Are these children hungry or are they just being cheeky? That is the question I have been putting to people who are having to deal with the little gang of eight to fifteen – year - olds who are spending far more time than they should, left to their own devices in the Ruakaka Town Centre. “A bit of both” is the answer most people have given me.Who is supposed to be looking after these kids? That is the next question. I understand that parents can’t be held responsible for everything their children get up to but if these children are at the Ruakaka shops begging for food at 8am then someone is not taking their parenting role seriously enough. What can be done about this situation? Sue Rudman the Manager of the Bream Bay Community Trust was unavailable for comment on Monday when we went to press. It will be interesting to hear her thoughts on this and to find out if the trust has a role to play in such situations. The Police are following up on complaints from the business owners but I haven’t heard yet if they have tracked down the children’s parents or guardians. This morning I got some photographs emailed to me of graffiti all over the Bream Bay Merchant Building in Kepa Rd. - another example of children without sufficient adult supervision. Someone needs to make these children (and their parents) think about what they are doing. Des and Shirley Olney are elderly people and give generously of their time and, probably also their money, to run the Anglican Church food bank. They have done this for many years and have, no doubt, helped out hundreds

of people in need. They shouldn’t have to but up with having thier garden vandalised in retaliation for refusing to hand over a food parcel to a bunch of children. Most business people work extremely hard and can’t be expected to look after other people’s kids. Stealing from businesses and committing vandalism on their buildings is like biting the hand that feeds you. These children and their parents need to recognise that businesses bring services and jobs to our community. They also pay taxes, the same taxes, which go towards WINZ benefits, police, schools, Whanua Ora support services etc.

Are these children hungry or are they just being cheeky?

A thirty - metre high wireless broadband tower has been erected at Marsden Point, on industrial land on the eastern side of Marsden Bay Drive. The structure will improve broadband and mobile phone coverage in a six to ten kilo-metre radius, in the One Tree Point, Mars-den Point and Whangarei Heads areas and should result in peak broadband speeds of 3Mbps or better. It is expected be ready for use in late April. Caitlin Metz, community relations man-ager for Vodafone, said 154 such towers are being built (and a further 387 existing towers are being upgraded) in rural areas throughout New Zealand as part of a Gov-ernment five year Rural Broadband Initia-tive. The Government is paying for the construction of the towers while Vodafone provides the electronics, which it can then rent out to other wireless broadband and cellphone operators. This tower is one of five RBI towers pro-posed for the Whangarei District with oth-ers planned for Maungakaramea, Ruatan-gata West, Pataua and Matapouri.

Public submissions called for on racing club proposal to rezone its land The Whangarei Racing Club is asking that its 50 hectares of land at the end of Peter Snell Rd. be re-zoned from its current Coastal Countryside status to Ruakaka Equine Environment, which would allow for intensive residential development (a maximum of 350 residential units) plus commercial develop-ment including retail outlets, a hotel or motel com-plex and a conference centre adjacent to the coast-line south east of the racecourse. The Whangarei District Council has notified a pri-vate plan change and public submissions are invited

with a close off date of Friday 26 April 2013.The idea is that sale or lease of surplus land for the above purposes would provide funds to secure the long term viability of the Ruakaka Racecourse and allow it to further develop its training and racing fa-cilities. A full copy of the proposal is available at Council Service Centres (including at the library building in Takutai Place, Ruakaka) or on line at: www.wdc.govt.nz/districtplan

I was amused to read of your exclusion from the Busi-ness Breakfast Meetings. Pointing out that the Marsden City consent process has not yet begun clearly hit a nerve. Then they have the nerve to say they will con-tact you if they have a media release or someone will-ing to be interviewed (read someone who wants free publicity). I went to one of these meetings although maybe a dif-ferent group and listened to Craig Brown asking the attendees if they had any ideas for a $400m business to employ 300-400 to go on Council land adjacent to the port. A politician recycling plant to create fertilizer was all that came to my mind. We then had the Mayor saying he had toured the country seeking new ideas and cruise boats berthing at Marsden Wharf was the answer. That was about three years ago and there has been little change in the thinking of “business”.The greatest asset Ruakaka has is the environment or natural resources – the beach and the ocean. These give rise to a multiplicity of activities including fishing, div-ing, kiting, land yachting, yachting and cruising, horse riding, motorbikes, cycling, kayaking to name some. There are already businesses in place serving diving, fishing and kiting. If there was a coherent approach with a proper Tourist Information Centre on SH1 then tourists would come. Long Bay in Auckland cannot provide for the Tourists that arrive wanting to kayak for example. The overflow is going to Shakespeare Park, Whangaparaoa.Of course, there would have to be buy in from Tourism NZ, Council, the Community and a shift in attitude to horses on the beach (it’s a long beach), motorcycles and cycle tracks. What would flow from tourists is more accommodation, vibrant eateries and a sustain-able cottage industry that would begin to grow the local

economy and population. Isn’t that what “business” so desperately wants. I don’t know about you Marilyn but I am pleased not to go to breakfast meetings and I like Ruakaka/One Tree Point as it is. Growth will inevitably come and I for one prefer to have you observing and commenting on it to keep us informed. The Business group should have learned that shutting out the Fourth Estate is nev-er productive. Steve ScottRuakaka

The Ministry of Education has agreed to build two new classrooms at One Tree Point Primary School. The school’s roll jumped by 43 children to 233 at the beginning of this year, a new full time teacher has been appointed and one end of the library will be curtained off to act as a temporary extra classroom. “We acknowledge that this situation is not ideal but it is our only viable option at the moment”, said Principal Adrian Smith in the school newsletter.Planning for the new classrooms will start straight away but building always takes longer than expected and we are unable at this stage to give indications of when these new buildings will be ready for children”, Mr. Smith said. He said that dealing with roll growth in the school was the most talked about issue with the Education Review Office officials who recently visited the school” Mr. Smith said, “It is important we retain our school culture and manage the change proactively and effectively.

The committee, which looks after the Mission to Seafarers Welfare Centre at Marsden Point, has paid back a $56,000 loan from the Whangarei District Council, three years ahead of schedule. The group held a celebratory afternoon tea last Tuesday and received a letter of thanks and congratulations from the Mayor of Whangarei, Morris Cutforth who said this was the first time ever a loan had been paid back early to the Council. The new seafarers community centre was rebuilt on land owned by Port Corp in 2006 after it was forced from its previous site when that land was needed for the expansion of the port. Delays and increased building compliance costs led to cost overruns on the new building. Four members of the committee (two couples) put up some of their own savings to cover the shortfall. In 2007 a newcomer to the committee suggested the group apply to the Council to have this refinanced. Dorothy Thomson the Mission to Seafarers committee secretary said the early payment was largely due to the good work of the custodians who have been looking after the centre. A big boost came with a contract for a bus run from the dockside to the centre paid for by the Port with the Welfare Centre’s custodian driving the Port’s mini bus. Committee members have also run stalls to help raise the money and a donation box for the welfare centre left in the visitor centre at the oil refinery has also helped. The Mission to Seafarers building is now freehold.

Twenty seven bags of rubbish collected on their morning walkIt took them about a week to collect all this, walking on alternate sides of the road each morning and leaving the filled rubbish bags on the grass verge to pick up in a drive around with the trailer. They picked up some interesting stuff. Merle was lucky enough to find a $10 note. She also found a stick on bra still in its packet. She tried to pass this on to a granddaughter but the girl wasn’t too impressed. Jeanette said “people driving by probably thought we were PD workers when they saw us with the rubbish bags.” Most of the rubbish was alcohol or soft drink bottles. There was also lots of broken glass.

Merle – “Every time we saw a bit of rubbish and went to pick it up, we would find about six more bits.”Jeanette – “Why can’t people just leave their rubbish in their cars and then just have a clean out once a week.”The worst section of road was along The Braigh. Merle said, “People seem to be buying drinks at the dairy and then when they have finished, they just throw the bottles out the window.”Unfortunately Merle and Jeanette did not get to enjoy their litter free walking circuit for very long. Just days after their clean up was complete, rubbish was already starting to reappear on the roadside.

Kiwi to be realeased into Brynderwyn Forest Up to 14 Northland brown kiwi will be released into the Brynderwyn Forest next month, launch-ing a project that could see 40 kiwi released there over the next three years. Members of the public are invited to the release, which will be held at 300 King Road, Mangawhai at 10am on Saturday April 13. The kiwi will be released into the 423 hectare Marunui block, which was purchased by a group of conservationists in 1987. The land is protected by a QE11 National Trust Open Space Covenant. The re-introduction of kiwi is the initiative of Marunui Conservation Limited. The shareholding families have worked together for over twenty - five years implementing a comprehensive animal pest management programme. Marunui Conservation spokesman John Hawley says the re-introduction will provide the North-land brown kiwi with another managed breeding site that will help support the future viability of the species. Kiwi for the release have been raised on Motuora Island in the Hauraki Gulf as part of the BNZ’s kiwi protection programme Operation Nest Egg. Up to 14 kiwi will be captured overnight by ex-pert staff from the Department of Conservation’s Whangarei Kiwi Sanctuary and from the Kiwi Recovery Group. The birds selected will weigh over 1200 grams with equal numbers of males and females. Trans-

mitters will be fitted to some so their movements can be monitored after the release. In the morning, after a blessing by iwi, the birds will be transported from the island to Marunui.Iwi groups whose rohe extends to the Brynderwyns have been consulted with over the translocation and will perform another blessing ceremony before the birds are let loose in the forest. Lloyd Cullen, who has lived on the north eastern, Waipu Cove edge of the Brynderwyns for 54 years said he has never seen or heard a kiwi in the forest. Lloyd said he hopes he lives long enough to see kiwi on his land. The Marunui landowners hope to gain the support of adjacent landowners and will be holding workshops to demonstrate plant and animal pest control so that if the relocation is successful and the introduced kiwi breed and spread out crossing the boundaries into neighbouring properties, they will continue to have protection from predator species. Dogs, feral cats, stoats, ferrets and wild pigs have all played a part in the decline of kiwi populations in Northland. Dogs are the single biggest threat. Kiwi are particularly vulnerable because they have a distinctive smell and are therefore easy for predators to track down. Because they have no wing muscles or breastbone, their chests and internal organs can easily be fatally crushed.

little bit of a challenge. The photograph above shows teams taking part in a heat of the Senior Assembly race where teams need to affix outboard motors and fuel supplies to their boats before heading out over the waves to pick up a third team member who is waiting out behind the breakers alongside a line of buoys. The patients are unceremoniously hauled into the boats as they go around the buoys at speed. The Waipu Club does not have a competition IRB team at present but the Ruakaka Surf Lifesaving Club entered one girls’ and two senior men’s teams. The girls’ team, comprising Maysha Ahrens and Briar Taylor reached the semi final of the tube rescue race as did one of the senior men’s team comprising Haig Mehrten and Rory Taylor.

Juanita went out into the store and took these goods from her before she could leave the shop. The woman had about six items with a to-tal value of around $60. These were mainly face creams, hair products etc. Juanita thinks she would have taken more if she hadn’t gone out and stopped her. Juanita followed the shoplifter outside and noted the licence plate number on her vehicle.

The Waipu Opportunity Shop increasingly has to deal with bags of dirty, smelly unsaleable clothing left on the verandah of the shop outside trading hours. “It’s getting to be quite an epidemic”, said Des Olney who chairs the opportunity shop’s management committee. “ Some of those bags absolutely stink with socks that haven’t been washed and clothes that are covered in mud. Our volunteers go through a lot of soap powder washing it all but then we find some of the clothes are badly stained and quite unusable.”Discarded broken down television sets and computers are also becoming more and more of a problem. “We have to dispose of the blessed things ourselves and when we take them to the dump we get charged for them”, said Des. He said the Waipu shop can handle small electrical goods in working order but has no space for larger items. Proceeds from the Waipu Opportunity Shop are distributed to local, national and international charities.

Top Teams event to raise money for dying woman’s family

Three friends are organising a Top Teams competition to raise money for the family of Ruakaka woman Stella Gibbs, who has cancer and has been told she has only a short time to live. Stella is in Australia and is too ill to travel home.Krystal Williams, Karina Fowler and Toni Watling are inviting teams to enter the competition which will be held in the grounds of the Marsden Tavern on Marsden Point Road on Sunday 14 April. The event has been named Stella’s Wish and money raised will be shared between Stella’s family and CanTeen, a support organization for young people who have been diagnosed with cancer. Teams of five will vie in a variety of competitions including: running through tyres, sliding down a waterslide, walking along a gym plank and a tug of war. The price of entry is $50 per team. There is a special junior section for children aged 6 to 14 as well as a senior section for over 14 year olds. Entry forms are available at Bream Bay Office Services in the Ruakaka town centre or at the Marsden Tavern. You can also have one emailed by sending a request to: [email protected] phone numbers are Krystal - 946 0766, Toni - 021 025 704 63 or Katrina – 021 057 8035Local bands have given their time free of charge to play, dance groups will perform, the Bream Bay College Kapahaka group will make an appearance and there will be food stalls. Krystal said the children in her Pulse dance class came up with the Top Teams idea. Stella’s daughter Callista was one of her first dance students and the family has been involved with the dance school ever since. Krystal said the young dancers are keen to make this an annual event with a different family in need as the recipient of funds raised each year.

The Ruakaka Cubs took part in their first ever cardboard boat race at Paihia on Sunday March 3. The cardboard boat race is an annual event held to celebrate the birthday of Lord Baden Powell who founded the scout-ing movement. The younger kea’s make model cardboard boats to race, the cubs make real cardboard boats and the scouts have to bring all their materials

and build a boat in one hour on the day, before racing.“We really had no idea of what to expect and how to go about it. We just had the rules. The boat had to hold three cubs and we could use cardboard, tape, paint, and glue and that was it,” said parent Nomi Elisar.“So we all set about building as fast as we could and with very few cubs meet-ing days before race, many pitched in on weekends and afternoons to get the job done. It was great fun for the kids and their parents and we all learnt a lot.In total we managed to build four boats. On race day the Ruakaka team was given the honour of breaking the flag at the opening ceremony as they had traveled the furthest. Nomi said, “It was excitement from the very start! Many boats began sinking in the first 10 metres, but, despite a slow start for some, all the Ruakaka boats made it past the turn around point. Unfortunately not far from there our team of girls came unstuck and their boat slowly sank, but they kept a smile on their faces and awaited the salvage crew.Meanwhile our Viking ship had pulled away and was making a fast pass, neck in neck with one other boat. They were no match for our Vikings who had their man jump overboard and run to touch the flagpole and take out first place. After all the salvage crews and rescue teams had finished on the water, it was time to recoup and assess the damage. Then for all boats still sea worthy a second fun race took place. Again it was one of our boats that came first, this time Bruce the Shark. It was all very exciting and a huge amount of fun. I would recommend it to anyone after a good days entertainment.”The Ruakaka Cubs are looking for new leaders. “We ask anybody in the community who would be interested in taking over this role to come forward. You would not be alone as we have a great group of par-ents who are willing to help out, but due to other commitments are unable to take on role as leader”, said Nomi. She said, “personally I would love to see a man take this role on, as, lets face it, our kids need more positive male roles models in their lives”. But at the end of the day we would appreciate anyone who would be willing to give our children their time and knowledge. Maybe even someone who doesn’t have young chil-dren anymore but has a lot to offer.” Anyone interested in becoming a cub leader please contact Gavin Cyprian – 432 8965.

Firefighters from Ruakaka Fire Brigade have had plenty of action over the last few weeks, with business, sport and community events keeping them on the go.

St John Summer ExperienceThe St John Ambulance held their annual ‘Summer Experience’ in Ruakaka again this year, a weekend of training, education and scenarios. The Ruakaka Fire Brigade mixed in to be part of a huge ‘car versus plane’ accident scenario, designed to test the two services in a multi patient trauma scene. The many patients were made up to look every bit like the real thing with broken limbs, lacerations, deceased, pregnant distressed mums etc by specialist make up crews. It definitely had all our teams in a sweat as it really took on a reality with screaming patients, worried onlookers and hawk eyed overseers.Local scrap metal company owner Gordon Abernethy kindly assisted by supplying (and later removing) a vehicle that we could and did cut open, and an aircraft was also supplied via St John to help the scene to be as realistic as possibleWe all learned lots, refreshed on high pressure rescue and extrications, and experienced working together as one unit, which is often how it happens. Both services came away with staff that from their experiences will be able to perform at an even higher level when the call goes out.

Help Your Fire Brigade! The Ruakaka Fire Brigade has a 2 day motor vehicle crash rescue course taking place in early May and needs 7 old motor vehicles for the Regional trainers to be able to use for scenarios and training. The cars will be destroyed during the training as we are refreshed in the latest techniques of Jaws of Life operations, scene control and extrication . If you have a car or ute or truck in the back yard that won’t get another warrant or has a blown up engine, please consider “donating “ it to our Fire Brigade for our training programme. We will up lift and remove any vehicles at no cost, and the greater community will certainly benefit from our increased skill level at motor vehicle crash rescue techniques following this advanced training .

Fire Ban.The region’s Total Fire Bans are still in place and we would like everybody to be extra vigilant in watching for any sign of fires. Basically, there should be no smoke, as no one will be allowed permits for open fires, so any sign of smoke or fire, don’t rely on someone else dialing 111, get in there and do it. An out of control scrub fire in Takahiwai recently was alerted to us from people noticing the smoke in Parua Bay, as the Takahiwai residents were so busy fighting the fire with a well formed “bucket brigade” that they didn’t have the time to Dial 111 for Fire Service assistance. Early warning is crucial for the Fire Service, as we need time to get to the scene and control a blaze before it swallows up a house or other property. There are no fines for calling out the Fire Service, but there are definitely potential fines for those who create or cause any outside fires. Watch your local papers and listen to the radio for updates on the Fire Ban. If you aren’t sure, call Whangarei District Council or Forest Protection Services for information on the fire bans.Be aware also that there are people in our community who don’t listen to the news on the radio, and don’t read newspapers!!!!! Hard to believe I know, but it is fact, so they may not even be aware of Total Fire Bans. That is why we need you to Dial 111 if you see smoke, and we will deal with it. No confrontation needed on your behalf. Our region is as dry perhaps as it has ever been and a few showers are not going to affect the drought condition so be careful out there.

Driver Reviver StopA Ruakaka fire crew will also have a presence and support at the “Driver Reviver” stopover at the Uretiti weighbridge site over Easter. Our role will be to add to the attraction of free coffee and sausage sandwiches for the travelers heading home

from Easter holidays. We will have a static display of rescue equipment, show kids over the Fire Trucks, and have a few giveaways and games for entertainment whilst on their trip home. The stopover serves as a good “reviver” for the drivers and families making their journey all the more safer as a result of the rest and entertainment.

Fire CallsI am pleased to announce that our call outs for 2013 are down somewhat from previous years with about 7 call outs per month so far. Two thirds of these calls have been made up of scrub/rubbish fires and car accidents. The surprising feature is that with our worst drought in 70+ years, the number of scrub fires has been kept to a minimum by our community, and hats off to you all for that.A local business woman was lucky to escape uninjured when her car suffered electrical short circuiting under the dashboard whilst she was driving on State Highway One. The car burst into flame as she pulled over and was totally enveloped in flames by the time the Ruakaka Fire Brigade and Refining NZ water tanker arrived. The brigade had difficulty extinguishing the fire which kept reigniting from fuel leaking from the fuel tank. Traffic had to be stopped on SH1 until the fire could be brought under control, which also exhibited the massive traffic flow we have on State Highway 1 at that time of day, with the tail stretching back past the G.A.S service station in no time and towards the Mata Hall to the north.

Daylight Saving – Smoke AlarmsDon’t forget daylight saving time is ending soon on April 7th, and that is when you should be changing your smoke alarm batteries, whether they are good or bad. We have received recommendations that you buy these batteries from any source, even the $2.00 shops as smoke alarms have minimal draw of power, and replacing them will be much more affordable.Stay safe and observant in any emergency, don’t delay, Dial 111.

A plane crash onto a car was the scenario at this summer’s joint St. John Ambulance and Ruakaka Fire Brigade weekend long training exercise.

“I want you to practise for at least two hours each night,” Jazz musician, tutor and conductor Jim Thorne from Whangarei would constantly say to our College Stage Band musicians during the weekly practices dur-ing the 1980s and 1990s. “Oh Jim, every teacher says that to them, don’t go on.” I would reply and this would be our conversation most weeks. However some must have listened to him for despite our small pool of students to call on Bream Bay College developed a very good sounding big band that played at a number of events at school, other schools and around the district.Jim died recently after a short illness and at the large funeral in Whangarei his old jazz band played his fa-vourite jazz standards plus the slow and mournful New Orleans funereal marches. It was fitting to hear his legacy continue that day as he was a tireless member of the local Jazz clubs and an itinerant Jazz teacher in most of the High Schools in the area. We were lucky to have had Jim’s expertise. Although self-taught he had learned to write up section parts to cover the lack of certain instruments in student stage bands. This was a huge skill because just when students are becoming fine musicians at schools they leave and you have to start all over. Jim had one bias. He had no time for rock musicians especially drummers. “Too loud, too fast and unreli-able,” he would scoff. Despite my support for them (we had many great rock bands) his opinion would not shift and one year when we needed to use two of our best rock musicians for the rhythm section with one particularly good stage band he was naturally unim-pressed. “They’ll be great,” I said, twisting their arms, “and most reliable.”One practice this would all come unstuck. Unbeknown to Jim, the drummer, head boy Steven Henderson, was a Ruakaka volunteer fireman. Steven sat, surrounded by drums, cymbals, and mountains of jazz music at the end of a very small practice room which was jammed with 18 senior musicians who sat behind their music

stands, with their sheets of music and trumpets, saxo-phones, clarinets, and trombones and Jim keeping time and me keeping the peace. It was going well until sud-denly Steven leaped up, and like a whirlpool traversed the room and the musicians scattering papers and music stands as he raced out the door to answer his beeper. Jim’s face had to be seen to be believed. “There,” he said, “I told you they were unreliable.” It was some time later when we had finished laughing that we told Jim the reason for the spectacular disappearance of the drummer but I doubt he believed us. The following students were just some of those musi-cians who had the privilege to learn to play big band music with the late Jim Thorne. John and David Bron-lund, Melanie Whittle, Elizabeth and Mark Meyer, Lynley Pirihi, Russell Simons, Steven and Rachel Weir, Kayne Slack, Scott Stevenson ,Colin Ogle, An-drea Wakelin, Emma Lynch, and Sharon Rowson.

The women in the Bream Bay 60s Up Club held their own fashion parade at Millers Fashions in Whangarei earlier this month. Five BB 60s Up ladies modeled some of the stores clothing. They must have looked good on the catwalk because Maureen Moody reports this was followed by a “shopping frenzy.” Maureen said, “Good discounts, friendly staff and helpful friends made for a great evening out. Then we joined the men for a most enjoyable dinner at the Whangarei R.S.A.”

Following on from the article printed in the Bream Bay News on 28th February, tickets sold well for the Charity Quilt, with $1,140 raised for the Edmonds Smith Street Kindergarten in Woolston, Christchurch. Roberta Haenga-Plank from One Tree Point was the lucky winner and Emma Hales from the Bream Bay Pharmacy drew the raffle. As well as the raffled quilt, the Ruakaka Patch-work Group have also knitted hats, mittens and slippers for the children, plus cotton cushion covers and little cotton quilts which will be sent to Christchurch by Courier. The Ruakaka Patchwork Group would welcome donations of wool and cotton fabric (preferably children’s print) to make more quilts and knit-ted garments. Drop off locations are Waipu Pri-mary School (Susan McRae), One Tree Point School (Marian Platt), Ruakaka Library (Karen Thur-low) and the Waipu Library (Delia Walker). If you are interested in joining this group, meetings are held every Thursday fortnight (next meeting 4tth

April) from 10am to 2pm at the Marsden Yacht Club, One Tree Point Road. Please contact Ann McNamara on 432 7003 - or just come along.

Why juggling is good for you!It is relaxing, focuses the mind and makes you feel great. Why does this happen? It instantly connects both halves of the human brain (left and right) to increase production of neuronal cell bodies or create new connections-matrix in your brain: Research indicates that juggling will increase self-esteem, self –confi-dence and a greater level of co-ordination regardless of ability, gender or age.Adults of any age can greatly benefit from learning how to juggle. If there is enough forthcoming interest by adults I could establish a new class within our existing community circus context. The focus can be simple juggling (object manipulation) which anybody can do, or we can expand into other circus skills. Tailored as a short course of approximately 8 weeks, you will learn the art of juggling balls, clubs, scarves and rings. If interest is there then I would like to hear from you or get in touch with Circool Circus.

Keep on juggling Achmed Abman [email protected]/02102777294

The meeting will be held in St. Peters Anglican Church Hall (Nova Scotia Drive) on Thursday 11 April at 7pm and representatives from the Department of Conservation and the Whangarei District Council will be present to explain the roles of these bodies in relation to the cycleway building process.

THE RUAKAKA PATCHWORK GROUP wishes to thank Waipu Hammer Hardware and the Bream Bay Pharmacy, who sold many tickets in our raffle to raise money for the Edmonds Smith Street Kin-dergarten in Woolston, Christchurch. Thanks also to everyone in the community for their support. Ro-berta Haenga-Plank from One Tree Point was the lucky winner of the quilt and Emma Hales from the Bream Bay Pharmacy drew the raffle.

A cardiac arrest during a rugby game or an asthma attack at home, call St John – now they are calling you.Volunteer Ambulance Officer Alex Maunder says, The need for more local volunteer ambulance of-ficers is rapidly growing as the demand for St John ambulance services in the Bream Bay area contin-ues to grow.A rapidly growing and ageing population and in-crease in chronic health conditions such as diabetes and obesity means demand for the St John ambu-lance service is continually growing.“Our trained volunteers are highly valued as part of our service. Without volunteers there would be no overnight ambulance service at all in the Bream Bay Area.”To keep the ambulance service running 24 hours a day, seven days a week in Bream Bay we rely heavily on volunteers. Without enough of them to crew the ambulance this means patients must wait for ambulances to come from either Maungaturoto or Whangarei, which can take up to 40 minutes. In an emergency situation patients need help quickly and can’t wait that long.Prospective volunteers must have a clean police record and will need a full NZ driver’s licence, availability for a minimum of one 12hr shift a week in addition to training fortnightly on Tuesday evenings, commitment to the well-being of oth-ers, ability to learn new skills, good health and be physically able.If you would like to become a volunteer ambulance officer with St John Bream Bay or for more infor-mation then give us a call on 432 7311 or visit the station at 4 Tamingi Street (off Peter Snell Road), Ruakaka.
