Lt Fredom Rng!Few things are more exciting than Independence Day. Celebrating the 4th of July and

the Declaration of Independence is a hallmark event for any of us. Flags, firework dis-

plays, musical concerts, parades, and family gatherings typify our patriotic and national

spirit. And our church family is no exception. Freedom of religion is a grand gift to all

of us. So, in conjunction with the 40th Anniversary of the Edmond Liberty Fest Parade

held on July the 4th, 2012 we will celebrate Freedom Festand the free dis-

tribution of hot dogs, chips, water, and watermelon to parade attendees. This wonderfulevent affords us the perfect opportunity to partner with our community and demonstrate

our deep commitment to Open Doors and the practice of radical hospitality.

But thats not all. On Sunday, July 1, 2012, we will also host a unique cel-

ebration for our church family. Reflecting on our freedoms, and especially the freedom

of religion, we will gather as a thankful people in a common time for Sunday School

followed by a unified worship and a church wide, indoor picnic. There will be lots of

chicken, potato and pasta salads, beans, desserts, and plenty of Open Armsi.e., time

together as a community of faith.

So mark both dates on your calendar and plan to join us for these celebrations. Let

them be days of national patriotism, community, and faith in action. Sign-up at the table

display in the rotunda or online atfccedmond.org/freedomfestto serve with us

and/or make donations for either event.

Vacation BibleSchool (VBS) Iremember it withsuch delight. While living onthe farm, being

    away from schoolfor the summer,

and having only one other boy in theneighborhood with whom to play, VBSfilled at least one week of summer with funactivities. I loved the period for arts andcrafts, the few moments of play time, therefreshments, and the possibility of goinghome with a friend for an afternoon ofplay. Now, I admit that the Bible study wasmore than a bit slow. But it was forma-tive, for it was in VBS that I learned muchabout God and Gods love for me. I didntsee it at the time. But it was happening

none the less. And today, I know it well. This week, the children of our church

and neighborhood begin a four day, VBS

journey to that ancient land of Babylonwhere they will meet Daniel and his threefriends. They will sing, have fun, share afamily style dinner, play games, and enjoytime together. And, they will learn thatGod is with them in times of change, anxi-

ety, fear, and loneliness. They will learnthat God loves them and longs to be withthem.

To facilitate a parallel journey for therest of us, our June worship will featurethe same VBS lessons. Last Sunday, it wasDaniels grand insight that God was withhim even in the midst of a tremendousand unwanted change. join us this weekas Chris and Greg help us see how God iswith us in times of fear and anxiety. Dis-cover the wonderful ability to face such mo-ments with couragethe courage of Danielsfriends in the midst of the fire.

Oh, and dont forget to help with VBS.If in no other way, offer a prayer.
