America East Championships:
This weekend the UMBC Indoor Track and Field teams head to Boston University to take part in the America East Indoor Trac
Championships. At last year’s championship the women finished sixth while the men finished fourth, and with the young teams a year
older, both teams look to improve upon those positions.
For the women, the young group of sprinters will lead the way, with many freshmen and sophomores taking their place amo
the conference elite. Leading the way will be freshman phenom Mercedes Jackson, who leads the conference in the 60 meter dash an
has the second position in the 200 meter dash. She will be aided by #3 All Time performer and fifth ranked fellow freshman Ebonique
Jones. The Retrievers will look to dominate the 200 meter dash as they possess half of the top 12 times in the Conference. In addition
Jackson, Briana Young and Kirsten Jones hold down the 6th
and 7th
ranked positions, however, Kirsten Jones might make a bigger impa
in the 400m where she has the second ranked time in the Conference, while another freshman Kalane Abbey has the fifth ranked time
In the 500 meters, freshman Paulette Fogle and sophomore Deborah Adelola should factor into the scoring as they are currently in th
fourth and fifth positions on the Conference rankings. Finally in the hurdles, school record holder Imani Colbert sits in the third positio
while junior Chowan Brightful is seventh.
For the men, TraeProctor is on the cusp of breaking the eight second barrier in the 60 meter hurdles, dropping it to 8.02 at th
New Balance Collegiate Invite. A clean run through the first round should set him up for a shot at a repeat of his conference title from
last year and an opportunity to dip into the seven second realm. After finishing second last year, Josh Hewitson is looking to make the
next step towards a conference title in the 500 meters. Currently sitting third in the Conference rankings, Hewitson looks poised to m
a run at the title with a run at his own school record.
In the distance events, the youthful impact continues with freshmen Mary Katherine Kulp and sophomore Cody Mezebish
poised to steal some points in the 1000 meter and 800 meter runs respectively. Senior Keri Wilson looks to move up the All Time UMB
lists after running two consecutive personal best times in the 3,000 meters heading into the meet.
For the men, two IC4A qualifiers lead the way. With a great second half to the season, freshman Scott Heydrick has quickly ri
up the Conference standings to the fourth position with a #3 All Time Performance last weekend at the Lafayette/Rider Winter Gamerunning 2:28.75 in the 1000 meter run. Joining him will be #2 All Time Performer Roy Jones who f inished seventh in last year’s
Championship. Sophomore Andrew Smith is the other IC4A qualifier who factored into the scoring last year in this event and could ma
a run at the school record.
The field events will be led by the strongest throws group yet at UMBC, with Amanda Deller, Chrissy Robinson, and Monica
Hagenauer holding down spots 1,2, and 5 on the conference lists. Deller has not lost a shot put competition in any America East
Championship event and with a three foot lead over teammate Robinson, who holds a three foot lead over the third performer in the
Conference; it seems all but a formality of another title. Deller also holds the third best throw in the Hammer Throw, and only sits less
than two feet off the leader. In the jumps, school record holder, Chowan Brightful is tied for the third best high jump in the conferenc
while Ebonique Jones has the fifth best long jump in the Conference.
The throwers take the spotlight once again in the field events with school record holders Cameron McDearmon and Aaron
Brooks leading the way. McDearmon’s monster throw last weekend not only gave him the school record but vaulted him to the top of
the Conference leader board. Brooks’ shot put slid him into the second slot on the Conference rankings. Both ar e also are capable of
scoring in both events, and should receive support from Chris Nash, who holds the fifth position in the Conference. Junior Aboshioma
Obemeata’s solid performance last week put him second heading into the meet and less than a foot off the lead in the triple jump. Als
watch out for Dosu Teyibo who should factor into the scoring holding the fifth best jump in the Conference. Finally, Mo Drammeh is t
for the second best jump in the Conference will need to continue to flirt with the 6’ 10” mark in order to potentially steal the Confere
title.
