Colin Stewart Dick Wise (F) Bill Dickie (F) ( One Finisher Only ) 1min 38.8 Ht 4 Sensation! Both Elder and Sanderson fell after Sprouts drew up in front of Sanderson on the second bend (3/4 in modern terms) of the first lap. The meeting Steward ruled the two out of the race awarding it to Marr. Other reports indicate that Elder cut in in front of Sanderson who, despite pulling his bike into a full broadside, failed to miss Elder and crashed into him. Andy Marr Sprouts Elder (F) Charles Sanderson (F) ( Race Awarded ) * No Time Ht 5 Jim "Hard Luck" Holder dropped out early on. Whilst Kelly lead all the way, Sam Reid was only three yards behind him at the flag.Ned Kelly Sam Reid Jim Holder (F) 1min 30.8 Ht 6 Bradshaw fell on the first bend of the final lap bringing down Nicholl. Nicholl was injured. The rerun produced a win for Chapman from fallers Bradshaw and Nicholl. Jack Chapman Maurice Bradshaw (F) Andy Nicholl (F) 1min 31.8 Ht 7 Goodfellow missed the start and allowed Galloway and Burnet away. Side by side the two covered the four laps until Galloway, only a couple of feet in front, snatched the win. Billy Galloway Eric Burnet Oliver Goodfellow (RET) 1min 30.8 Ht 8 Creek was a clear winner by just over a machine's length but it was only his track craft that kept George McKenzie out of the winners spot. Ivor Creek George McKenzie Harry Duncan 1min 28.8 Ht 9 Bill Naismith, who was in for the missing Jack Parker, and Andy Milne could not catch Norrie. Norrie Isbister Bill Naismith Andy Milne 1min 32.4 Semi-Final (1) A close encounter but Drew won by a machine's length. Parsons was slowed by a tyre coming adrift. Wednesday 7th August 1929 Marine Gardens, Edinburgh Marine Gardens Speedway Open Track Championship ( 4 Laps Flying Start ) Ht 1 Jimmie Pinkerton raced away to the front at the first bend. Logie went wide but came on to challenge for a lap before his bike gave trouble. Norrie Isbister closed the gap on Pinkerton and made a desperate effort to ride inside on the last lap but "Pinkerton found his measure and raced to the line a good winner." Jimmie Pinkerton Norrie Isbister James Logie (ET) 1min 28.4 Ht 2 Sensation as after Frank Duckett had rounded the first and second bends he swung round and fell. Andy Milne pulled away from Dickie to win. Andy Milne Bill Dickie Frank Duckett (F)(Harley) 1min 30.2 Ht 3 Dick Wise copied his Aussie mate Duckett, falling at the same place. Chapman snatched the lead from Elder but on the third and fourth bends of lap one Chapman went wide and Elder moved in for the pass. Chapman held on to the next turn where he was passed by Sprouts who went on to win in track record time. Sprouts Elder Jack Chapman Dick Wise (F) (New Track Record ) 1min 24 Ht 4 Aussie "luck" continued as Kelly made it three in a row. Parker went on to win over Burnet who's bike was not on song. Jack Parker Eric Burnet (NF) Ned Kelly (F) 1min 25.4 Ht 5 The needle match. McQueen met his "bogeyman", Roger Frogley. Drawn on the inside McQueen took off in front and, despite riding wide a short distance in front of Frogley stayed ahead. Bike troubles in the form of a loose engine guard slowed Roger as he chose to tear it free from the bike. Despite this Roger was only a short distance behind at the flag. Drew McQueen Roger Frogley Jim Kempster (Rudge) 1min 25 Ht 6 Rerun after Hore fell and was excluded. Syd Parsons could not gain the lead in the first staging and lost to "fellow Aussie" Johnson. Ron Johnson Syd Parsons Freddie Hore (F) 1min 26.2 Ht 7 Shock as Creek is left at the start. Wigfield leads Arthur round the first turn but on the next turn it is Arthur on the lead. Wigfield falls gifting second to Ivor. Frank Arthur (Harley) Ivor Creek George Wigfield (F) 1min 24.2 Ht 8 Catlett wins after a close tussle with Goodfellow who had caught a slowing Aussie Jim Holder. Stan Catlett Oliver Goodfellow Jim Holder (ET) 1min 30.2 Ht 9 Cattell looked a winner but, after drifting wide, allowing Stevenson a chance of fresh air on the last lap. Tiger Stevenson Arnie Cattell Harry Duncan 1min 29.4 Semi-Final (1) Elder won with ease. Sprouts Elder Jimmie Pinkerton Andy Milne 1min 25.8 Semi-Final (2) McQueen got away with Johnson and Parker at the back. Johnson gave up after a brush with McQueen who held the lead. Parker caught up with him on the back straight on lap two and pulled ahead to win despite McQueen's desperate challenge on the last lap. Jack Parker Drew McQueen Ron Johnson (NF) ( E.T.R.) 1min 24 Semi-Final (3) Arthur won in unspectacular if record style. Frank Arthur Stan Catlett Tiger Stevenson ( E.T.R.) 1min 24 Final: After a false start the three men got away together and took the first turn with not one claiming any advantage. Elder however swung into the back straight with a slight advantage. Arthur drew up level and they went neck and neck into the next turn with Parker at the rear. Here, notwithstanding that he was on the outside, Arthur actually headed his rival out of the turn. Elder was taken aback and was either affected by the fumes of Arthur's bike or by Arthur's cinder spray and as he flung up his hand in front of his face, his engine failed. (Probably the reporter was not familiar with the usual signal for engine failure). Arthur went on to win easily and Sprouts was awarded third place. Frank Arthur Jack Parker Sprouts Elder (EF) (New T.R.) 1min 23 ( Frank Arthur on a Harley Davidson won the Gold Helmet outright plus £100, and was the new track record holder with a new time of 1min 23sec which he set in the Final. )

Saturday 17th August 1929 Marine Gardens, Edinburgh ( Postponed Rain ) The billboards proclaimed that the stars of the event on 17th August would be Billy Galloway and Jim Holder from Glasgow with Bill Dickie and Allan Campbell taking lesser billings. West Ham's Jack Adams "a leading English star" and his West Ham mate Don Taylor "one of England's most spectacular riders" were on the menu. Of the two only Adams came back to race on Marine cinders. Aussie Boyd Pratt "one of London's Speedway Idols" and Art Warren "the Wembley Speedway Crack Rider and Certain Thrill Maker" were also ruled out due to the rain. Boyd was another who never came back to Edinburgh but Art did get a second chance to appear in Scotland's Capital. This was the second rain off, one of only 5 in the 1929-31 period. Two further rain offs in 1938 took the Marine Gardens total to a career 7. Saturday 5th October 1929 Marine Gardens, Edinburgh Postponed Rain A rain off prevented the Edinburgh supporters watching their team take on a Belle Vue side which would have included Frank Varey, Ian Ritchings, Wilf Mulliner and Alex McLachlan. This would have been a good guide for the 1930 season. It just might have made the Marine Gardens promotion invest in bigger stars than Len Stewart and Syd Parsons for their venture into League Speedway in support of Drew McQueen and George McKenzie. No criticism of Len or Syd is implied but hindsight showed that both the Manchester sides, each with their four stars, cleaned up in 1930.
