Sacred Heart Catholic Church Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time–February 4, 2018
Reflection from the Pastor: As we approach Ash Wednesday (February 14) and the start of Lent, it’s helpful to
review the Church’s regulations on the Lenten fast and abstinence. Ash Wednesday
(February 14) and Good Friday (March 30) are days of fasting. Catholics, from the
18th birthday up to the 59th birthday are obliged to fast, that is, to take only one full
meal and two lesser meals, with nothing to eat in between meals. The two lesser
meals together should not equal the full meal. Drinking fluids is not contrary to the
practice of fasting.
Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent, including Good Friday, are days of
abstinence from meat. All Catholics, beginning with the 14th birthday, are obliged to
abstain from eating meat. There is no upper age limit on the obligation to abstain
from meat.
Although those who fall outside of the obligatory groups who must fast or abstain
from meat do not have to fast or abstain, it is praiseworthy and in the spirit of Lenten
sacrifice, as well as solidarity with your fellow Christians to either begin the practice
earlier than one must (for the young) or to continue fasting (for older Catholics).
People who are unable to practice bodily penance, due to pregnancy, illness or hard
physical labor may choose another form of penance and charity in consultation with
your confessor.

PARISH NEWS
Dear Parishioners,
As you may have heard already, the Pastoral Council,
the Finance Council and I commissioned a study of our
parish facilities. That study concluded in the early
summer with some sobering results: we need over
$850,000 worth of work in order to keep our facilities up
to date and functioning. Like so many places around our
country, our infrastructure is showing its age. The
projects range from simple plaster and paint repair to
major items like new heating and cooling systems, new
windows for the school and tuck pointing the bricks of
the school exterior. All of these things are necessary in
order to continue to keep our buildings in good working
order, keep them heated and cooled and to keep the
entire parish safe for the future. We have made posters
that are displayed in all of our parish buildings that show
examples and explanations of the specific projects we
are talking about.
What can we do about it? The obvious first step is to
pray! We need to place our trust in God’s Providence
for our parish. He will provide for us and prosper the
good work we are doing. Prayer will lead us also to
reflect upon our own ability to contribute to this good
work and to give sacrificial gifts above and beyond our
current tithes so that our needs can be met.
I am also in consultation with the diocese concerning a
capital campaign study to see if that is a way to meet our
needs. In the meantime, should you wish to contribute
towards maintenance and repairs of the parish, please
indicate that on your donation. We will keep a running
tally in the bulletin of all the contributions received
towards that fund.
Raising funds is not the most exciting of topics, but I am
grateful to all of you for your support of our parish and
for your continued prayers for your brothers and sisters
in Christ and for me, your pastor.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Patrick Reilley
Please pray for the students who will be
making their First Confession on
