Introduction: What is NECAP?

The New England Common Assessment Program is the result of a collaboration among New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and Maine to build a set of assessments for grades 3-8 and 11 in order to meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind.

• NECAP assesses reading and math in grades 3-8 and 11, writing in grades 5, 8, and 11, and science in grades 4, 8 & 11.

• Writing (grades 5, 8, & 11)– Structure of Language and Writing

• Reading (grades 3-8 & 11)- Word ID/Vocabulary- Level of Reading Comprehension:

Initial Understanding and Analysis and Interpretation

- Type of text: Literary and Informational

• Science (grades 4, 8 & 11)- Physical Science- Earth Space Science- Life Science- Inquiry

NECAP test items are aligned to the Vermont Grade Expectations and are designed to measure student performance in the following ‘strands.’
