JULY 29, 2018 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
A VIEW FROM THE PEW
Gospel Reflection: 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed
them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted.
And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, "Gather up the
fragments left over, that nothing may be lost." So they gathered them up
and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves, left by
those who had eaten (Jn 6:11-13).
Waste Not, Want Not
The earth is in danger of becoming our garbage can. It’s estimated that
U.S. citizens throw out 90 percent of what we buy within the year. A lot of
that is packaging, including the double-packaging of cardboard and plastic
around many products. Let’s clean up our act! Avoid buying over-
packaged items, as well as things you don’t really need. Embrace recycling
as an act of love for the planet and its people. Find new homes for books,
clothing, furniture, kitchen items, and technology. Shrink your footprint,
expand your heart.
“Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted!”
Big Mahalo to the youth and families who helped
pack over 200 lunches for our Food4Kids project
on Sunday, July 15. We continue to encourage all
of our parishioners to please help support our on-
going youth service project by donating food items
for
local children and youth suffering from food

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Respect Life Second Annual Symposium
2018 Annual Life Symposium - Nā Mo’olelo Ola:
Living Stories
Each person has many unique and personal stories to share.
Sometimes stories are tragic and heartbreaking: Suicide of
a family member, a close friend or relative. A young life
abducted into slavery, human trafficking or addiction. An
elderly parent whose family is in conflict over decisions to
sustain or withdraw life support. An individual or family
that are added to the list of thousands who are homeless.
This symposium addresses the educational component of
the USCCB Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities and will
address serious issues as we look through the lens of Holy
Scripture, Church teaching, and personal (life stories)
testimonies.
This symposium is suggested for parents, grandparents,
educators, clergy and religious, youth and young adults,
ministry leaders, medical professionals, and adult laity
because each of us is called to a continuing commitment to
preserve the sanctity of life.
To register, go online to: http://catholichawaii.org/diocesan-offices/respect-life/education/ or call the
Respect Life Office at 203-6722.
Registration deadline: July 31
Registration fee: $25. Scholarships are available.

SCHOOL NEWS
Mary, Star of the Sea Early Learning Center
Promoting Peace, Goodwill and Understanding in the World Through Global Educational Partnerships
in Early Childhood Education
For the past 12 years, Mary, Star of the Sea Early Learning Center and Hatsunegaoka-gaukuen (school) in Yokohama, Japan, have developed a unique international relationship with the ELC, where Japanese students ages 3-6 years from Yokohama, Japan, have the opportunity to experience a Montessori, multi-cultural school environment at the ELC. Each summer, Ms. Aki Watanabe, a teacher at the school and whose family are the school’s owners, accompanies visiting students and parents to Hawaii to experience our summer educational program. The young students from Japan have opportunities to interact with ELC students and teachers, and participate in all of our special summer activities.
