Dear Friends at St. Louise, Happy Third Sunday of Advent! (Wait, already?!) These weeks are a time of preparation for Christmas and for whatever may come our way. We have all seen more than our fair share of unexpected turns in the road since the 2020 Lenten season! Thank you to everyone for your patience with everything we need to continue to do to keep everyone safe, here at the parish and in life in general. A gentle reminder that holiday gatherings are among the most common ways that the virus can spread – please join me in thinking carefully about what changes each of us might need to make, in our own habits and traditions, to best live out Jesus’ call to love our neighbor in these changed circumstances. It is with good reason that we hear so much about patience in the readings and prayers for Advent! Keeping ourselves and each other safe through this pandemic takes extra effort on everyone’s part, and I surely appreciate it. Here are some things to keep in mind: Be patient with yourself: It can be frustrating to think that you have everything you need as you go out the door, but wait—I forgot my mask! Try to not let the minor things get in the way of a positive day. Like the title of a well-known book says, don’t sweat the small stuff! Be patient and kind with others: A good place to start is at church. I know that it can be irritating to not be able to sit where you normally like; however, in order to keep the proper social distancing, please don’t move once you are seated. Please try to arrive at least a little bit before the start of Mass so there’s time to get you settled in a spot within our limited seating. We need to let the hospitality ministers do their work. They are volunteers and members of our parish. Instead of grumbling, “fake it till you make it” – do smile and say thank you. Everyone is doing their best! Be joyful for God’s patience with us: The Scriptures clearly warn us that we must not test God’s generous patience. Instead, we can remember to express our joy and thanks that God is so abundantly merciful and patient with us, even though we don’t deserve it and did nothing to earn it.

Fr. Gary’s article continues on page 3...

...Fr. Gary’s articule continued As I write this column, three parishes in the Archdiocese have had to close due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19, and four priests are quarantined. At least one of those parishes saw a high number of cases among their parishioners resulting from gatherings in homes and at private parties where wearing a mask, keeping at least six feet between people and hand sanitiz-ing were not observed. Of course, those kinds of gatherings are the settings where we naturally relax and let down our guard – which unfortunately is dangerous at this time! We all need to keep front of mind the importance of observing the COVID proto-cols not only at church but any time we may be in contact with people outside of our own households. I know how hard this is, believe me! It does take a lot of patience, and perseverance – but I know that the Holy Spirit will pour those gifts upon us in abundance, whenever we ask for them with a sincere heart. So let’s ask!

Come Lord Jesus!

Fr. Gary Zender

The Joy of Giving On December 6 the feast of St. Nicholas, two young girls who are 8 and 10 years old told me that they were moved by the Stewardship testimony that the d’Costa family gave in Octo-ber. Since then they saved up their birthday and allowance money and each one gave the parish $50. What a wonder example of stewardship to all of us! – Fr. Gary

Advent Prayer Lord God,

during this time of Advent may Your Word illuminate

all darkness in my life. May one flame serve as a spark

to ignite in me a fire of desire for You. May a second flame light a lamp

by which I may find my way to You. May a third flame warm my heart

so I may love as You love. And may a fourth flame shine so brightly that the world may see Your Word in me.

Come, Lord Jesus. Come, Emmanuel. Use me to shine forth Your Word

to a world seeking light in the darkness. Amen.
