TOP TEN DEVICES THAT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFEAFTER AN EMP STRIKE!Needless to say, an EMP strike against the United States remains

one of the worst possible disasters that could ever befall us. To beplunged into the dark ages without power, communicaons, or the

other vital modern conveniences that have become essenal to life

in this country would be hellish. It is esmated that over 200 million

people might eventually die from the eects of an EMP strike on this

naon; most of these deaths would occur some me aer the EMP

struck from untreated water, lack of power, and generally poor living

condions. While theres not much you can do to prevent an EMPstrike, there is quite a bit you can do right now to prepare for one.

Here is a list of devices and equipment that you need to have in order

    to survive:

    #10 FLASHLIGHTS

Life aer an EMP might just be life without power for

a long, long me. Realize that before the advent ofelectrical power, people set the rhythm of their lives

to the sun, rising early when it rose, and going to bed

shortly aer dusk. The reason for this really revolves

around the lighng situaon. The poorer one was, the

less they could waste things like candles and lamp oil

on staying up late its not as if there was TV to watch

nor was there a great abundance of reading materialfor the common folk. Basically, when it was dark, you

    went to bed.

With the dawn of the 19thcentury came gas red

lamps to those who could aord them. Some homes

started using gas xtures for light and candles and

lamps became popular forms of light, albeit ones

that needed to be replenished oen. A chandler, who

made candles and wax goods for a living, was a busy

    person.

The problem with todays society is that candles are

mainly decorave in nature and not in great supply,

    EMP SURVIVAL

nor are they appropriate for general lighng. Hardly anyone owns an

oil lamp; families that do barely know how to use them. Flashlights

and lanterns, therefore, will fetch a premium in a post EMP world.

We sll require light aer dark for a variety of reasons, securitybeing one of them. Addionally, our homes were not designed to

use anything but electric light, and many of them are overly dark and

unsafe at night. Flashlights of all types will be worth their weight in

    gold.

    Clearly there is a nite

supply of baeries andone should select a

    type of light that isnt

    too baery intensive.

    Modern LED ashlights

    are almost perfect for this

    task. They are insanely

bright (some smallmodels that t in the

    palm of your hand put

out over 200 lumens) and they are relavely easy on baeries as long

as they are not constantly used on their brightest sengs. Modern

aluminum bodied lights like Maglite and Surere brands are also

    water and shockproof. There is one caveat with these lights however;

an LED light is sensive to the E1 and E3 pulses from an EMP strikeand thus these lights must be stored in a shielded enclosure to

prevent them from being rendered useless by the strike.

Avoid incandescent bulb type hardware store ashlights as they use

bulky D and C cell baeries, dont put out much light, and are heavy

if youre on the move. If you have an opportunity to buy some of

these at a good price, by all means, do so as they may prove handy

for barter. Your own personal ashlights should be of the highestquality as there is no telling when they might be replaced again.

system and an inverter. How? Simple the cars baery is charged by

the cars own alternator. As long as the car has gas, it will charge the

baery. Normal car baeries will last for several years. Also, it has

been shown that most cars, contrary to popular belief, will remainunaected by the EMP and in the worst case need to have their

baeries disconnected and rebooted. There will be many abandoned

vehicles, baeries, and plenty of fuel not long aer an EMP, resulng

in a great plaorm to run an inverter on and provide AC power.

Why not just use a generator? There are several reasons for that.

First of all, a generator is very loud and will draw way too muchaenon to your home. It sends a signal that whoever is within

distance has fuel and something that needs to be powered, and

perhaps supplies and things of value. If need be, an inverter can

be run silently and with just the car baery (even with the baery

temporarily taken out of the car) to power something with no noise

at all. Also, an inverter can be moved from baery to baery

usually these units are not much bigger than a decent size phonebook. A generator is not portable and requires fuel as well. An idling

car is nearly silent unless youre right on top of it. Finally, an inverter

is easily shielded in case of EMP and can be put away for storage; a

generator represents a larger footprint and cannot be shielded from

the eects of EMP as easily.

    #8 FIREARMS

    When seconds count, the

    police are only minutes

    away and thats in the

    best case scenario. Aer

    an EMP strike, expect

    most rst responders to

    be dealing with their own

    loved ones rather than

    yours. Realize that the rao

of rst responders specically police - to the general populaon

is very small. A city like Los Angeles, for example, has about 10,000

ocers to keep 5+ million people in check. Not very favorable odds!

It is incumbent on youto defend your family that responsibility

does not belong to the re or police chief, nor to the mayor,

governor, or even president. The responsibility of self defense falls

squarely on your shoulders. While there are other methods of selfdefense beyond rearms, none are as praccal, eecve, or easy to

use in defense of life or property. An 80 year old man in a wheelchair

can pick up a revolver and kill an intruder he needs very lile

training to accomplish this task. Consider that maral arts and less

than lethal training, while denitely having a place, cannot ulmately

    replace rearms completely.

Post EMP, anyone of age that can carry a rearm should. Pistols will

most likely be the go-to gun for self defense. Although pistols lack

in just about every comparison to ries, they have two redeeming

features; they are available and concealable. Part of life aer an EMP

strike will involve keeping a low prole, and having an assault rie

slung across your back is not in keeping with that thought.

Bale ries in military calibers such as 5.56 NATO, .223 Remington,

.308 Winchester, and 7.62 x 39 should be kept at home and reserved

for the defense of your house from defensible posions. A rie has

capacity, knock down power, and range going for it, which makes it a

    great home weapon.

Two other types of rearms bear menon: a scoped rie for hunng

and other targets out to ranges beyond that of a bale rie, and ashotgun for close quarters defense. A scoped rie in varmint calibers

such as .22LR makes an excellent hunng weapon; .243 and similar

calibers allows one to hunt deer and people if need be, and .308 is

perfect for both man and beast alike. Shotguns, on the other hand,

should be taccally oriented with magazine extension tubes and

slings with integrated bandoliers so as to carry ammo right on the

    gun.

Each magazine fed weapon ought to have at least ve magazines per

weapon, more if you can aord it. Primarily focusing on magazine

fed weapons allows one to carry plenty of ammo and recharge the

weapon quickly. With the advent of magazine fed shotguns like

the Saiga 12, that philosophy carries forward to shotguns as well.

    EMP SURVIVAL

Magazines are reliable, hold lots of ammo, and can be replaced in

    seconds.

Most modern weapons dont really require spare parts per se, butmake sure you have cleaning supplies, as they sll need maintenance.

Also, keep your familys weapons in common calibers i.e., everyone

carries .45 ACP pistols and 5.56 NATO ries, for example. This allows

ammo interchangeability in case of emergencies. Ideally, everyone

will have the same model of weapon so as to make the magazines

    interchangeable.

    #7 AMMUNITION

The reason that ammunion is more important than

rearms in this top ten list is because ammunion

will be a commodity aer an EMP strike, potenally

more so than weapons. In your preparaons for EMP

(or any other disaster for that maer), you should

seek to stock lots of ammunion in many variedcalibers. This is because historically, ammunion

has been a barter item and doubles as currency in

some cases. Think about it for a moment when

cash is useless and silver cant be eaten, a box of .22

Long Rie is more valuable than both to a desperate

father. It can be used to hunt for food or fend o

bandits. Ammunion is literally worth its weight in

    gold.

From a praccal standpoint, you should seek to

purchase your rearms in what are called common

calibers. What is common in your neck of the woods is dependent

on several factors. A rie chambered in .243 Winchester, for example,

might be extremely common in deer country, but totally uncommon

elsewhere. You want to accomplish two goals when buyingammunion: 1) buy ammo that others want, and 2) buy ammo in

calibers that you might readily be able tofnd.

What do we mean by nd? Its prey simple, really. By purchasing,

say, a handgun in a common military or law enforcement caliber

such as 9mm, 40S&W, or .45 ACP, you will ensure that there will be

a plenful supply of such ammunion on the bodies of dead soldiers

and cops. While it sounds extremely morbid, one must accept

the baleeld mentality that not all of these people will survive.Addionally, many of these calibers are widely available at sporng

goods stores. This makes oddball calibers like .38 super, .357 SIG, and

.45 GAP, to name but a few, seem extremely unappealing.

Sure, some people who have weapons chambered in odd calibers

claim that hand loading and home reloading is the answer, but that

has some serious drawbacks. First and foremost, one must possessthe powders, primers, dies, and equipment to reload, and second,

this setup is not parcularly mobile in case one needs to move

    quickly.

Lastly, the queson inevitably arises as to how much ammunion

should be kept on hand. The answer to this is simple, but in two

parts: 1) however much you can aord, and 2) however much you

can t in your home. Realiscally, each bale rie and pistol should

have several thousand rounds per frearmon hand. If you suddenly

have to move, you will not be able to take all of this with you, as it

will weigh too much. If you are dug in place in your home, however,

youll be able to keep more ammo on hand than you can reasonably

expect to shoot its limited only by available space and funds.

    #6 HAM RADIO

    A HAM radio is an

    extremely versale

    and adaptable

    communicaons device

    it essenally has no

    parallel. Unlike walkie-

talkies that are edto preset frequencies,

    HAM radios can receive

    and transmit on

thousands of frequencies spanning many bands. Addionally, they

can talk from radio to radio, or via repeater, to just about anywhere

on the globe and some places o the globe (like the Internaonal

Space Staon). HAMs are easy to learn and the individual units arerobust and rugged.

The best part of HAM radios is the HAM radio operators themselves.

Extremely emergency and disaster oriented, HAMs are usually

prepared for just about anything, including EMPs. HAMs, being

for the most part private cizens, have the ability to set up

mobile repeaters and antennas aer a disaster to bring valuablecommunicaons into an area. These repeaters can e one HAM radio

to another in a daisy chain that can potenally span the connent.

HAM radios also have the ability to listen in and communicate on

frequencies used by rst responders. No one should be without this

    potenally life saving device.

    #5 LAPTOP COMPUTER

    The Internet is most

    likely the most powerful

    tool of knowledge ever

    invented. A computer

    accessing it can literally

    obtain any informaon

    a person wants. Aer an

    EMP strikes, the Internet

    will clearly be inaccessible

    no power means no

    Internet. So whats a

person to do? Get the knowledge right now while its sll available!

An ultra prepared person knows that transporng around volumes

of paper books is impraccal and heavy all of that informaon plusmore can t on the hard drive of a laptop which can be stored in

a shielded enclosure unl needed. One can even burn this data to

opcal DVDs, as they are impervious to the eects of EMP.

    EMP SURVIVAL

    #4 SOLAR CHARGER

An EMP will most likely severely damage the power grid, but that

doesnt mean that there wont be power available aer it strikes.

Some wise preppers will have saved some crical devices that needpower to run and will need a method of charging them. Certainly, the

list of devices above will be excellent choices for survival and will be

    easy to charge.

A solar charger is the answer to most charging needs on devices like

radios, laptops, and phones. There are many dierent types and

models of chargers available. Select one that has a combinaon ofgood capacity and a variety of connecons so as to charge a variety

of devices. These units consist mainly of a fold out solar panel with

a regulator and a cable that charges the unit in queson. Many of

these are reasonably portable and can be folded up and stored inside

a shielded container so they are ready to use just minutes aer an

    EMP strike.

A decent solar charger should ensure that you have the ability to

charge your phone, radio, laptop, or other small device for literally

years aer the me that the power grid goes down. Addionally, no

work is required to charge anything other than leaving the unit in

bright sunlight. A solar charger will be one of those wish you had

    devices aer an EMP strike!

    #3 FIRST AID KIT

    The me period

    subsequent to an EMP

    strike will be a me

    where people will live and

die based on the kind of

    medical care available.

Due to the condions andthe general lack of preparedness

of most of the populace, one will see

people die of the silliest, most treatable things

simply because they do not have access to the proper supplies.

Its only within the last hundred or so years that we have been

relavely insulated from the dangers of death from things such as

minor infecons, allergies, common illnesses, and living condions.

Diseases that were once considered lethal are now easily cured

    with over the counter medicaon.

It is simply because the general populaon is so unprepared that

you must make sure your kit is sound and ready for anything. Having

a rst aid kit also does not mean simply going to one of the big box

stores and buying an o the shelf rst aid kit and throwing it in a

closet, forgoen. Few rst aid kits that are store bought contain the

proper supplies for anything except minor cuts and bruises!

Your rst aid kit should focus on what is called taccal medicine,

focusing on large laceraons, puncture wounds (including bullet

wounds) and burns. These sorts of taccal injuries are the kinds of

injuries one would conceivably encounter post EMP. Injuries such as

these rely heavily on the use of compression bandages (not usually

supplied in rst aid kits), tourniquets (also not supplied in rst aid

kits) and things like sutures and blood coagulant. A tourniquet in and

of itself is a must in an austere environment where medical care is

    not immediately available.

    Your rst aid kit should also have the support of your family doctor;

ask your doctor if he or she will consider dispensing a prescripon for

basic anbiocs and painkillers, since these items are potenal life

savers in the case of an emergency. The advent of basic anbiocshas saved millions of people what was once a deadly infecon can

now be wiped out with a couple of pills. Get this stu now and have

your doctor instruct you on basic dosages for anbiocs as well as

    their use.

Rounding out your rst aid kit should be a healthy supply of any

prescripon medicaons you or your family takes, or even relaves

who you envision staying with you aer an EMP, as these will clearly

    not be available.

    EMP SURVIVAL

    #2 WATER PURIFIER

    You can only live around

    three days without water

-it is essenal to life. AnEMP will knock out the

    power grid and this will

lead to a lack of water in

    a very short me. This

    is because the water

    puricaon process

requires a healthy doseof electric power to funcon. Also, water pipelines use complex

electrically actuated valves and sensors which will not work aer an

EMP, meaning that there might be water in a tank up the hill, but it

will have no way of making it down to your house.

The safest way of purifying water is to boil it, but this takes lots of

fuel and is a labor intensive process. Many people will try to drinknaturally occurring surface water aer an EMP strike, water such as

ponds, lakes, rivers, and creeks. These waters are usually teeming

with pathogens and as a rule, no maer how clear or clean the water

looks to the naked eye, it must be puried. Drinking unpuried water

exposes you to deadly bacteria such as cryptosporidium and other

nasty beasts that result in anything from sever dysentery to death.

A water purier will be worth its weight in gold aer an EMP strike.

Most of these handheld units work on the principle of a piston

forcing dirty water through a membrane; what comes out the other

end is clean and safe to drink. These devices are portable and light,

meaning you can slip one in every backpack carried by the family.

While the amounts of water these lile devices put out are suitable

only for an individual, thats just ne as two or three of these

would supply the drinking water needs of an enre family on themove. These dont require any power but do require a supply of

replacement membranes, which of course you should obtain in bulk

    when you buy the unit.

Lastly, having a water purier and the ability to treat your own water

means that you can carry less water, which is opmal especially

when youre on the move. Water is one of the heaviest things youll

carry besides ammunion, so it makes sense to be able to make itwherever you go.

    #1 FARADAY CAGE

The reason why an EMP is so potenally damaging is that it sends

three rapid pulses out (two of them, at the speed of light) that inducedramac but momentary high voltages and currents within anything

conducve. This means that before the protecon systems (such as

fuses and breakers) within a device can catch the over current, they

are already fried. Since none of us will have a warning that an EMP is

about to strike and when it does, it will fry electronics at the speed

of light, it is prudent to keep all of the electronic items menoned

above in what is called Faraday Cage.

Developed by Michael Faraday in the mid 19thcentury, a Faraday cage

or enclosure is nothing more than a conducve, sealed container.

This could be something as basic as a metal garbage can! The

way it works is that the electrically conducve container deects

and protects whatever is inside of it. Most American households

already have a Faraday cage at home its called a microwave oven!

Microwave ovens are nothing more than electrically shielded Faraday

cages with a microwave transmier within that cooks the food.

Since we only want the food inside the microwave to be cooked, weshield the transmier so that microwave rays cant leak out. This

same principle makes an old microwave oven the perfect Faraday

cage. Simply put all your sensive electronics within, shut the door,

and store for posterity. There are two caveats with this: rst, ensure

that whatever is placed within the microwave is wrapped in non-

conducve material such as a towel or plasc bag. Second, cut the

cord on the microwave as the E3 pulse of the EMP likes to inducehigh voltages in long conductors.

Faraday cages can be made of any 100% conducve enclosures, use

your imaginaon, and protect everything within by wrapping it in

    layers of non-conducve material.
