Platform relationship and

the future of video stories

The concept of platform relationship• Publishers now have a range of

platforms to choose from to get digital content in front of consumers. Facebook hosts publishers’ content on Instant Articles, Apple is pushing out stories through its News app and Snapchat is showcasing media outlets’ videos and articles on its Discover feature.• A new job function is rapidly being

created: the platform relationship specialist.

A platform relationship manager. A new communication job is created. For example, a fashion promotion agency called Condé Nast International posted an ad:“a job opening for a platform relationships manager to help coordinate and deepen its relationships with social media and video platforms, messaging apps and even hardware manufacturers.”

However, the basic comes from three means of expressions, print, audio and video.

Future of online video story?• What do you think?• I think one of the key is be at the

right place, and to synchronize what you see with what you tell. • Be noted that snap chat video

storytelling is now in trend because of mobile devices. • Next one may be this:

Video revolution and democracy1. The most recent trend of video is that the cost of producing a video

story and sharing has been reduced dramatically. It has changed the news ecology.

2. In the first wave of online video, people were receivers of video message. They could get video everywhere. That was a huge change itself. Now, each person is a producer of video message. This impact is even bigger.

What is the impact on society?

Quantity vs. Quality• In the new information environment, perfection is not necessary for

video production. • Quick and less polished video content on news sites often draws

bigger audience, becomes viral.• This means video storytelling has to reinvent itself in the digital age,

not emulate broadcasting network of movies.• Jeff argues

In fact, TV stations are emulating backpack style.

Case 1: Snapchat

Potentials of Snapchat journalism. • The audience is engaged. Because users have to press and hold to

watch Snapchat Stories, advertisers will know whether their ads are being watched. • Intentional, not accidental. A Snapchat user has to go through a couple

of screens to find a story to watch. It is a very intentional act. • The right demographic. More than 60% of Snapchat users are in the

18-to-24 age group. • They are nearly "live." Advertisers love to advertise against live

content.• They are broadcast scale. Expanding audience.

In January 2015, Snapchat launched Discover

• https://youtu.be/UbOMqA2AOIk• https://youtu.be/guGvV8LCx7o• Snapchat Discover is a new way

to explore news from major media outlets. • Moreover, Snapchat is hiring

news people, preparing itself to do its own reporting.

Some facts about Snapchat news• 11 launch partners provide five articles a day in a Snapchat-friendly

format (short and visual with a vertical layout).• Snapchat lets publishers keep 100% of the revenue if they sell an ad

campaign for the platform and 40% if Snapchat sells it.• Snapchat also has an internal team producing original videos and

short news stories for the app. CNN political reporter Peter Hamby was just poached to be the startup's head of news.• About 15 million people globally view Snapchat stories each day,

Hamby said.

Mobile Data Consumption Skyrocketing Following Snapchat Discover’s Launch

Revival• Former Stanford students Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy launched

Snapchat in 2011 as a way to “share awkward selfies and funny photos with [their] friends.” according to the Snapchat site blog. • Before the boom, Snapchat’s traffic has declined for several months,

an indication that the current combination of news, ephemeral nude photos, and advertising will be its business model for some time.

Moving into hard news• https://youtu.be/IP1UknjKMDQ• This month, as millions of Muslims made the annual Hajj to Mecca,

Snapchat set up a Live Story around the pilgrimage.• Snapchat let users submit photos or short videos that its editors then

curated into a story it showcased to its users around the world.• At CNN, we would cover an event or an interview with 1 or 2 camera.

At Snapchat, we have everyone’s camera at our disposal.” - @PeterHamby

Case 2: Virtual reality

Wearables may tell a story in virtual reality. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=GSbkn6mCfXE• https://vimeo.com/86717334• You can visit a stunning Tuscan

estate today occupied by a brick building that looked like it had been there for centuries. I can climb through one of its many windows and stand near a running fountain. This all happens as I sit at a desk in my office in New York City.

The trend in the mainstream media• The New York Times, for example, has created a mobile app that

allows readers to explore the location of their stories in full 360 degree view.

How to Experience a New Form of Storytelling From The Times• BBC Created an exhibition site, Taster• Journalism schools are building studios.

Case 3 Drones

New movements: pan and tilt of drones• Combining basic shots and draw on the unique perspective of the

drone video camera, we can produce a variety of creative shots. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jJhEeZJFa4U• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZQfkglXtjg&feature=player_embedded

• Typical movement: find relevant objects to use in the foreground; for instance, when revealing a larger scene, start flying from behind a foreground subject.
