Welcome From the Desk of NGJT Director Joe Canny, PGA

Cover Photo: NJGT Farmers Mutual Event at Holmes GC on June 19th.

The calendar has turned to July which means that we are already half done with the 2014 NJGT Season. It is crazy how fast that goes. Though it is fun to look back at a great June, let’s take a look at some exciting things coming up this July:

Central Nebraska Junior Amateur – July 10th & 11th

Two-day event which serves as the only premier event for the 9-Hole Divisions as well as ranked by JuniorGolfScore-board for those interested in playing college golf.

New Events:

Green Valley Golf Course Sioux City, IA - July 14th Awarii Dunes Golf Club Axtell, NE - July 16th Wildwood Golf Course Nebraska City, NE – July 18th NJGT & NJGT TEAM GOLF Championships

Look to NJGT.org under the points category to see how many invites will be sent to each division. I have also been getting a lot of calls inquiring about volunteering with the NJGT for regular events or TEAM GOLF. If interested please just shoot me an email. We rely heavily on volunteers to keep the prices low for all our events. Thank you once again for your participation in the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour and best of luck in the home stretch! Sincerely,

Joe Canny, PGA Junior Golf Director – NJGT (402) 730-8364 [email protected]

Featured FacilityFour Steps to Make More Putts

√ GET THE SPEED BEFORE YOU PLAY. Green speeds are rarely the same from day to day, and the speed can change from morning to afternoon as the greens dry out. Al-ways stroke a few downhill putts on the practice green to get a sense of how delicate you need to be. It's all about getting a feel.

√ CHECK YOUR BALL POSITION. You always want to reduce the amount of skid in your putts. It's really important when you're putting downhill, because it's hard to judge speed if your ball starts off with a hop or two. To help roll it better, play the ball slightly forward of center in your stance. This helps you hit up on the ball a little, and start a forward roll.

√ FOCUS ON THE LINE. The speed you hit the putt should be locked into your head. It's a feel thing. But the line is really important, especially on downhill putts, because for the most part you just have to get the ball rolling on that line, and gravity will do the rest. I pick a line a foot and a half in front of the ball, see the line in your mind, and then get the ball started like it's on a track.

√ ONE FOOT, MAX. When you're judging speed on a downhill putt, you want the ball trickling as it gets to the hole. If you miss, you don't want it to go any farther than a foot past the cup. Missing is never good, but look on the bright side: You've got an uphill putt coming back. We love supporting the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour each season and look forward to seeing you at a GolfTEC Premier Event this summer. To learn more about GolfTEC of Omaha please click HERE.

Fitness Facts Presented by The PGA Sports Academy powered by UnitedHealthcare

Start the following routine about 15-20 minutes before you tee-off. It loses its effect if you spend 15-20 minutes afterwards getting your bag and clubs together. You should be changed and ready to play so that you tee-off within 5 minutes of finishing this warm up.

To find a PGA Sports Academy program near you, visit PlayGolfAmerica.com.

Golf Stretching Exercises and Warm Up Routine

STEP 1 - Walking for 3-5 Minutes Walk briskly for 3-5 minutes, either around the car park or a quiet area of the course. You might want to walk from your car to the locker room and back a few times.

STEP 2 - Supported Squats This exercise will elevate your heart rate and increase blood flow to the major muscle groups.

1. Hold a short club (i.e. 8 iron) overhead with hands at either end. Arms should be fully stretched directly above you. 2. Squat down until your thighs are almost parallel to the ground and stand up. Repeat 10 times. 3. Rest and repeat again. For more advanced players you can do this supported, single leg squat instead…

1. Start by standing and bracing against a golf club such as a 2 or 3 iron. 2. Bring your left foot up and place across your opposite knee. Your knee will be bent at 90 degrees. 3. Squat down until your knee is almost parallel to the ground, stand up and repeat 10 times. 4. Return to the starting position and repeat with the other leg.

STEP 3 - Standing Shoulder Stretch 1. Stand with a shoulder width stance and place both hands on the end of the club. 2. Lean forward keeping your back flat until you feel a stretch in your shoulders. 3. Hold for 10 seconds and relax. Repeat a total of 3 times.

STEP 4 - Wrist Extensions 1. Stand with your right arm extended straight out. 2. Pull back your fingers with the other hand until you feel a stretch in your forearm. 3. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat with the other wrist. Repeat again for each wrist.

STEP 5 - Practice Swings Complete 2-3 minutes of practice swings working on any techniques, or swing thoughts you may have been given. It's important not to practice technique with a weighted club or two clubs at this stage. You are now warmed up physically and this time is about sharpening your swing and reminding your-self of any coaching points to work on during the round. It is also a good idea to rest completely for about 2 minutes before you tee-off. Avoid walking up to the tee out of breath as this will compromise your ability to control your swing.

What is FORE!? As an extension of other initiatives that first introduce the game, the Nebraska Golf Association created FORE!, an access program that provides junior golfers the opportunity to play golf more frequently at participating NGA member clubs during the months of May, June, July and August. FORE! members can play par-ticipating courses across the state for just $4 per round.

Who’s eligible for FORE! membership? FORE! is not simply a discount card. Although the NGA wants to be as inclusive as possible it also wants members that have been introduced to the game through some sort of instruction and have a basic understanding of both the Rules of Golf and proper Etiquette. That said we require that FORE! applicants meet the following age and eligibility cri-teria:

Age: No minimum age, a golfer is no longer eligible for membership once they hit the date of September 1 following graduation from sec-ondary school (high school). Eligibility: Golfer must meet one of four eligibility requirements that meet the criteria of proper introduction:

• 2014 participant in one of the following certified programs: First Tee; Golf ‘N’ Schools; Great Golf Expectations; LPGA/USGA Girls Golf; NGA Youth on Course; Nebraska Junior Golf Tour; Panhandle Junior Golf Tour and PGA/USGA Sports Academy.

• 2014 participant in a junior golf program at an NGA member club.

• 2013-2014 high school golf team participant

• Other golfers approved by senior official at NGA member club (i.e. PGA Professional or Club Manager).

How do eligible golfers join the FORE! program? Applications are available on the FORE! web site (nebgolf.org/FORE), in both paper and online forms. The fee for membership is $10, and in

addition to their membership cards, FORE! members receive a NGA membership.

Where can FORE! rounds be played? FORE! is a statewide initiative in 2014, and is available in most regions of the state with over 40 participating golf cours-es. For a full list of participating courses, including contact information, please visit the FORE! website at nebgolf.org/FORE.

How is the FORE! program funded? The FORE! program is funded by the Nebraska Golf Foundation, whose mission is to promote the growth of golf in Ne-braska with an emphasis on making the game and its life-enhancing values accessible to youth. A sizable donation was made to the NGF from the 2013 U.S. Senior Open Championship in support of FORE! In addition, the NGF earmarks a portion of its own fundraising efforts to support the program.
