focuses on a per-son in the community and how his life was affected by war”, said Bruce. Wayne Buckland, Principal of Bream Bay College told how Peter had served on the col-lege Board of Trustees from 2001 to 2012 and, for all but one of those years, he had been the board’s chairman. Prior to this he had spent nine years as board of trustee chairman of Waipu Primary School. “He demonstrated his commitment to education and helped to polish the jewels that are our children.

In reply to a query from the Bream Bay News about why, after a serious crash on State Highway One on the Brynderwyn hill on Wednesday 18 January, traffic travelling both northwards and southwards along SH1 was diverted on to Gorge Rd. Ewart Barnsley the New Zealand Transport Authority’s media spokesman said, “The NZTA (New Zealand Transport Authority) and its contractors are reviewing the response to this crash and will work with emergency services to implement any necessary improvements.”,The Waipu Gorge Rd diversion was implemented despite a management plan, which states that vehicles travelling in one direction should be diverted through Mangawhai, while those travelling in the opposite direction should go along the Paparoa/Oakleigh route. Gorge Rd., which is very winding and narrow is not an approved diversion route. While the diversion was in place two vehicles collided on Gorge Rd., with one carrying four passengers ending upside down in the river. Noone was seriously injured but Waipu Fire Chief Trevor Vaile is concerned that there could easily have been more serious consequences. Mr. Barnsley explained that “When the NZTA’s contractors arrived at this crash scene, a diversion through Waipu Gorge had already been establish by police and the NZTA’s contractors helped police operate this established detour. However, when a crash did occur on the gorge detour, the NZTA’s contractors began establishing a detour through the approved Paparoa/Oakleigh route. While preparing to redirect traffic on to this route, the contractors were advised by Police that SH1 across the Brynderwyns had been reopened.”Mr. Vaile commented that, even if the Police had already established the Gorge Rd. diversion, the NZTA contractors should have immediately put the approved diversions in place. He said when the Waipu Fire Brigade arrived at the first accident, a single woman was in place diverting traffic from the bottom of the Brynderwyns at the southern side. “They (the NZTA contractors) seem to always be slow to arrive on the scene.” He said the Waipu Fire Brigade had requested a meeting with NZTA, the contracting company, which looks after traffic diversions and the police. No date had yet been set for

this meeting but Mr. Vaile expects it to held sometime this month.

“It has been a pleasure to have Julie, Ben, Alice, Tabatha and Joshua (the five Dunn chil-dren) at the college. “We had a $200,000 cash deficit when Peter started as chair and now we have a working capital surplus. He was one of the leaders in the field of restorative justice and had made presentations on this both nationally and internationally”Jamie McGregor of the Caledonian Society presented Peter with a ceremonial quaich (Scot-tish two handled drinking vessel) for his services to the society and church deacon Louise Wickham presented a bunch of flowers to Helen and a painting of a Northland beach scene to them both. “We thought you might need something to remind you of Northland in the Invercargil win-ter,” said Louise.Peter Dunn replied, “Thank you very much Waipu. Not just the church, but also the whole community has been very good for us. You can’t spend twenty-two years in a place and not come away with more than a canvas.”Both Peter and Helen have elderly parents who live in Invercargill and Gore and three of their five children now live in the South Island. Former Church elder Honore McAulay said a new Presbyterian minister for Waipu has not been appointed yet. “There is a procedure to go through and it could take several months or a number of years.”In the meantime the oversight of the Waipu church lies with an “interim moderator”, in this case the Presbyterian Minister of Wellsford. Waipu services will be taken by visiting speak-ers and lay preachers within the church.

Head Scavenger, Yvonne Judge, asks that people who intend to drop things off , phone in first to see if Scavengers can take what they are offering. “We don’t want any old computers or TV sets. It costs us $15 to get rid of each of these”, she said. Also the shed out the back where big furniture is stored

is crammed full, so at present, Scavengers doesn’t want any more beds, lounge suites or tables. What the shop does need are glass jars, which can be used for jams and pickles and old ice cream containers. Scavengers is open from 10.30am to 3pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The shop’s phone number is: 433 0252. After hours Yvonne can be contacted on 432 7051.

Banking expertise with a community touch forRuakaka locals

Westpac Ruakaka customers are reaping the benefits of banking experience and knowledge, underpinned by a strong local community focus.Bank Manager Sarah Goffin brings

with her four years’ Westpac banking experience, having worked in a variety of roles from a part-time teller through to her current role leading the Westpac Ruakaka team.

“I’ve held a number of positions over the years and have more than 20 years’ customer service experience,” says Sarah. “Within our team we have 60 years of banking experience, and we’re all involved in the community and committed to helping our customers.”

This connection and understanding of the community, combined with a thorough knowledge of all things financial, means Sarah and her team are well placed to provide expert advice and assistance to customers.

“At Westpac Ruakaka we’re committed to creating a friendly comfortable bank environment,” says Sarah. “Communication and respect are really important to us and we pride ourselves on our fantastic customer service.

“This means delivering exceptional service for both existing and potential customers, and providing banking solutions that meet individual and/orbusiness needs.”

And like Westpac teams all over the country, Sarah and the Ruakaka team are involved in community initiatives and activities, including fundraising for the bank’s annual Chopper Appeal, activities with schools and other groups, and beach clean ups.

“As we live locally, we’re keen to support activities in the area,” says Sarah. “Bream Bay is a unique, close-knit district, and we really enjoy helping our customers and getting out and about in the community.”

WEAVING SCOTTISH SONGS INTO A NEW ZEALAND WAR

written and directed byJacqueline Coats

A play about Scottish immigrants coming to Waipu“An intimate story of two Scottish im-migrants to New Zealand during the time of the First World War” is how the press release puts it. A play simply entitled “Home” will be coming to Waipu’s Coronation Hall on Sunday 26 Febru-ary at 4pm. Tickets cost $20 and can be booked at The Thistle or purchased at the door. ‘Home’ premiered at the Wellington Fringe Festival in 2010 and has toured twice since then. “Audiences throughout New Zealand have responded with laughter, tears and a strong connection to the history in the show. For many audience members the story evokes powerful memories of parents and grandparents who lived through the great wars,” says the press release. Writer director Jacqueline Coats uses diary entries, letters and songs “to shed light on how Scottish immigrants brought their own identity, hopes and values to new lives in New Zealand.” “We very much wanted to come to Waipu because of its strong Scottish herit-age”, said Rowena Simpson one of the performers of the Wellington - based theatre co-operative Single Malt, which is touring this show. The tour also includes Auckland and Hamilton.

“It’s wonderful having the new scrap metal yard next door,” said Yvonne Judge of Scavengers. She is grateful for a place to offload a lot of stuff she gets left that nobody wants to buy. She pointed down the road to where there is a yard filled with intriguing piles of old bicycles, fridges, washing machines and tractors. I thought the Bream Bay News had better investigate. The G.Abernethy Demolition and Recycling Ltd. scrap metal yard in Kepa Rd., it turns out, is not that new. It’s been there 17 months already. The Abernethy company is a family business based in Onehunga. Six years ago Janine and Gordon Abernethy bought a holiday home in One Tree Point and two years ago decided they would like to move up here permanently. They wondered whether there was an opening for a scrap metal yard in Ruakaka. They decided to give it a try and took over the yard next door to Macsways’ in October 2010. The business has boomed away ever since. “It’s been great”, said Janine. “We are starting to feel

like part of the community and not just Aucklanders coming up in the weekends.”They wondered at first if all the car batteries, car bodies, old fridges and washing machines, brass, copper etc., people were bringing in would dry up after a few months but they have just keep coming. The surrounding district is likely to be looking a bit tidier these days as people can exchange old cars and white ware for cash. Janine points out the business is also putting money back into the local economy. Gordon has been in the scrap metal trade for over 30 years. There is quite a bit to know. The metal gets sorted not just into its different types, but also into different categories. There are four or five different grades of copper, brass and aluminium. You need to keep a watch on the fluctuating world wide metal market. The world economy has a huge bearing on what recycled metal is worth. Each day prices are written on a blackboard display in the yard. Scrap metal dealers have to be licensed.

“We just don’t go near anything that looks a bit dodgy”, says Janine. Everyone selling them something is required to show a driver’s licence and provide the registration number of their car. Their Onehunga business is too profitable to give up just at present, so Janine and Gordon still spend most of the week in Auckland and have employed John Keating to manage the Ruakaka yard for them. They are in the process of buying a small truck with HIAB so John can drive around and pick up old cars. Big loads of metal will get taken to the weighbridge just down the road so the vendor can be assured of a fair price. The metal all gets cut up by a big guillotine that looks like the beak of a giant bird or crushed into tight little parcels in a press. It is trucked to Auckland where it is sold for recycling. Around 90% of the ferrous metal goes to Pacific Steel and is recycled into reinforcing bars for the local construction market. The non-ferrous metal is exported mostly to Asian markets in China, Japan, India or Korea. What is the strangest thing Gordon has ever been asked to turn into scrap? He was once given 30 brand new Toyota cars to cut up. They had been flooded by salt water on the voyage to New Zealand. He has started a collection of brass objects – cats,

rabbits, dogs, geese and vases on a shelf in the workshop. On another wall is the beginnings of a collection of the manufacturers nameplates from some of the items that get brought in. Down at the Onehunga yard there is a big collection and the wall in the Ruakaka yard is just starting to look interesting. So far, there are plates from Nuffield and David Brown tractors displayed alongside a very ornate brass toilet roll holder.

Ms car accidents 10 The lowest number for 10 years with an average of just less than one per month. The roundabout by Gasoline Alley on SH1 still amazes us all with the excellent effect it has had preventing car accidents and road deaths. A continued high exposure of police on our highways has also contributed to a new culture of sensible cruising speeds and behaviour.Scrub/rubbish fires 11 lowest in 8 years. 52 calls less than last year. Community members are putting work in to clear risky scrub especially before the dry season and this really helps. Our resident fire starter has dropped below the radar which will make many residents feel much more comfortable, but we ask you all to remain vigilant and don’t hesitate to report suspicious behaviour to Police.Early warning to the Fire dept is crucial. Don’t be afraid to dial 111 if you suspect a non controlled scrub fire. Tell your council if there are areas of major risk or concern.Structure fires 13 Our second biggest ever year with average of one structure fire of some sort per month. A structure can be anything from a letterbox to a full blown house fire. We continue to push the need for everyone to have at least two smoke alarms (with good batteries) strategically located on the ceiling of family homes.Mobile property/car fires 6. One of our highest years with a call every two months. In many cases, these are stolen cars, torched by the thieves in the hope of destroying evidence. Medical callsbac amblance 13 By far our biggest year in this area with over a medical call a month. Many of these calls are due to the fact our local ambulances are already tied up on jobs and we assist until they or a Whangarei ambulance can respond. Many people tend to scratch their heads when the big red truck appears when they desperately wanted an ambulance, but we do carry basic first aid equipment and skills to assist until the “guns” arrive.Floodin assistance 11 That was our second biggest year of flood rescue/assistance calls. Flooding seems to be coming more and more regular over the last few years highlighting the need to keep gutters and drains cleaned out to help move rising water levels as quickly as possible.False alarms 31 Made up of defective alarm apparatus, good intent calls from public and malicious false alarms, this was by far the biggest year of false alarms. With steady industrial growth in the area, this statistic can be expected to a degree, but as we say, an early call to what may be a non event is way better than a late call to a big fire..

2011 has also been a period of time when some of our members have moved on, out of the area, or into different work roles in the community making their firefighting no longer possible, or just retired to enjoy some “time back” to themselves. We had seven members leave in 2011, of which two moved to Australia, one retirement after over 30 years service, three left due to work commitments, and one left the area, . We were happy to welcome five new firefighters in 2011(including a young lady) who are all relishing their new role, as well as three operational support people Our membership numbers have dropped though so the search for fresh members, or previous firefighters who remember the thrill and are interested in returning, is all on.If you live within five kms of the Fire Station at Ruakaka and would like an information pack on what is involved, please call me. Our prime aim is to attract people who could respond during work hours, but I will be happy to talk to anyone who is interested.

Two Bream Bay dance teachers have joined forces. Jackie Boyd and Krystal Williams –Tuhoro are now working together under the banner of Krystal’s Pulse dance school and offering lessons in a range of dance styles including: tap, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, musical theatre and hip hop. The pair said they want to promote dance in Bream Bay and hold competitions and talent quests here rather than always having to go to Whangarei for these events. “We have some real talent

here”, said Krystal. At a recent week long dance workshop in Whangarei, Bream Bay dancers took seven of 12 trophies awarded at the end of the week. Krystal and Jackie will be employing some of their senior dance students as student teachers. Sixteen year old Briar Taylor will teach Hip Hop, eighteen year old Cheries Low will teachJazz and Lyrical and Andrea Petty – Osher (aged 21) will teach contemporary

dance. Some lessons will be based at the Ruakaka racecourse, while others will be held at the Anglican church hall in Tamingi St.Jackie says she hopes some of the young people who hang around the streets with nothing to do will make use of this opportunity.
