—St. John of God Lord, I do not ask that I never be afflicted, but only that you never abandon me in affliction.

—St. Bernadette Soubirous Pride makes us hate our equals because they are our equals; our inferiors from fear that they may equal us; our superiors because they are above us.

NO COMPARISONS How many times have we read or heard about someone who's gotten into trouble--maybe even fired from a job--because of a brush with the law? While our "Christian" minds tell us to be sorry and even pray for the person, a little voice inside our heads may also be saying, "I'm glad I would never do anything like that." And perhaps we wouldn't. But are there some things we do that are still not pleasing in God's eyes? Today's readings caution us not to look so intently at someone else's wrongdoing that we overlook our own weaknesses and shortcomings. When we measure ourselves against the worst people we can think of, we come out looking pretty good. There is a danger, however, in using someone else's behavior as a way of reflecting our own goodness. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

“Be merciful to me, a sinner” ought to be the words on the lips of each of us. In reality we are all sinners whether we know it or not. In fact. St. John said, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” The whole reason Jesus came down from heaven was to forgive us of our sins. If we see ourselves as sinless then why did God die on the cross? I surmise that one strong reason why so few go to church or attend the Sacrament of Reconciliation is that we as a culture have lost the sense of sin. Psychology and cultural undercur-rents have declared much of our wrong doing as not sin but ra-ther as mistakes, psychological defect, or poor upbringing. We have even gone so far as to declared what was sinful now to be normal or alternative behavior. But these trends and pseudosci-ence will pass as do all falsehoods, yet in the meantime many souls will be lost, losing out on the chance to repent, reform and live in the freedom of faith in Jesus our Savior. We are all sinners, from the Pope to Trump, from Mother St. Teresa to the common thief in the need of a merciful and forgiv-ing God who calls us to repentance and eternal life. Pray that we have the courage and humility to recognize our sinfulness and ask God for forgiveness.

Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

OFFERING MASSES FOR THE REPOSE OF SOULS It is customary not only to visit the graves of our dearly departed, but also to have Masses offered for the eternal repose of their souls. Having a Mass offered for the repose of a soul, and offering our own prayers, is more beneficial and comforting than a card or bouquet of flowers. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC): “From the beginning the church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eu-charistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.” Visit the Rectory Office (201-343-5170) to have a Mass offered for a soul who may need your prayers to be freed from Purgatory and enter Paradise! There are many Masses available for this year.

Family Promise Shelter HT Human Concerns will be working with St Joe's in Bogota and St Anastasia's in Teaneck to host families through the Fami-ly Promise Shelter at St Anastasia's Little Church on Nov. 8 & 9. We’re looking for volunteers to cook and/or serve dinner for up to 5 families. Menus are coordinated among the cooks, with each cook responsible for one dish of the dinner. Cooking is done in your home and the food is dropped off at St Anastasia's about 6pm. The volunteers cooking the food do not necessarily have to be the ones serving the food. Servers would be at the shelter from 6-8pm. If you are interested in helping our neigh-bors who reside at this shelter temporarily, there is a sign up sheet at the back of the church. Questions? Call or text Denise Gordon, 201-774-8805.
