RISING STAR

Bryanston teenager Kaleigh Telfer has showed a lot of grit, determination and guts to vault from 14th to fourth in the Womens Golf South Africa Junior Rankings and make her mark on the local junior golf circuit over the last six months.

Telfer’s run began when she won the prestigious Ladies Club Championship in May and claimed the Junior Club Championship in June to become the first player to win both titles in the same calendar year. At 15, Telfer was also one of the youngest Ladies Club Championship winners since 1958 at Bryanston.

The two victories infused Telfer with the kind of confidence that saw her beat world number seven Kim Williams by six strokes for the Mpumalanga Championship title in early November and led to a wire-to-wire victory at the KwaZulu-Natal Junior Championship two weeks late. What made Telfer’s second successive victory even more impressive, is that she lost her big toenail in a moped accident just two days before the event, but played through the

pain to seal her second win this season. Named the Most Improved Junior Ladies Golfer 2012/2013 by Womens Golf South Africa, also represented Ladies Golf Gauteng at the Pick n Pay SA Womens Inter-Provincial in 2012 and 2013 and received Federation colours for representing South African at the 2013 Enjoy Jakarta World Junior Golf Championships.

We dug a little deeper to find out more about the player behind the dashing smile.

Are you the sort of golfer who sets yearly goals? if so, what goals did you set for yourself to achieve in 2013? What are your long term goals and how do you hope to achieve them?Yes. The goal I set for this year was to win my first provincial tournament. My long term goal is to be No.1 in the Junior WGSA ranking and in the top five of the Senior WGSA Ranking by the end of 2015, i.e. before I start my matric year.

How tough is the transitioning between the junior and open amateur circuits? Tell us a little about the differences between the two circuits, what are most difficult obstacles to overcome and how things are going as you head into the second half of the season? There is not really a difference between the junior and open amateur circuits in Women’s golf as most of the junior girls also play in the senior tournaments from the age of about 12. I only started playing in the provincial circuit at the age of 13 and played both senior and junior tournament from the start.

Tell us about your career highlights, especially the ones that have become treasured memories.I played in the USA at the age of 10 and 11 and then followed this up with playing in the US Kids Golf European Championships during the following three years. In Scotland, my best finishes were two 3rd places. I also was fortunate to have played in Jakarta, Indonesia earlier this year. But my greatest achievement was on the provincial circuit when I beat Kim Williams by six shots to win the Mpumalanga Ladies Championship with my personal best score of 68. Another treasured memory is going all square with Nobuhle Dlamini, who ranks sixth in the Ladies World Amateur Ranking, at the Pick & Pay Inter Provincial Match Play earlier this year.

in your opinion, what are the strengths and weaknesses of your game?I believe that the strength of my game is my long drives and my approach shots. I am also very competitive, which comes in handy during match play. I definitely need to work on my chipping around the green.

Tell us a little about the start of your golfing career.KT – I first started playing golf at school at the age of seven, chipping golf balls into hoola-hoops! I enrolled at the Gary Player Golf Experience where they taught us how to play the game. I joined SA Kids Golf at the age of nine and began to compete in monthly children’s tournaments. It was also thanks to SA Kids Golf that I qualified to play in the international tournaments in the USA and Scotland. I gained a huge amount of confidence and experience through SA Kids Golf. At the end of Grade Seven I got a new set of clubs, a new attitude and drive for the game and knocked 10 shots off my handicap. Early the next year I started playing on the provincial circuit and have never looked back!

What is the best golf advice you have ever received? The best advice I was given was from my golf coach, Lloyd Caister, who said “Golf is a marathon and not a sprint”. This made me realise that I must be patient and work hard.

Do you think the future of South African golf is in good hands? Who among the crew of amateurs out there at the moment do you think will be our future Major winners?Yes definitely. There are lots of great players coming up through the ranks. Look out for Casey Jarvis, currently age 10, as he is sure to win a Major.

What advice would you give youngsters just starting in the game?KT – Make sure you get lessons and then play as many tournaments as possible because this is where you get the best experience from.

Tell us how you feel about the Sunshine ladies Tour launching next year and the opportunity for amateurs to compete against the professionals?I think this is fantastic for the ladies as now we have the chance to measure ourselves against the pros, right here in South Africa.

Who are your golfing idols and why?Luke Donald is my one idol, because he stays very calm and level headed and a good example of a golfer that didn’t need to be a Major winner to be the world number one. My other idol is Nobuhle Dlamini, who has a great work ethic, a very long drive and is an inspiration to us younger players.

We hear that golf is not only thing you’re good at?I’m a serious cricket fan and I played Girls Cricket for four years and captained my U-13 side in 2011. I currently play water-polo, soccer and hockey for the first teams at St Peters College.

Defending champions Gauteng North provided manager Andre Louw the strong start he hoped for by scoring a solid victory in Monday’s opening round of the South African Junior Interprovincial at Bellville Golf Club.

Roux’s eight charges drew level with A-Division debutants Limpopo in the morning foursomes, but Adriel Poonan, Stefan Wears-Taylor, Nicholaus Frade, Albert Venter and Keegan de Lange secured the victories in the singles to put the 2012 champions on the front foot with a 7-5 result.

Twelve months ago, the Gauteng North junior squad sparked a winning run for their union with victory at Paarl Golf Club. Although Louw tries to downplay the statistics, his players are determined to keep the winning run going.

“After the juniors claimed the SA Junior IPT, the U-23 team followed suit,” Louw explained.

“Then our premier team won the SA IPT in Rustenburg and the ladies the SA Women’s IPT for a seventh consecutive time in Port Elizabeth. Our men also won the International Teams championship and our ladies the 72-Hole Teams Championship.

“It’s only natural that the juniors feel they have to keep the run going and finish the season on a high note for the union.”

Poonan beat Ben Harris 2-up, Wears-Taylor defeated Stefan De Beer 1-up, Corne Olivier went down 3&2 to Nicholaus Frade, Venter defeated Franco van Zyl 2&1 and Keegan de Lange beat Jaco Linde 3&2.

“The matches were very tight and we had quite a bit of pressure on us, but I am really proud of the way the guys rallied in the singles to secure the first two points for us,” Louw said.

“Match play is so unpredictable, but every member of the team gave his best effort and, as a manager, that is all you can ask from your team.”

In the other A-Division matches, Central Gauteng and Ekurhuleni drew 6-all, while hosts Western Province thumped Eastern Province 8.5-3.5 to edge out Gauteng North on game points for the top spot on the A-Division log.

Province held a 3-1 lead after the foursomes and Hayden Garcia, Michael Sherriff, Altin van der Merwe and Ian Snyman added five points to their tally in the singles.

However, Lukas Pretorious, Wian van Aswegen and Alwyn Griebenow stemmed the bleeding for Eastern Province by halving their matches against Noel Anderson, Robert Bougas and Luke Trocado respectively.

Meanwhile Southern Cape enjoyed a dream start in the B-Division battle for promotion.

Gauteng draws first blood at the

SA Junior IPTThe Garden Route side handed Border an 8-4 drubbing and

pounded Mpumalanga 9.5-2.5.Significantly, there were no obvious stars in the Garden Route

side, but rather a squad that played solidly, both as individuals and as a unit.

The team scored a whitewash in the both foursomes, while Johan Oosthuizen, Cyril Botha, Cameron Moralee and Jovan Rebula won their singles matches against both opposing sides.Border managed to exact some revenge, though, by defeating Mpumalanga 8.5-3.5.

In the other three-way match, KwaZulu-Natal drew 6-all with North West, who beat Boland 6.5-5.5. But Boland team also levelled the playing field by taking down KZN 7-5. Western Province’s Altin van der Merwe and Cara Gorlei both claimed top three finishes for South Africa at the 5th Albatross International Junior Golf Championship in India on Friday.

Van der Merwe from Bellville surged to second place with a 73 at the Jaypee Greens Golf Club and the 17-year-old sealed a runner-up finish in the Boys U-18 Division with successive 73.

Van der Merwe turned in 37 after birdies at the fourth and sixth holes. He birdied the first two holes on the back nine and the par-five 13th, but dropped shots at the 14th, 16th and 17th holes to complete the inward nine in 36 strokes.

The recent Durbanville Open champion finished on four-over-par 220, seven shots behind India’s Natchapol Srinoon, who completed a wire-to-wire victory with rounds of 73-72-68.

Meanwhile Gorlei from Milnerton began the final round in fifth place after earlier rounds of 79 and 77. The 17-year-

old Province golfer closed with a 78 to take third on 220 and finished 14 strokes behind Girls U-18 Division champion, Kanyalak Preedasutthijjt from India, who claimed a one stroke victory on 220 with rounds of 75-72-73.

Gorlei’s compatriot Bianca Theron from Boland tied for eighth on 247.

The final South African junior in the group, and the youngest at just 11 years old, faired equally well in his international debut.

Reigning Nomads SA Boys U-13 champion Tristan Galant carded round of 77 and 80 and began the final round of the Boys U-13 Division five shots off the pace from joint leaders Aadil Bedi and Harshjeet Singh Sethi.

The Belhar golfer closed with an 83 to take eighth spot on 239 in the 27-man field, with Bedi defeating Phasin Vichttchareonpaisarn by two shots for the title.

GOLF INSTRUCTION

In this video article we investigate what it takes to hit straighter, longer shots. Most junior golfers always try to hit the ball longer or straighter by using

the wrong methods, such as moving the body around too much. The most efficient power comes a solid coil around a stable spine and then transferring the power from

the body to the club through the release of the arms and wrists.

Here we focus on agility, the ability to move quickly and to change body positions efficiently. The drills demonstrated in the video encourage, in technical terms, a much better release of the golf club as well as an improvement in timing.

This video will help you to improve your technique by doing drills to encourage the correct release. This results in more club head speed and also a squarer clubface at impact, hence straighter, longer shots.

Keep following TGSE for more videos on how you can improve not just your agility, but also your entire golf game.

Choosing the right golf instructor to improve your game

By Holly Taylor, Director of

PGA Center for Golf Learning &

Performance

When looking to improve your golf game, choosing the right instructor is a very important decision. There are several factors that come into play but it’s rewarding to hear when a player has made the effort to get help from a professional to overcome a hurdle in their game. Below are recommendations on deciding which golf instructor is the best fit for you.

5 Do’s• Determine your level of commitment – PGA Professionals

don’t expect to turn you into a PGA Tour player but it does help for them to know if you are looking to break 100 or get down under a five handicap. There is certainly a big difference in the amount of time and energy you will need to reach either goal.

• If you are a beginner, try Get Golf Ready – The PGA of America offers Get Golf Ready at more than 2,300 facilities and it includes five group lessons for only $99. It’s an easy and affordable way to start playing the “game of a lifetime.” Each session focuses on a variety of golf skills including short game (putting, chipping. pitching), full swing (irons, woods) and course management.

• Choose someone in your price range – Know how much you are looking to spend. Prices do vary depending on the level of instructor and their experience.

• Start small then think big – If you are new to the game, take a 30 minute lesson first and make sure you make a connection with your instructor. If it doesn’t work out, don’t be afraid to try another instructor! The lesson is about you and enjoying the game.

• Have fun – Don’t be nervous and be sure to laugh. Golf is a wonderful game and it takes time to improve and become consistent. Bring a friend and share the experience in a low-pressure environment. It makes it more affordable and fun.

5 Don’t’s• Don’t be opposed to group clinics – Learning with others is

a great way to challenge yourself to improve with your peers.• Don’t be picky with a male vs. female instructor, or vice

versa – Be open to receiving a lesson from either. The most important thing is to understand their level of experience but also to have fun while improving your game.

• Don’t rely on one lesson – If you purchase a bundle of lessons, it could be much cheaper. Don’t expect to transform your game after one lesson so make sure you come with an open mind and great amount of patience.

• Don’t think your right all the time – Instructors like students who want to learn so it’s important to have an open mind during lessons.

• Don’t look too far – There are great golf instructors in your local community so do your research and see if you can find someone in your area.

Stand...Golf is like shampoo instructions

Our focus point last month was to introduce the concept of kinematic sequence and the importance thereof. With the use of 3D data collected we can look at how golfers generate speed and transfer the speed or energy throughout their bodies to get the best possible results, and repeatability. Research has shown that the all great ball strikers have the same kinematic sequence of generating speed and transferring speed throughout their bodies.

The stand out point is that most great ball strikers begin by generating speed from their lower body and transferring that speed through their torso, into their arms and then ultimately into the club.

As seen in the photo’s below, having a good kinematic sequence in

a simple action, like throwing a ball, is crucial. In photo 1A – 1C a good sequence is followed. Load on the right with the arm, pulled back, step on the left and then whip the arm through. On the other side of the continuum is the incorrect sequence – load on the right, whip the arm

through, and then transfer the weight on to the left side (photo 2A – 2C).

As shown in the graph below, a comparison was made between the acceleration and deceleration patterns of professional and amateur players. With the pro swing from the top of the swing, the highest

speed was reached with the club at impact, then follows the arm, the thorax and lastly the pelvis. With the

two amateur swings, there is a distinct difference in patterns, especially on the last graphs, where there is just no real acceleration or deceleration. As indicated in photo 3A, a good load to the left was achieved at the top of the backswing with the space increasing between my left bum and the alignment stick, in the next photo (3B) the space has decrease without the arms and thorax and unwinding. Please remember in a real time swing the difference between one segment pushing of another segment happens in a split second.

Photo 2C

Sequence is the key to repeatability, which can potentially lead to consistent energy transfer, which is the key to power!!

BE hAPPY

if you’re looking for simple ways to raise your happiness level, try one of these quick mood boosters to help you feel more positive … right now.

We often find ourselves running around trying to balance our busy schedules; work, studies, gym, golf practice and more. I’ve realized that sometimes I need to take a “time out” to boost my mood

and recharge my energy levels. If you’re like me, you’ve been in a situation where a busy lifestyle gets the best of you. Next time your demanding schedule has you stressed out and desperate for a break, give one of Samantha Clayton’s (Herbalife Fitness Expert) seven instant mood boosters a try. You’ll discover how the simple things in life can truly have a positive impact on your day.

7 feel-good tips that will lift your mood – now!Mood boosting tip 1: Practice belly breathingPractice conscious breathing by inhaling through your nose, letting the air expand into your tummy, then breathing out through your mouth. Whether you’re at work or running around on a busy day, taking a break for 5-10 conscious breaths can calm your mind while giving you a rejuvenating time out.

Mood boosting tip 2: Schedule a stretching breakInstead of taking a coffee break, try taking a stretching break. You can do simple neck rolls and arm stretches from the comfort of your study chair or as you stand on the driving range – wherever you are! Simple movement throughout the day can refresh your mind and relieve muscle tension.

Mood boosting tip 3: Get organized wherever you areStress can be self-inflicted, sometimes caused by misplacing or losing your belongings. Boosting your mood starts with relieving your stress level. Carve out some time in your schedule to get organized – whether you’re at home, at work, or in the car. Just a few minutes to get things in order each day can lead to a better mood overall.

Mood boosting tip 4: Try coordination drillsImproved health involves your body and your brain. Doing exercises that involve working your upper body and lower body at the same time, such as lunges with a shoulder press, will speed up your workout and give your brainpower a boost! Next time you work out, try a few moves that challenge your coordination. Mood boosting tip 5: Smile oftenYour body releases endorphins every time you smile, even if you’re faking it! Spend time every day consciously smiling at people, it will instantly boost your mood, and give your face muscles a workout. The added bonus is that your smile may improve other people’s mood too because they’ll probably smile back at you!

Mood boosting tip 6: Take a power walkYou may think that a two minute walk can’t possibly impact your mood or your health, but a fast paced walk, even if it’s just for a few minutes, can improve your cardiovascular health. If you only have a few minutes, make time for a quick, brisk walk. By doing something different – particularly on days when you are practicing on the Range – you may be able to reduce stress and tension. Try to accumulate at least 30 minutes of walking throughout the day.

Mood boosting tip 7: Try a quick interval routineTry an interval workout using some old school moves: complete 30 seconds of four simple exercises. You will give your energy level a boost by releasing endorphins into your blood stream, no matter the length of your workout. Here’s a simple interval routine to try:- Jumping jacks (30 seconds)- Squats (30 seconds)- Push ups (30 seconds)- Crunches (30 seconds)

We live in a fast-paced world that can feel stressful at times. Once you become overwhelmed with stress, it can start interfering with other areas of your life and can have a negative impact on your health. It’s important to take good care of your mental and physical wellbeing. Though it can be a struggle to find balance in life, I hope Samantha’s seven fitness focused mood boosters help make you feel great.

i often see players coming down to the driving range and spending time hitting balls for hours on end but seldom spending time on the putting green. The thrill of seeing how far you can hit the ball won’t count for much if you don’t make the putts.

Lower your SCORE...

Here are some numbers: Reality is if a player averages 2 putts per green then over 18 holes this counts for 36 shots. Add a few 3 putts and your score quickly goes up. If you do the sums and add your 18 tee shots your score

is already on 54. If the course has 10xpar 4’s then add an additional 10 shots for the approaches, this will take the score up to 64. Now for the Par 5’s, if you play 2-3 shots from your drive to get to the green then you can add an additional 8-10 or more shots taking the score up to 72. Now take into account when you missed the green and had to make a bunker shot or a recovery chip. These extra shots just add up and add up and could end up being as many as 20 extra shots or more. Let’s use these figures from one of our students as an example. John’s average score is between 95 and 105.

with clever practice

We looked at his statistics over a few games and found the following information:Fairways hit: 6 out of 14 (exclude the par 3’s)Greens in regulation (on a par 3 in 1, par 4 in 2, par 5 in 3): 12 out of 18Average putts: 39-45

We set up a putting program for John to try and lower his amount of putts and now he is consistently hitting scores in the 90’s with an average of 30/35 putts. The next step for John will be

his greens in regulation and his short game.

A tip for all players is to start your practice session on the putting green. First start with some short putt’s getting the feeling for your stroke and getting confident with it. Move out to about 2-3meters. Practice on differ-ent slopes, up-hill, down-hill and side sloping putts. Prac-tice the long putts trying to get them into an area around the hole that you know will be a certain second putt. (see pictures)

Next time you watch golf on the TV watch your favor-ite player and see how many putts they average. Sergio Garcia’s current average on the PGA Tour is 27.88.
