Letter from NGJT Director Joe Canny, PGA We have been seeing record turnout and record scores at many of our first events two weeks into the season. I’ve had the opportunity to be at a number of the events and it has been a pleasure to meet many of you. I plan to attend many more events in each market and look forward to speaking with those I haven’t had a chance to meet. Something that has really impressed the golf courses is how many of you have been traveling the entire state to play in events away from home. I think this is great! One of the benefits of be-ing a NJGT Member is you have the option to play a lot of differ-ent courses you might not otherwise have the opportunity to play at a very affordable rate. The season is still young and I would encourage you if you haven’t already, make a day of trav-eling to an out-of-town event. Courses off the beaten path that are definitely worth the trip include Whispering Creek in Sioux City, Heritage Hills in McCook, York Country Club, Meadowlark Hills, Eldorado Hills and more. Get together with your family and plan a “stay-cation” right here in Nebraska!

While on the topic of “stay-cations” in Nebraska, it is a great time to mention the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour’s newest sponsor, The Prairie Club in Valentine, Nebraska. The Prairie Club, with two highly rated 18-hole golf courses is open to the public and offers unbelievable stay and play packages. I would strongly recommend a weekend getaway to The Prai-rie Club as it is an experience unlike anything else. Prairie Club also has a 10-hole short course called the “Horse Course” as it is set up for golf’s version of the fa-mous basketball game HORSE. WorldGolf.com states that

the Horse Course rivals the best par-3 layouts in all of golf and can be as short as 485 yards or stretched all the way to 1,125 yards. The Horse Course is free to play with half of all donations received going toward scholarships for Valentine High School students and the other half supporting the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour and other junior golf initiatives in Ne-braska. Thank you all for your participation in the 2013 Nebraska Junior Golf Tour and I look forward to seeing you at a future event. Joe Canny, PGA

Junior Golf Director – NJGT [email protected]

York Country Club Featured Facility

York Country Club is one of Nebraska’s more traditional country clubs with a history that dates back to 1919. York CC will host the NJGT on July 2nd and it is a strong recommendation from the entire NJGT Staff.

York Country Club has the feel of an early 20th century country club with tree lined fairways and small greens which places and emphasis on accuracy. It is also very unique in that the back nine is less than 25 years old and the clubhouse less than 15 years old. This combination of traditional and new makes this golfing experience one you will want to return to each year. Whether you are from Lincoln, Omaha, Northeast Nebraska or Western Nebraska; you are going to want to make the trip!

For more information on York Country Club, visit http://www.yorkcountryclub.net/index.html.

My name is Jo Baldwin. I live in Kearney and I am one of the Site Directors for the Western and Central Nebraska NJGT. My husband, Mike, and I have two girls and one boy all in their twenties. In the summer I golf, garden, and golf and my winters consist of skiing, cooking, bridge and reading. I am a member of the Nebraska Women's Amateur Golf Association Executive Board and have played in NWAGA events. The last three years I have attended the NGA Rules Sessions and volunteered as a rules official at the Nebraska high school state golf tournaments each spring and fall.

Two of our children played in summer Pepsi Tour events and golfed in high school and competed in four state golf tournaments. It is now time for me to show my appreciation to all those volunteers by becoming the volunteer. I have worked two of the NJGT 2013 tour-naments and am having a blast. Meeting the golf pros, helpers and grounds crews at each

of the tournament sites and seeing their dedication to the youth is refreshing. By far the best part of being a part of the NJGT organization is meeting all the kids and their parents.

‘s Tour Tips

This week’s GolfTEC Tour Tip comes from the entire staff at GolfTEC of Omaha, which features 5 profession-al instructors who have given over 10,000 lessons.

While instructing young golfers a common area that needs improvement is club selection around the green. It seems that many of today’s golfers will automatically use a sand wedge or lob wedge when they get around the green. Using your most lofted club around the green is important when you have to carry the ball a certain distance and stop it quickly, but when you have a lot of green to work it is better to use a less lofted club like a gap wedge, pitching wedge or even an iron. Your margin of error with these clubs will be much less on average than the lofted club.

During this week’s PGA Tour Event, watch today’s best shot makers like Tiger Woods, Ricky Fowler, Rory McIl-roy and others. You will see creativity in the clubs used around the green which will maximize their chances of success. Spend an afternoon practicing your chipping with different clubs so at the next NJGT event you will be prepared to get up and down.

All Nebraska Junior Golf Tour Members receive a 60-Minute Performance Evaluation for $69 and 20% off all lesson plans and programs. Mention you are a NJGT Member when scheduling your first 60-minute evalua-tion. Offer good until August 31, 2013. Book a lesson with Mark Stava or any of the experienced instructors at GolfTEC Omaha today! To learn more about GolfTEC Omaha, meet the instruc-tors and book a lesson; CLICK HERE.

Fitness Facts The golf swing requires the body’s muscles to work together in harmony in order to deliver power and accuracy for each golf shot. The following exer-cises will help develop strength and coordination in your feet, legs, back and abdomen, which are key power sources in your golf swing.

A. Plank with Leg Raises

B. Plank with Arm and Leg Raise

C. Back Extensions

D. Side Hip Raise

Presented by The PGA Sports Academy powered by UnitedHealthcare

To find a PGA Sports Academy program near you, visit PlayGolfAmerica.com.

Go into a pushup position with your hands underneath your shoulders and your elbows locked. Keep your body in a straight line, focusing on squeezing your glutes and restricting your lower back from arching. Raise one leg about six inches off the ground, squeezing your glute. Be careful to not lift the leg too high or allow your hips

to rotate. It will cause your lower back to round, defeating the purpose of the exercise. Lower the leg and repeat with the other side.

Go into a pushup position with your hands underneath your shoulders and your elbows locked. Keep your body in a straight line, focusing on squeezing your glutes and restricting your lower back from arching. Raise one arm and one leg off the ground, reaching it over your head. Keep your shoulders and hips square to the ground. Lower the leg and arm then repeat with the other side.

Lie on your stomach with your arms behind your head. First, begin by squeezing your glutes, and then pinch your shoulder blades

together. Next, raise your upper body off the floor as you exhale through your

mouth; keep your legs on the ground. Hold for 1-2 seconds. Slowly return to your start position.

Lay on your right side with your right elbow underneath you. Feet are on top of each other.

Raise your body up so that your weight is supported by your right forearm and the side of your right foot.

Keep your body in a straight line, focusing on keeping your shoulders, hips and feet in a straight line.

Continue to raise and lower your hips for the prescribed number of repetitions.

FORE! is a statewide initiative al-lowing deserving youth the oppor-tunity to play some of the state's best courses for $4 putting to use the life skills and values training they learn prior to membership. FORE! began in 2012 as a pilot pro-gram in the Omaha Metropolitan area. This year all NJGT Members age 7-17 can participate in markets such as Lincoln, Kearney, Omaha, Grand Island and more from June through August.

Golfers age 7-11 are classified as “Supervised Access” members and must be accompanied by an adult when they play at an 18-hole facility. They may play at 9-hole facilities without restriction. Golfers age 12-17 are either classified as “Supervised Access” or “Full Access” based on certified program director’s recommendation. “Full Access” members may play each participating facility without adult supervision. FORE! membership includes membership in the Nebraska Golf Association and the benefits that accompany it.

For more information on FORE! and to complete an ap-plication, Visit NebGolf.org today!

FORE! Application Available

As an NJGT Member you re-ceive a membership into the Nebraska Golf Association and a USGA Handicap. A Handicap Index is computed using your ten best scores of your most recent twenty scores and the appropriate USGA Course Rat-ing and Slope Rating for each course played. This number in-dicates the potential ability of a player as compared to an ex-pert player on a course of aver-age difficulty. A minimum of five 18-hole attested scores are required to establish a Handi-cap Index. The more scores you post the more accurate your Handicap Index will become. You have the ability to post 9-

hole and 18-hole scores.

All rounds played in NJGT Tournaments will be auto-matically posted to your Handicap Index. You can also post scores from your practice rounds, play with family/friends and other events. To begin posting scores to your record visit NebGolf.org.
